Vladimir Pavlovich Malaniuk (Влади́мир Па́влович Маланю́к, 21 July 1957 – 2 July 2017), three times Ukrainian champion, died a few weeks before his 60th birthday. A very strong player, but presumably because of Soviet restrictions on travel, he didn't obtain the GM title until relatively late in life (1987).

He was famous as a Leningrad Dutch specialist, e.g. outplaying Polugayevsky in an OCB endgame with Rs on (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1112474), although he came unstuck against a Karpov exchange sac (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1068678).

Interestingly, he was asked why as a Dutch specialist he never played the Bird Opening, and he replied, "The extra tempo's gonna kill me." As a Master he played in USSR and scored 50% to finished on the same score with the likes of Petrosian. Extremely talented guy!
