View Full Version : Tasmanian Rapid and Lightning Championships 18-19 Aug

This is on this weekend. New venue at Area 52 (https://area52.com.au/), a popular local gaming, comics and bookstore. Could be quite a different atmosphere as it will be possible for customers to watch. (Hope their barracking won't be too noisy!)

Another change is that the Lightning has been uncoupled from the Open and now runs on the Rapid weekend, which allows for longer games in the Open.

And the "bishop trophy" for the Lightning (created by former TCA Treasurer/Webmaster/Ratings Officer David Christian) got full, so it's been promoted!

Past winners listed on this thread: http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?6034-Tasmanian-Chess-Titles

Thanks to Ian Little for organising and big thanks to all coming from the north-west and north of the state to support the Rapid, which is our annual fundraising tournament.

I do not have exact ages for all of the previous winners going back to the 1970s but I'm confident Will is the youngest winner by a number of years.

Congratulations go to William Rumley who claimed his first Tasmanian Lightning Champion title this evening with a thundering score of 7.5 out of 9.

Wondrous achievement! Do other states have any champion known to be younger than William Rumley?

Kevin Bonham
18-08-2018, 10:33 PM
Apparently Will is still eleven! That makes him the youngest ever winner of a TCA age-open title.

Ian Rout has won the Rapid on 5.5/7 (three draws) with Will Rumley and Denis McMahon equal second on 5. Rout, Rumley and Bonham went into the final round tied for the lead on 4.5/6 - Rout defeated Shepherd, Rumley drew with Nguyen, Bonham lost to McMahon (after declining a draw offer in a probably drawn position because a draw was meaningless in terms of the title, and then blundering.)

All my games. I usually record rapids because I think the interest of analysing them outweighs any performance disadvantage.

Congratulations to Ian and Will.
Will, the hard work is paying off. Keep it up. Remember we discussed that Bxh6 (game against Kevin) was a good idea only if you could deflect the Q away from the action! But great job!!

At an executive meeting of the TCA following the event broad support for Area 52 as a venue was given, I'd like to thank them once again for the venue, the web cam and the projector. It made the weekend much easier, and streaming live was quite a novelty.

It was also decided that Swiss Perfect would be officially retired from all Tasmanian State Titled events effective immediately in favor of Vega.

Congratulations once again to all the winners and place-getters of both events.

Thanks to everyone who took part in the Rapid & Lightning - and congratulations to Ian Rout and Will Rumley.

The TCA raised $375 after hiring fees - which should keep the website going for another year, with some left over to help pay for the new base on the 'Bishop of Doom' Lightning trophy.

There's still not much money in the bank, of course. If anyone is ever able to help us with a small donation, here's the link: https://tasmanianchessassociation.squarespace.com/donations/

Yours in Chess

Apparently Will is still eleven! That makes him the youngest ever winner of a TCA age-open title.

Has any Australian state or national age-open title been won by someone younger?

The Mercury 29 August p 3

There was a funny mishearing when I was interviewed over the phone - I was trying to keep my voice down so as to not annoy passengers on the bus and the reporter misheard "state under 12 championships" as "8 out of 12 championships".

Probably only a matter of time.
