Some Aussies are there, as well as IM Irene Kharisma Sukandar and GM Timur Gareyev, who attended Doeberl Cup. Good luck to all the players there!

Anton currently one of the leaders on 4.5/5

Albert Winkelman perfoming well above rating so far. Emma Guo has drawn with a GM but also with a WCM.

150+ rating points in less than 2 months, Anton's former coach is doing wonders.

Just watched online Anton absolutely slaughter Jan Gustafson, who played the opening like a patzer.

Jan's straight on the chess24 chat with 'hmm not my best game'. Not kidding!

Here it is:

1.Nf3 d5 2.d4 Nf6 3.c4 c6 4.Nc3 dxc4 5.a4 Bf5 6.Ne5 e6 7.f3 Bb4 8.Kf2 Bc2 9.Qd2 Bb3 10.e4 b5 11.axb5 cxb5 12.Qg5 Bxc3 13.bxc3 0-0 14.h4 Nxe4+ 15.fxe4 f6 16.Qg4 fxe5+ 17.Kg3 exd4 18.Qxe6+ Kh8 19.cxd4 Qxd4 20.Ba3 Qxa1 21.Bxf8 Nd7 22.Bd6 Nf6 23.e5 Qe1+ 24.Kh2 Bd1 0-1

8. Kf2 is a minor line but has been seen in a number of GM games including Zhao playing it against Anton in 2013. Chessbase database has one previous game with Anton's 8...Bc2 and that is De Roode (2248) - Fluechter (2092) 2014, won by black. (De Roode played 10.e3).

Then whatever might be said of Gustaffson's opening choice, the move 14.h4 was just a blunder.

Yes, apparently it is very common for GMs to mix up the lines here and rather than 8. Nc4 0-0 9. Kf2... to play 8. Kf2 straight away. Yuan did this in 2013 and was unpunished. This time around Anton knew that he would be better after 8... Bc2.

It looks like Jan did not spend enough time preparing for Anton. He claimed on chess 24 that Anton has never previously played the variation with 4... dc. This variation used to be the main variation for Anton for many years and there are many games available.

After 12... 0-0, white is technically lost. Anton let the opponent off of the hook with 12...Bc3 and received the favour back after 14. h4...

Assuming all of those playing 8.Kf2 were mixing up lines then the ratio of games with the mixed up line to games with the correct line is amazingly high - about 1 to 2 in Chessbase, though it might be more like 1 to 3 if everyone played 8...0-0 in response to 8.Nc4. Very funny that this happens.

A bit of humour from David https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10155647962693667&set=p.10155647962693667&type=3&theater

Timur Gareev also had a tough run. After this round one can also add Hrant Melkumyan. What a dangerous tournament to play for 2600+...

Young Indonesian FM Novendra Priasmoro (born 1999, with a very high FIDE rating for an FM at 2449) having a great tournament, now outright leader and white against Anton in round 8.

Even better for Priasmoro now as he won against Anton and takes a one-point lead into the final round. Six players on 6.5.

After a draw with Nigel Short, I believe he is now winning the tournament. Well done Priasmoro!

Wow! This is a big upset, and worthy of more words than the Gustafson mix-up in the opening against Anton which has triggered too many words!
