Allegro tomorrow! We've been getting consistent high numbers of participants even during the Australian Championships being held next door so even bigger allegro's are expected for the rest of 2016. Also, do not forget there is a weekly ''upset prize'' - for the player who manages to score the biggest upset of the tournament! :owned:

I am in the process of classifying MCC Allegro players.

So far I have formed four main categories:

The Allegrians

The Allegriens (I belong in this category)

The Allegrators

The Allegroids

I will be able to expand on that as soon as I will resume my Allegro participation
hopefully by next Saturday.

I was pleasantly surprised to see an Aus Day w/ender participant,
to take a R2 bye in order to enter the Allegro. He is definitely a true believer.
An Allegrian.

This week Michael will also be providing a vocal offering from Gilbert and Sullivans "The Pirates of Penzance" in fulll costume as "The Pirate King". After regaling the masses with song, Michael will kindly provide an assortment of tapas at the end of play free of charge.

Yea, James is Interstate I think but as well as Baron and Puccini there will hopefully (and most probably) also be: Canfell, Nam, Nguyen, 2180 fide rated visitor from Germany & Partsi - so will be a fairly strong field with 3 players Fide-rated over 2300.
Also, participation of the likes of Izzat and Dale can not be ruled out.

What was the result for this weeks Baron Benefit Comp?

I won eventually....but not without a ''drama''. In Rd.3 - I managed to hang my rook. Luckily, I managed to win the remaining games and other results went my way so 6/7 was sufficient. Given that I also blundered mate in 1 and a rook last week - the trend is not good.

Yes, well spotted. I'm doing a tour of local chess clubs to see if anything interesting is going on. I dropped into Croydon the other day ... well run club with a good website and I like that they post their tournament games there to play through. The only draw-back seemed to be the lack of an analysis room.

I gave a lecture to the Novice Group at the MCC on Wednesday which was good fun. Had a nice chat with the President, Elizabeth, and we tried to identify players in the photo of the 100th MCC Birthday Tournament that she had just had framed. Unfortunately I left my demo board at the club so returned on Saturday afternoon to pick it up and had a quick look at the allegro. Only one of my students was playing and, apart from James and Jack, the field looked pretty weak so I left. There is a good French wine and cheese restaurant just around from the corner of the MCC so I may be paying the club more visits soon.

Today I dropped into Box Hill CC which seems to be going really well and has already sold-out the August Rookies Cup. The Vic. Champs were being played when I arrived there and were being broadcast live .... good to see Bobby continuing to play well and lead the event.

I was puzzled to read on the notice-board a flyer advertising the coaching services of Kanan Izzat which included the claim that he is the 2016 Australian Champion! "Izzat a mistake" I thought to myself? (Note clever use of Baron-like spelling). I think Bobby would agree with me.....

Probably this is a job for Chess Victoria :). As for individual clubs, I noticed that quite a few of them are using facilities around to increase customer appeal. Given proximity to Brunswick street, MCC probably has a competitive advantage though :)

Do you know how many Allegroes you have won, Michael?

Not sure but recently, not that many. As far as I remember I was dominant in the early 1990's (mainly due to lack strong opposition) but ever since allegros resumed after a break in the 90's,it has been extremely competitive so winning is hard. Right now, we have IMs and FMs playing regularly. Also participation numbers are also up from 10-15 players back then to around 35-50 each week (it is seasonal I guess :)).

P.S. The best way to see what the great allegro ''planet'' at the MCC is like - come and join the allegro some time!

VOTE ON ALLEGRO TIME CONTROL

The time control for Allegro this Saturday 22 October 2016 and 5 November 2016 will be 13 minutes per player per game, plus 2 second increment for each move. Note there is no Allegro on 29 October due to the Hjorth Open.

MCC will hold an informal secret ballot to determine whether the Saturday Allegro time control should be:
- 15 minutes per player per game; or
- 13 minutes per player per game, plus 2 second increment for each move.

No other options will be considered.

When: Saturday, 5 November 2015, just before Round 7 of the Allegro

Eligibility: Only players that have entered the Allegro on that day may vote. You do not need to be a club member to vote. Proxies not allowed.

Format:
Elizabeth Warren (Club President) will be the chairperson for the vote.
General discussion for maximum 5 minutes
Ballot papers will be handed out. Elizabeth plus one scrutineer will count the votes and announce the result.

The vote will be run strictly to time and should not take more than 10 minutes.

Please note that this is an informal vote. Whatever the outcome, the Committee will periodically evaluate the suitability of the time control. The Committee reserves the right to set time controls in all MCC tournaments.

Questions: contact the Committee on melbchessclub@gmail.com

My view is that 13+2 is the better time control. This is because:

(1) There will be fewer disputes, which often arise in a time scramble.

(2) Players won't be able to milk the clock. As such, the result should be determined by the position on the board rather than who can move the quickest. This will also result in higher quality endgames rather than people throwing pieces at each other.

(3) It won't make the Allegro longer. This was demonstrated last year when we had 13+2 for four weeks and Allegro ran to time every week.

It will also bring MCC in line with modern international practice of having increments.

sounds fair and logical, although it is extremely hard for me to play chess on Saturdays I will make sure I 'll come to the Club and vote for the 13+2 option on November 5!

Wow...so I better urge all my friends to play in that allegro just so they can vote the ''right way''...I think if this is how voting is to be won and lost...after one year, you may have to turn up again cause we will be voting again. If the vote will be won/lost due to people who do not usually play allegro turning up just so they can vote in a particular week it will turn voting into a staged show.

There's actually already a built-in bias in favour of 15+0 because the people that don't like 15+0, but would come if it was 13+2, don't currently play in the tournament.

Would be great if you could come and support the right outcome, Elliott. Remember you have to play in the Allegro to be eligible to vote. The vote will be before round 7.

Good point. If you have an annual subscription process where you collect names and other details on a form you could add a survey to the bottom of that form which should abate self-selection bias.

I think it is important that majority of the players on that day are allegro regulars. Even more important that people do not come on particular day ''just because I want to vote for 13+2 or 15+))...and then they disappear again for a year...I think given that this is not a political issue - we could even have an open ballot rather than ''secret'' one.

Anyway, we will see on the day who is there. Also, proponents of 13+2 have been telling me that 13+2 increases participation numbers. This is a very solid argument in favour of the change, so once I see statistical evidence - I will change my mind and start supporting 13+2. Anyway, just like last time - we can have 2 speaker before the vote...one for 13+2 and one for 15 0 to promote their viewpoint :).

This would be a great idea, if all of the club members would play allegros. As for annual subscription for allegro, sounds like a good idea..but I think it is quite complicated to manage.

I sure will UrBANE and thanks.

now as for

my inability to play on Saturday allegros won't last forever.

I am in the very happy position to announce that I managed to take a break from my other Sat duties
until the end of Jan 2017 and as such I will be able to participate in the MCC's Saturday Allegros unless
I am overseas (New Zealand) or interstate ( for Gosford, Launceston & Brisbane tournaments).

It still allows me to play in at least six allegros including the time control vote one!

As I noted in previous I am definitely inclined to vote for the 13+2 option.

That doesn't necessarily mean that I will not listen to points made by or participate
in discussions with proponents of the other option.

This would be a great idea, if all of the club members would play allegros. As for annual subscription for allegro, sounds like a good idea..but I think it is quite complicated to manage.

It depends on the questions you ask. For example you could ask the following questions

How likely are you to play in a Saturday Allegro with a time control of 15+0?
Unlikely, Somewhat likely, Very likely, Certain.

How likely are you to play in a Saturday Allegro with a time control of 13+2?
Unlikely, Somewhat likely, Very likely, Certain.

Then you are getting to the nub of the issue. Number of club players who would likely play under different time controls.

The vote isn't about taking sides or impassioned speeches. The point is to offer a potentially improved tournament to the players and members. I don't attend allegro too often but would still like to see it changes to 13+2 because I think it will be a better tournament.
