Hi All,

The Mackay Open for 2016 is back on once again with a beefed up prize fund to play for too! With a total $2800 in prizes this shapes up to be an exciting tournament. The venue is the Harrup Park Country Club, which has many facilities for you to enjoy during your games.

The Mackay Chess Club is a super friendly group who would love to welcome you all to the tournament this year so check out the details and come along for this great event.

I'll even be there as the arbiter so I hope to see you there!!

You can see the flyer at: http://caq.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/2016-Mackay-Open-Flyer-FINAL.pdf

Just letting you all know that there are plenty of great deals on motel accomodation here at the moment due to the downturn in mining industyr and oversupply of motel accomodation. A search on the web will show you what is available. We can arrange transport to and from airport and to and from venue each day if you need it. Hoping we do not have any cyclone and road flooding issues like last year. Our principal sponsor has asked that 50% of their sponsorship of $1,500 be allocated to the junior section so hoping to see some out of town juniors as well. Total cash pool of $2,800 with $800.00 first prize. Looking forward to seeing old and new faces.

Regards

Dale ( Club President)

So please consider me as a 60% certain entry!

Please disregard above note. Other commitments in Melbourne render Mackay trip unattainable!
Maybe next time if everything else OK
Cheers and good luck!

Your tournament prize list is most impressive Dale! Did you know Stephen Solomon has moved to Mackay? You should see him at your great tournament I think!

Now is a good time to checkout Webjet for cheap plane trips to Mackay! The tournament is on Saturday February 20 and Sunday February 21. Remember, once you find the cheap flight you want, go to that airline website to book your flight! For full entry details, checkout the new CAQ Website www.caq.org.au and look under Coming Events!

Looking forward to it, the venue and organisation of this tournament is fantastic, and Cyclone season permitting I'll be there.

Hi Mark - did not know Stephen had moved here until last Tuesday night which was our first club night back after school holidays - walked into the library where we meet and flabbergasted to see Stephen in foyer. He has kindly offered to do some coaching for us and many members are excited to have someone of his calibre at the club and looking forward to developing their chess over the next 6 months. Hopefully we can pick up some new players as word gets around.

As for the tournament we currently have 8 confirmed entries however hoping this will grow quickly in the next two weeks. Last year we ended up with 22 ( from memory) and would have been around 28 but for the cyclone stopping a number of players from making the road trip. No cyclones around at present and hoping we do not see any this year.

I would like to see some good numbers as I have been thinking that Mackay could possibly host the QLD Open in next couple of years and have a number of potential sponsors who would be encouraged to back our efforts for that if we can get good numbers this year.

As noted in earlier post - there are great deals on accomodation here with the oversupply of motels and we can arrange transport to and from airport and motels for visitors.

Cheers

Dale

I would have tried to make the trip if I didn't have to work. I would like to encourage those who have not yet planned a Mackay trip to give it some serious thought: a very well organised event, with a very significant prize structure! I wish the organisers all the best.

Cyclone is well off coast and at this stage (fingers crossed) expected to exit area where it would be a threat to QLD coast so looking forward to seeing you and anyone else looking to drive up.

Thanks

I believe at this stage - 5 players rated over 2000 - Stephen, Brodie, Gene Nakauchi, Tristan Stephens and David Castor plus a solid field around 1300 - 1700. Entries as at today possible 24 with some strong juniors vying for junior prize pool of $750.00 out of the total pool of $2,800 cash plus other prizes

Congratulations to Dale Noack and The Mackay Chess Club for putting on very strong and well attended 2016 Mackay Open! I really enjoyed playing over the Stephen Solomon v Brodie McClymont board 1 round 4 clash- I think Stephen was looking for a stalemate trick and fought to the death! Thanks to Andrew Fitzpatrick for posting the game on ChessChat! I am already hoping I can make it up to Mackay in 2017! The next weekender in Queensland is The Hemmingway WeekEnder at Paddington (near Brisbane city) on Saturday March 5 and Sunday March 6. Get the entry form on the Chess Association of Queensland Website now: www.caq.org.au
See you there!

Dale, thanks for another wonderful tournament. As usual well arbitrated (if that is a word) by Andrew. Looking forward to next year.

I would just like to thank everyone for playing over the weekend especially those who travelled from Townsville, Brisbane, Bundaberg and other areas. Special thanks to Gene Nakauchi and Brodie for coming from Brisbane to add the strength to the tournament given that Stephen Solomon is living here short term and David Castor came down from Townsville. Unfortunately Tristan Stevens could not make it from Gladstone due to work commitments. Thanks again to Andrew for his excellent work as director of play / arbiter. Our main sponsor has indicated they will consider something similar again next year which is good news.
As in the previous two years the winner received a magnificent hand turned rook on a base woodturned by one of our local woodturners from local Mackay Cedar - a beautifully grained local species - a great souvenir from Mackay. The money is nice but the trophy lasts longer. Brodie has two of these now - will have to look at a Knight for next year perhaps? Thanks everyone.

Dale
