The 2016 Tata Steel Chess Tournament which held in the Netherlands came to an end yesterday, 31st of January, 2016. Gm Magnus Carlsen emerged winner of the Masters section with a brilliant performance of 9/13. It was an exciting final day as a win by Gm Fabiano Caruana would have had him level on points with Carlsen but Gm Evgeny Tomashevky was having none of it as he was able to secure a win in what could arguably have been Caruana's worst game of the tournament. He tied for second place with Gm Ding Liren, both of them finishing the tournament with 8 points each

Carlsen has now won the tournament 5 times, matching the record of Indian Grandmaster, Viswanathan Anand.

Another Gm whom some people have tagged as the person to overthrow Carlsen in the future by the name ofWei Yi finished the tournament with a solid 6.5/13, considering he's only 16 years old!

Female Grandmaster, Hou Yifan finished in 12th place alongside Gm Michael Adams and Gm Loek Van Wely.

Elsewhere, the Challengers tournament presented us with a three way tie for first place as Adhiban Baskaran, Alexey Dreev and Eltaj Safarli all finished the tournament with a solid 9 points out of 13. However, Baskaran earned promotion to participate in next year's masters section as he had a better head to head result against the other two.

Gm David Navara and youngster Jorden van Foreest both won the Vugar Gashimov award for fair play.
