View Full Version : 2018 Tasmanian Open June 9-11 Burnie

Kevin Bonham

I've just heard that the venue for the Tasmanian Open has changed to Stella Maris Primary School, 24-28 Futuna Avenue, Burnie. The reason for the change is to be closer to the town centre and a shop. (Burnie's usual Havenview venue is a beautiful piece of rolling hillside but a little out of the way for players.)

Remaining details as per the website https://www.tasmanianchessassociation.org/tournaments/tasmanian-open

The Open is no longer coupled with the Lightning - from this year the Lightning goes with the Rapid Champs instead. This allows for longer time control games at the Open.

I'm playing. Hopefully more consistently than in the Championships!

A reminder that entries close tomorrow (Wed 6 June). Note that

- the entry system requires you to check out, even if paying on the day, to complete the entry.

- the cut-off date has been determined by the TCA, and neither the director (me) or the host club (Burnie) have authority to accept late entries without TCA approval.

Further information

https://www.tasmanianchessassociation.org/tournaments/tasmanian-open

I will post a draft (that is, for information purposes only and not guaranteed) draw for Round 1 after entries close. Can some eminent TCA official toss a coin or other object and advise the colour for the top seed (to avoid any conflict of interest in me doing it myself).

Thanks Ian

I'll toss the coin after entries have closed and advise you via this space on Thursday morning...

Reg Harvey has advised that we have 3 late entries from the Burnie club:

Taso Bookarof (junior, year 7)

Rhian Shee (junior, year 6)

Leon Cox (senior)

Assuming everyone turns up, we have 17 starters.

The coin has been tossed & the top seed (Ian Rout) has the black bits in R.1

See you there - Denis

The field in rating order is

Rout, Ian 1964
Bonham, Kevin 1940
McMahon, Denis 1743
Harvey, Reg 1688
Lewis, Nigel 1642
Little, Ian 1631
Cox, Aidan 1518
Bookarof, Taso 1293 R
Beeton, Kerry 1291
Rumley, William 1157
Rice, Leon 1141
Shee, Rhian 1083 R
Swan, Owen 1073
Campbell, Andrew 800 X
Beeton, Luwanna 299
Campbell, Mitchell 250 X
Patrick, John 200 X
Five players do not have ratings on the latest normal list. Those marked R are seeded at their Rapid rating, and those with X are estimates to give appropriate relativities in that area of the list as indicated by the 2018 Tasmanian Championship.

The provisional first round draw is below. This is for information only and is subject to late entries, withdrawals, half-point byes or other extraordinary events.

On the subject of half-point byes, the rules permit two in the first four rounds, which must be notified before the commencement of the previous round. This means that byes for Round 2 must be requested prior to the start of Round 1.

Pairings for the tournament will be made with Vega version 8, with backup options of Swiss Perfect or manual pairings if anything goes wrong (which is unlikely).

1 . Beeton, Kerry - Rout, Ian
2 . Bonham, Kevin - Rumley, William
3 . Rice, Leon - McMahon, Denis
4 . Harvey, Reg - Shee, Rhian
5 . Swan, Owen - Lewis, Nigel
6 . Little, Ian - Campbell, Andrew
7 . Beeton, Luwanna - Cox, Aidan
8 . Bookarof, Taso - Campbell, Mitchell
9 . Patrick, John - ( bye )

If the Tassie tournament was timed to co-incide with the Southern Lights it may attract more players - there will be more to see.

While Kevin beating Will would be a huge upset, I just don't think it's likely to happen.

Rout and Bonham 4.5/5 going into the final round tomorrow. One R5 game in progress which will determine who else is on the top two boards.

In Lewis-Cox there was a complex win for white with 29.Rxe6! (which just seems like the intuitive move to me given black's looming threats anyway) - it can't be retaken as Qxe6+ then g3 kills the queen, so 29...g4 30.Re7 Rf5 31.Bxg4 then white will get the rook and knight for the rook and come out two pawns up which soon becomes three.

Will Rumley was involved in two fascinating draws in a row. Firstly vs Kerry Beeton there was a final position where Will (if he had the move) would mate Kerry with his rook, knight and pawn, but Kerry had a pawn on the seventh and had a kind of rambling rook where taking the rook meant Kerry got another rook check, then queened with check and won, while running away into the centre of the board wasn't possible for Will either - or if it was possible it at least wasn't mating or winning. Secondly vs John Patrick who is showing great improvement; Will had what I thought was a crushing position early on but John managed to get out of it with a piece for three pawns. Watching it I thought there might have been wins for one side or perhaps even both in the endgame but I haven't looked closely.

Ian Little's doing a great job on the PGN and it looks like we'll eventually get nearly every game.

Great effort Ian!

Beeton - Rumley - rambling rook with a difference!

And as I thought both sides did miss wins in Rumley - Patrick.
