Great performance so far by MCC Allegro player Niruruthi who is currently on 2.5/3 in this tournament. Her Top board match with Dean Hogg next round will be the game to watch! Go Niruruthi!

A great number of players, many new, turned up for round 1 on Tuesday! The results for round 1 were:

Rory and Mohammad were playing on the board next to me, with a blocked position for most of the game (Q/N/Ps vs Q/B/Ps. Rory kept pushing, but in the end Mohammad got his Q around behind the pawns and so the best that could happen were perpetual checks.

There are now 26 players for round 2 (below):

We have introduced a new club web site for 2016 (and beyond!). We still have to inform Chess Victoria and ACF newsletter, etc. The address is http://hobsonsbaychess.com/ if you are interested. Feedback welcome! The link is also in my signature.

Below are the round 5 results and final standings for the Purdy Cup.

Well done to Tony Davis for taking out the event with a perfect score, and in doing so, has qualified directly for the club championship. I have also updated the Progress scores (https://hobsonsbaychess.com/event-calendar/progress-scores/) (the top 8 players qualify for the club championship). My apologises for missing the last 2 rounds of this event, but family matters trumped chess (who would have thought!), so I did not get to post the round 4 results. Also, well done to Rory Wootten for coming equal second - his ACF rating should zoom up a few notches.

Next week will be the first of our Allegro tournaments (5 games of 10 minutes + 10 seconds a move), using the Najdorf Sicilian as our starting position. I did not choose this opening, but I have to admit that I have a long-forgotten pre-algebraic notation book on this opening - all hail to Bobby Fischer! So if you are curious about the club, next Tuesday will be a good time to come along and check us out. This links to the club web site (https://hobsonsbaychess.com/) if you need more details about us.

The Committee took the decision today to indefinitely suspend the Hobsons Bay Chess Club due to the Corona Virus. This is not a decision we wanted to take, however the health of participants is the first priority and the club can no longer meet the requirements of Government recommendations. Important information is below.

The reasons for the suspension are due to the following:
1) Today's Government recommendation that people stay 1.5 meters apart. The chess club cannot operate in such conditions.
2) The ban on indoor meetings of groups over 100 and even though we are well below this number, such a ban indicates that meeting indoors is not advisable.
3) Similar suspensions for the majority of Victorian Chess Clubs.

The club will provide regular (minimum monthly) updates regarding activities. However, early indications is that this may take 6 months to clear up to a sufficient level to permit the club to meet. The club's website will also advise of the ban and provide important communication information.

We will provide refunds to those members who have paid membership fees (please provide bank details to me privately if you have paid and would like membership to be refunded this way). Otherwise, if the club is able to open later in the year, we will charge a pro-rata membership and memberships already paid can cover this (a later refund of the pro-rata discount can be provided at this time).

If the club is able to resume later in the year, we will revise the calendar to suit, along with club championship qualification if needed.
