Not to take away from the great work being done by Aidan Cox, Martin Friebe, and Karl Manzer to name a few, but the Launceston Chess Club is being revived and ChessChat is a key element in spreading the word.

The Launceston Chess Club will have a dedicated nest of pages on the TCA website, like all other clubs, with the address being http://www.tasmanianchessassociation.org/launceston-chess-club/. Information is likely to appear there soon as details are worked out. Their Facebook group is at the following address https://www.facebook.com/groups/LauncestonChessClub/

As I understand it the new LCC will meet on Fridays at 6pm starting as of the 24th of June (next week), venue to be confirmed in due course.

Well done to everyone for their part in the LCC revival, it will be a great boon to the Tasmanian chess scene to have a 4th club once again. I personally am looking forward to the prospect of playing in future LCC weekenders.

Congratulations, and watch/use this space for more developments.

Yes, good to hear :D About ten years ago we had a good little group in Launceston when Leo Minol (and able lieutenants like Dallas Fry) used to run things.

Welcome to our first official chess club meeting!

We got a nicely mixed group of people. Ranging from teens to adults, from beginner level up to the Tasmanian Chess Champion!
We all share the same goal: We want to enjoy some good chess games with a nice group of people.

Feel free to come along and spread the word, if you have friends who enjoy playing chess bring them along as well!

Hi guys,

This is Karl. I'm very excited for the opening night of the new chess club. Hopefully some of the other TCA members can make it up for match.

I refer the Launceston Chess Club to Section 4 of the TCA Constitution and, pursuant to it, hope that Launceston will be in touch with Ian Little with a request to formally affiliate with the TCA. We will be having a quick meeting of the TCA following the Tas. Rapid in Devonport, and could consider it then. The 4 main benefits of becoming affiliate are:
- club-based membership is $5 less than individual membership
- clubs get a voting spot on executive via their nominated delegate
- clubs get all games rated by the ACF, with the TCA bearing the cost
- clubs get all events advertised through the TCA website and social media networks.

(1) Any chess club in Tasmania may apply for affiliation with the TCA. The application should be addressed in writing to the Secretary. Affiliation shall date from the meeting at which affiliation is approved.

(2) Affiliated clubs shall be entitled to appoint a delegate to the Executive and may change their delegate at any time by written notice to the Secretary.

Yours in Chess. Denis

Hi everyone,

I have a home chess project that I'm trying to complete and I need your help!

I'm after wooden chess sets of various shapes sizes and sorts and old notation sheets.

The sets will not be played with and do not have to be complete, they must be wooden, and preferably not the standard Staunton style, though I'll consider those too.
The notation sheets must be hand written, but not necessarily legible! They can be of any style, from any tournament.

I'm willing to pay postage on the notation sheets, and willing to negotiate price on the sets. Donations to the cause are also greatly appreciated.

e-mail phyrexianrook@gmail.com with photos or descriptions if you have anything that fits these descriptions.

Due to Covid-19, if TCA players would like to play tournaments against other TCA players as a replacement for normal club nights, I've set up a club on chess.com in which we can organise closed tournaments. I'm proposing to run a tournament at 7.30pm on the usual nights for the Hobart and Launceston clubs, so Monday and Wednesday nights, cycling through a few different time controls. I would suggest that discussion on how the online club works and runs gets shifted to the club chat on chess.com so that Chess Chat isn't flooded with discussion that's not of interest to everyone.

Steps needed:

1. Join the Tasmania Chess Association club on chess.com. The link to the club site is: https://www.chess.com/club/tasmania-chess-association
2. Join our first tournament tonight, scheduled for 7.30pm here: https://www.chess.com/live#t=1188483. Importantly, we need 4 players online and in the tournament BEFORE the start time or else it is cancelled, and you can't join hours in advance like daily tournaments. Late starters can join afterwards, but if we don't have four it will be automatically cancelled. Tournaments are Swiss, so you need to make sure you click the link for "Upcoming Swiss Tournaments".
3. Participate in the chat on the online club site in what you might want from this temporary replacement for OTB chess amongst our community.

Currently I don't know how to advertise the tournaments, so I will probably look to name them more appropriately and members should see them come up as the time appears (in the list of upcoming Swiss tournaments). Tournament times will be posted on the main page of the chess.com club page. Let's see how we go!
