Albert Chin has a Quick rating of 1107 and Owen Swan 1051. The other four unrated entries do not have Quick ratings.A couple of the others have part-qualified for ratings and hence have played a bit, so pursuant to the observations here (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?17071-Seeding-unrated-players-for-Swiss-tournaments) it should be feasible to also give them a more accurate estimate than zero.

For anyone puzzling over the possible draw and the unrated players I've just discussed it with Ian and provisionally:

* Andrew Campbell will be given a seeding rating of 1201 based on performance in the Launceston Cup 2017
* The remaining unrated players will be left without rating for pairings purposes (they have not scored any points against ACF rated players in ACF rated games. Including Tornelo ratings would create distortion because of Luwanna's ACF rating.)

Also Will Rumley is absent and will not be paired for round 1.

After withdrawing Alastair Dyer due to illness, adding Toby Straton after he contacted me with an error in entering, taking into account Will Rumley's first round absence, and adding all possible seeding ratings, the revised final field is:

Revised round 1 pairing - there's an issue with the pay-on-day option that meant some entries were not registered. The more the better!

Congrats to Ian Rout and Toby Straton who both survived the loss of a game to tie for first in this year's state title. It's Ian's third title and Toby's first (at his first attempt). That will improve his inaccurate rating!

Given the magnitude of the blunder with which I wasted half a point at the end of this final round game it's just as well there was nothing riding on it for me (apart from a few ratings points and Aidan can have those as he's underrated anyway.

(Black can in fact keep one pawn on the board and I was too tired to even realise that, but it is a pretty easy draw from there for white anyway).

Not a great fan of this Nxd5 line for black. I would prefer to hold the centre and go into an exchange variation. My two cents worth: In place of 7. Rb1 I think white should concentrate on reinforcing d4 with 7. Nf3. But 7...b6 seems a little slow, creates a weakness (which is accentuated if the Bc8 is exchanged) and blocks the d8 to a5 diagonal. The focus should be on rapid development and pressure on the White centre with something like 7...Be7 maybe? Also was the more natural move 11... Qxd7 not possible? The N ends up on a square where it is not putting pressure on the centre and is working against the white pawns.

What was the point of White exchanging the light-squared Bs? That B is often a useful attacking piece, while Black's isn't doing too much at the moment. This applies even more strongly if White wants to play e5.

Yep. e5 makes much more sense with the white square B present hitting h7.

Not a great fan of this Nxd5 line for black. I would prefer to hold the centre and go into an exchange variation.

I think it's pretty dodgy too actually. I have a concern that if white plays accurately it can be very difficult for black to deal with white's centre pawn. But I just wasn't in the mood for defending the Exchange QGD at the time. Actually I find the Exchange QGD rather annoying to play against; I find it quite difficult to (a) stop white from being better and (b) create serious winning chances against it.

Yes I agree with all of that. 7.Nf3 is overwhelmingly the main line. 7.a3 is I think the most common sideline.

Yes I agree with all of that. 7.Nf3 is overwhelmingly the main line. 7.a3 is I think the most common sideline.7.Nf3 is obviously adequate when Black has transposed to the Semi-Tarrasch having avoided both the Tarrasch and the Exchange variations. Play generally continues 7...cd 8.cd Bb4+ swapping a pair of Bishops. 7.Rb1 or a3 are attempts to show a down side to Black's move order by covering b4. Schandorff recommends 7.a3 in Playing the Queen's Gambit (1st ed - I believe there's a later one which I haven't seen). I think Anand played a game with 7.a3 recently.

Most of my games either featured generous donations in the early stages or were a little, well, flawed, so instead of a best game here is the most interesting (possibly of the whole tournament, though I haven't seen others in detail) - not so much in the early exchanges but in the latter two-thirds where Black sacrifices a piece for a 40-move attempt at perpetual. I've excluded notes as they wouldn't add much, except for a better option at move 44 (it also works, with greater complexity, on the next move). I saw this but didn't want to take any risks; as Gelfand points out, you only need one winning move.

In the Cox-Bonham game I chose 7. Rb1 for a couple of reasons. I thought that Kevin (knowing I'm a QGD exchange player) might have something cooked up in the ... Nxd5 line so I wanted to avoid the Nf3 mainline. I have also played 7. a3 against Kevin in a blitz game and got a horrible position quite quickly so I wasn't keen for a repeat. I noticed that it seems to be getting more popular in recent times and a check of the ChessTempo database seems to support this, with 42 7. Rb1 games compared to just 8 7. a3 games in 2017-18. Ian correctly said that both a3 and Rb1 are aiming at avoiding the DSB exchange and I had a vague idea that Kevins bishop might block up his development a little.

What was the point of White exchanging the light-squared Bs? That B is often a useful attacking piece, while Black's isn't doing too much at the moment. This applies even more strongly if White wants to play e5.

I wanted to play 10. Qg4 but was afraid of 10. Qg4 e5 11. Qxg7 Bf6 12. Qg3 exd4 and I didn't like the complications. 10. Bb5+ either blocks his bishops' diagonal or removes the bishop entirely, leaving me free to play Qg4.

I wasn't overly pleased with this game. While I did hold Kevin to a draw I squandered what I thought was a good position, especially after the queen trade. I also blundered terribly with 39. f4+ and if I hadn't spotted 34. Bxf6 earlier in the game I would have almost certainly lost. Not much to say about the endgame except that mutual tiredness was certainly a factor in our play :)

Well, Mamedyarov just copied your idea at the highest level with success! Who knew that some of the top players in the world follow this site? But he improved on your line by refraining from swapping light-squared bishops.

It's interesting because Kramnik has outplayed GMs from the white side of similar positions, but allowed himself to be caught on the black side. He has gone downhill in this tournament after his great start.

Ian (Little) is working on the pgn. In the meantime, here's a link to the 40 or so games successfully entered so far. Most of the remaining are those involving 2 juniors - where trying to decipher the sheet is now #2 on my list of silly things to do - or those where no names were entered. The link, together with Kevin's ACF newsletter article on the event, is now also on the TCA website.
