However only a maximum of 2 games per day is allowed in title tournaments. i.e. Events where title norms are possible.

Oh, thanks Bill. That explains my confusion.

No kidding! 3 FIDE games in a day is harsh, I'm not sure why so many Aussie tournaments feel they need to have 6-7 round tournaments (also since Gold Coast has like 3 sections!) Go overseas and the norm is 5 rounds for a weekender. They generally have 3 sections to make the tournaments have lower numbers so the top players play as a result.

Hi Tony and Vaness,

Had never heard that 5 round tournaments were the norm overseas. It's certainly not going to change for this year but something we could consider for future events.

Might be a problem of a couple of players on 5/5 then.

If that is not a problem then cool.

It is the norm in Britian at least, think a lot in Europe too.

Just want to check before we enter, is it ok to take a half a point bye on the Saturday? I don't see information about byes written.

Cheers.

That's why having lots of sections helps to reduce numbers in tournaments as most top seeds tend to meet round 4. Probably need at least 3 sections.

I was more wondering why the organisers would want to schedule three rounds with a classical time limit in one day? (What is the reasoning ?) Perhaps you could poll players this year?

Also, like Vaness, I'd like to know if half-point byes are permissible. This is not mentioned on the entry form whereas most QCA (and TCA) events I've competed in have offered this option but not in the last one (or two) rounds.

And, while I'm at it, I'd be grateful if the organisers would commit to making an effort to controlling noise in the playing room. This was an issue in the 2014 event (although I've been told it was better last year).

Thanks for your assistance.

I am of the understanding that byes can be taken as long as they are requested at least 1 round prior to the bye being taken (with the exception of the final 2 rounds).

Noise will be dealt with to the best of the ability of the arbiters in an attempt to keep noise to an absolute minimum.

Last year's event was ran perfectly, and I'm not saying that because I won the u1600! The analysis room was in a completely seperate building so the kids would float over there, the venue has changed but even last year there were at least 4 arbiters/volunteers constantly walking around ensuring the event ran smoothly, I travelled from Canberra for the event and didn't regret it!

Hi Tony,

There are 6 round in this tournament with the aim to avoid there being a number of players tied at the top come the end of the event. Of course this may still happen, but having the 6th round helps spread the field a bit more. The event has also run quite successfully with this schedule a few years back and only venue circumstances dictated the change last year.

Byes - 2 half point byes are permissible for this event, the exception being in the final 2 rounds where a 0 point bye may be taken. Byes must be requested prior to the start of the previous round (e.g. a bye for round 4 must be asked for and approved before round 3 begins). - (Mods can you please add that in my original post by any chance?)

Regarding noise, I can't comment on the 2014 event as I was overseas at the time, however we are certainly planning on doing what we can to limit noise - the venue this year will be seperated into 2 rooms to assist with this.

Also we have now been notified that anyone who wishes to stay at the Hinterland Hotel (adjoining the venue) can access 10% off their costs. To do so please call the Hinterland Hotel on (07) 5557 1699 and make sure to mention that you are playing in the Gold Coast Open Chess Tournament.

Are unrated player's eligible for prizes in the <1000 section?

As per what Graeme has done previously, we will endeavour to establish a players playing strength prior to the tournament - and then use that strength to determine a deemed rating. That will thus determine eligibility for prizes.

Byes are definitely available for all three events - The entry form states Byes: A maximum of 2 half point byes are available for players should the need arise ( except for the final 2 rounds when no half point byes may be taken ) These MUST be asked for prior to the previous round starting.

See you all there! Full entry details are on the Gardiner Chess Website : www.gardinerchess.com.au AND on the CAQ Website : www.caq.org.au - Look under Coming Events.

Now that we are getting closer to the event I've noticed there is no rating floor to the Open event so that even players under 1000(!) are entering. This means that Round 1 will be close to meaningless in terms of sporting interest, so no wonder there is a well established tradition (and sound argument) for six rounds. If there was a sensible floor though (along the lines of the Doeberl Cup Premier event but maybe not set as high), five rounds might suddenly make a lot more sense.

By the way (pun intended), when I entered I was able to clearly indicate when I wanted byes.

Certainly food for thought regarding next year Tony.

I will say though that the player mentioned has drawn with a solid 1600 (and improving) player recently and that within the previous year we've seen a 900 rated player draw with an IM at one of our events also....Thus it would be folly to entirely write off the first round (though of course we should expect the seeds to win).

It's always tempting to cherry-pick data and find the 1-in-1000 (or 1 in 100,000) kind of performance Andrew but the reason players are a given rating, such as 1000, is because that is their average performance over time. True, young players are usually improving (especially when super-charged by expert coaching) but in my view it is a better outcome for all concerned if up-and-coming players prove themselves first.

Hey Tony the example he is giving is related to myself last year when i played one of my first classical tournaments in many years (Nel Van de graff classic) rated 900 and had a performance rating well above that. Granted it is rare for lower rated players to consistently perform above that however the idea of a open is for that division to be open to any players who wish to compete. There are many players who may be under rated for many reasons however they can gain quite a lot from such a tournament or do as seeding wouldsuggest and struggle.

Regardless it seems to be a strong field overall in my opinion and I look forward to seeing you there this weekend, all the best :)

Hi to all,

From what I understand, there has never been a rating requirement to enter the Open division of the Gold Coast Open, just maximum ratings to enter the U1600 and U1000. It is quite common for a number of players rated below 1600 to compete in the Open, although of course it is unusual for such players to be rated below 800. Ultimately the choice of where lower-rated junior play is determined by coaches and parents. Despite the odds being stacked rather considerably against the lowest seeds in the Open, I can think of several appealing features for them: a chance to play against some very strong players; and possibly more importantly, a longer time control and FIDE rated games. I can think of a number of junior players who crave extra time to think, and who have had enough of the rapid time controls so regularly imposed upon them at inter-school and other junior events. 60 + 10 is obviously already a big step up from 15 minute chess, but to those who have discovered Doeberl (generally the Minor), it still feels too quick. (For the benefit of interstate readers, Queensland has very few adult rapid tournaments, of which even less are rated.)

I find it interesting that much of the discussion here has centered on whether a round could potentially be cut - my preference would be to add a day or two and have it run along a Doeberl schedule (of course, much easier said than done - a lack of public holidays in the June school holidays is one very obvious problem).

I am looking forward to seeing everyone on Friday or Saturday.

Cheers,

Michael.

Still, I think Dr Dowden has a point. Even the hoped for 1/1000 chance is admitting something of a lottery element in having vastly mismatched players, while the 999/1000 prove the point that it's a wasted round. Since the GCO has gone to the trouble to have two lower-rated divisions, it would make sense that a player should not be eligible for two divisions above his rating.

Anyway, as always, best wishes for a successful tournament.

I absolutely agree. The GCO is FIDE-rated and should look and feel like the premier Queensland event in the annual calendar. Conditions are important and influence people's decisions to compete.

I'll have a survey sheet ready for participants over the weekend so we can create the best tournament we can going forwards and indeed find out if people would be prepared to take a day off work to extend the main event!

As Michael has pointed out, the lack of a long weekend is rather irritating and i know the other ones are taken already!

I think regardless of the rating by definition open means open therefore what is the issue. If the participant/s wanted to play in other events they could have chosen to do so. The option was for open and they took it. Shaun's upset is just one example but there are plenty of others you could use where round 1 has major upsets. Two of the Labor Day tournaments from interstate had rd 1 upsets and they were open events.

Chess is about growing and learning as a player you can not do that if there are restrictions on your chess. Hence why any rating cutoff is wrong.

As for Michael's point I also think 7+ rounds is ideal but it is difficult. I believe the MCC sometimes do two night rounds (Thursday/Friday) to get it in.

Add Donato Mallari (ACF 2051) to the list.

I've been informed that the Hinterland Hotel has now been booked out. Best bet for those seeking accommodation would be the Town and Country Motel which is about 2km away, also in Nerang.

A great tournament. Congratulations to the organisers. I gained a few wins and losses. Unfortunately I could have had a win instead of a draw in one game if I had known how to do King bishop knight against lone King. Will have to look that one up

No need to go too far. We had a thread on this (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?6554-Bishop-and-knight-checkmate&p=392451&viewfull=1#post392451); I recommend the Deletang triangles method which other people have liked.

Many of the younger players had trouble with some of the more common endings eg k and q against k, k and r against k, k against k and p to draw, k and two pawns against k to win. Perhaps coaches could make sure their students know these four basic endings.

Wow, what a fantastic week-end of chess we have just had at The BIG Gold Coast Open, U1600 and U1000 at Nerang, with a record total of 146 players in all 3 events! It was fitting to see GM Zong-Yuan Zhao to take the BIG Open Title on countback on his 30th birthday from IM Moulthun Ly and IM Brodie McClymont, all on 5 out of 6. Congrats to the outright winners of The U1600 and U1000 as well, Dusan Smeck (6/7) and John Paliwoda (6.5/7).

Andrew FitzPatrick anf Justine Jule did another superb job organizing this incredible chess week-end and the arbiting was professionally done by both Michael D'Arcy and Shaun Curtis. It was great to see Phil Drew transmit the top games live on the ACF Website too! You can still see the R6 games now on the ACF Website- do yourself a favour and play over Zong-Yuan Zhao's last round victory!

Congratulations to Yuan and all the other prizewinners. Sounds like it was a great weekend! (I spent it trying to get over a cold!)
