The Dandenong March Rapid started with rounds 1-3 (out of nine), and will continue with rounds 4-6 next Wednesday (14 March). The first two rounds saw a good number of upsets, with juniors achieving victories or draws against much higher rated opponents. In Rd 1, Jackie Li beat Izmet Gungordu, and Nahuel Abubakar defeated Manny Chua. In Rd 2, Nahuel Abubakar won against Miodrag Milojevic (the greatest upset so far), and Jackie Li, Archit Kannan as well as Alan Prince managed draws against there more experienced opponents. There were no upsets at all in Rd 3, perhaps Rds 1 and 2 had served as a wake-up call.

Before the AGM on Monday, 26 March, one can say that the club has recovered from the painful low of mid 2017 when only nine (9) players turned up at the start of a tournament. A total of 23 players participated in the March Rapid which consolidates the recovery shown in the last few tournaments, although several players took byes in the last rounds, either for personal reasons, or being busy running the club, or because they realized they liked slow chess better.
