Nice finish! Seems Rozentalis missed a chance to survive with 30...Kg7 and for this reason 29.Ne4 would have been better. The rest was excellent by Anton. I must show this to our local 1...Nf6 fanatic.

haha show him! Am I correct to claim that this opening is rarely met in top class chess nowadays, but it still has some devoted fans internationally?

BtW IM Smirnov's opponent in tonight's encounter is GM Levin, E. A.. (3rd seed) 2532. Anton will conduct the black pieces.

Thanks again! Good to see that the Greeks have joined the Cubans in memorializing him. By coincidence, the only time I played in Greece was the 1988 Olympiad in Thessaloniki, and the tournament bulletin had a detailed article series for Capa's centenary.

Yes, actually, it's a double GM Norm tournament since it's running concurrently
but independently to the Fischer Memorial organised by the same Club (Anogeia CC) Anogeia (Gr Ανώγεια from 'Ανω Γη = Highlands)

There are quite a few funny stories surrounding this unique "twin" tournament, but some other time! :)

yes Andrew, it looks like his remaining encounters will not be as hard.
Having said that, chess is an unpredictable game and one should always be very careful with predicting outcomes.
Anton is playing White against FM Taylor, A. C. 2247 in tonight's encounter.
FM Taylor has managed only 1/4 so far.

Playing white against the Milonakis, the bottom player, Anton Smirnov blundered on move 36 to put his opponent in an apparently winning position. But then inexplicably Milonakis accepted a draw by repetition with Stockfish showing him plus 3. Oh well. Take them when you can. 1.5 points for the GM norm.

1.5 points for the GM norm.

Just wanted to point out that Anton's Round 9 opponent, Antoine Favarel 2357, is also having a good tournament. I get that Favarel needs 0.5/2 for an IM norm. In Round 8 Favarel is White against GM Levin 2532. If Favarel loses tonight and Smirnov wins with black against Xylogiannopolous 2279, then a draw in Round 9 will give both players the norms.

George Morgan

Another draw today means that Anton needs a win tomorrow. Opponent Favarel already has the IM norm after also drawing today.
