Here are the results of round 1, which already featured some close pairings and games - on board 4, Kathleen drew with Nick Ilic, while on board 9 Eduardo eventually ground down newcomer Peter Clark from a blocked position.

Late entries with a half point bye in round 1 are welcome and encouraged, you still have another week to decide - we will need to receive bye requests and entries by 10 pm on Tuesday 1st of May in order to publish the round 2 pairings on the Wednesday before the round.

Here is the finish of Eugene's game with Milic; Eugene has summarised and improved on the complicated post-game analysis from this afternoon.

28. e5 {I hadn't fully worked out the consequences of this, but I needed
to complicate the game, otherwise I have no activity.} fxe5 (28... dxe5 29. a5
{Chris suggested this idea, and it appears to be best, with a very complicated
game.} (29. Rd7 e4 30. h4) 29... Qa6 30. h4 Rxd5 31. Bxd5+ Nf7 32. Qe3) 29.
fxg6 hxg6 30. Qh4 (30. Qe3 Nf7 31. Rxc5 Qxc5 32. Qxc5 dxc5 33. Rc3 Kg7 34. Bd5
Nd6 35. Rxc5 Kf6 {I guess White has some vague chances here, but ojectively it
is 0.00.}) 30... Nf7 (30... e4 {Initially, I thought that this move saved
Black, and White should take a perpetual. Then the analysis convinced me that
White was winning. The engine finds a defence though:} 31. Qxg5 exd3 32. Qxg6+
Kh8 (32... Kf8 33. Rxd3 e5 34. Rf3+ Ke7 35. Rf7+ Ke8 36. Qg8# {wins trivially.}
) 33. Qh6+ Kg8 34. Be4 {this was suggested by Chris. In the analysis we
concluded that this was winning for White, but in fact Black holds on
miraculously:} (34. Rxd3 {This is the calm engine move, which claims to give
White an advantage.} Rf8 35. Qe6+ Kh8 36. Qxe7 Qd8 37. Qe6 Qf6 38. Qxf6+ Rxf6
39. Kg3) 34... Kf7 {Incredibly, it appears White has nothing better than a
perpetual here:} 35. Rxd3 (35. Bg6+ Ke6 {is the key point, and the king
escapes!}) 35... Ke8) (30... Rc1 {This move which was not considered at all in
the analysis forces a perpetual.} 31. Qxg5 Qg1+ 32. Kg3 Qe1+) 31. Qxe7 (31.
Rxc5 Qxc5 32. Qxe7 {This is an improved version of the game, since Black loses
the option of capturing on d5.}) 31... Rc7 (31... Rxd5 32. Bxd5 {this leads to
a forced draw by perpetual:} Qf2+ 33. Kh1 Qf1+ 34. Kh2 Qxd3 35. Qxf7+ Kh8 36.
Qf6+ Kh7 37. Qh4+ Kg7 38. Qe7+) 32. Qf6 Kh7 33. Rb5 {Black resigns.} Qa6 34.
Be4 Rg8 35. Rb8 {is crushing.} 1-0

There was an unexpected result on board 3 - well done to Jackie for managing a draw! I'll post that one soon to keep the game of the week going (thanks for your encouragement Garrett!). Board 1 was the last to finish, with John finally prevailing in an opposite coloured bishop ending with queens.

Next week should feature the encounter John vs Eugene, as they are the only players left on a perfect score of 4/4.

Black's queen had just returned from a sortie to capture White's rook on a1. Although
he is a pawn up, his situation on the kingside is dire.
26. Bxg6 This allows Black to extinguish White's attack. (26. Rf6 wins
without much trouble, for example 26...Be8 27. Bxg6 The most accurate
refutation of 27...Be7 is especially neat: 28. Qe2 Bxf6 29. Qxe6+ Kf8 30. Bxf6

Bxf8 28. Qf2 Qg7 . To maintain equality White must play 29. Qf6 , and he
offered a draw with this move, which Black accepted. Although White's h-pawn
could be dangerous, Black is doing enough after 29...e5 (perhaps followed ...Qxf6
and ...Bg7) not to fall into serious trouble.

Here is an excerpt from the important game G.Ilic - Schön, which helped to decide the final prizes.

Eugene is somewhat hampered in his winning attempts by the vulnerability of
his king, but calculates precisely that he can get away with 33... Bc4
, as the queen and bishop can cooperate to checkmate White's king if he seeks
counterplay with 34. Ra7+ (34. Rc1 was played in the game, and led
ultimately after the strong reply 34... Bd5 to a defeat for Goran. Perhaps a good
example of opposite coloured bishops favouring the attacker, though the point
is more that White's bishop is being stifled by the e5 pawn.) 34... Kg6 35.
Qe8+ (35. Rxg7+ Kxg7 36. Qb7+ leads nowhere, owing to 36... Kh6 and similar
mating patterns for Black, should White's queen go over to deliver more checks.
) 35... Kh6 36. Qf8 and now Black retaliates with 36... Qd2+ 37. Kb1 (Or 37. Ka3
Qa2+ 38. Kb4 Qb3+ 39. Ka5 Qb5#) 37... Bd3+ 38. Ka1 Qc1+ 39. Ka2 Bc4# 0-1
