Don't know what else is going on but Frank has just mentioned in the shoutbox that Heather Richards has beaten Kosteniuk! Anyone got the game?

Ok, it was a bit of a swindle :)...
However, great fighting skills and great endgame technique to convert!

Even in a completely lost position, Kostenyuk was still trying to bring a whole point home. If she regularly played in Australia, her rating would be at least 100 points smaller.

The box thinks white can be better after 23.Ba2. I am not sure how many humans can bring themselves to play such a move.

And Rd2. Alana won against a 2200 rated FM!

Someone might want to edit it to put PGN tags as I am on my phone. Just lost round 3 in an hour. 2/4 in the Challengers - Heather is on 2.5. Gibraltar is amazing!

In Alana's game black was pretty much losing after 17...Rac8 instead of doing something about the weakness on e6. But possibly white was better anyway; it's an open Sicilian so I wouldn't know. Another way to exploit the same weakness is 18.Nxd5 because once black takes with the e-pawn, Nf5 is decisive.

Hilarious game. White not unreasonably attempts to smash black's weird-looking position but overcooks it, misses the last accurate way to avoid collapsing (21.Nc7, or maybe 21.Rf3 saccing a piece is OK too) and is suddenly five pawns down. Qh2+ and Qh4+ is just rubbing it in. Resigning after Qh4+ would have been in order but white was probably too annoyed!

Heather can play very well sometimes while often not playing so well in the opening/creating weaknesses. Its always very difficult to play against such opponents. You get a good position easy...then suddenly the tables turn. In any case, her results are showing her great potential. Furthermore, I think she may be getting close to a WGM norm

Or a IM norm - she has beaten a GM and an IM so far already!

I believe five points would confer an IM norm and Heather Richards is on four points and playing black against John Paul Wallace in the final round.

Thanks for the magnificent illustrated coverage on Face Book Lani.

Nice to see you and Heather amongst the creme de la creme of international chess!

Also amazing is the number of 100s of appreciative responses to your postings!

I am sure this year's Gibraltar must have been one of (if not the) highlights of your career!

Best!

I get that it would have been a WGM norm - she had had a half-point bye so would have been 4.5/9 over the board. (As it happened John-Paul won.)
