Details at http://www.tasmanianchessassociation.org/tca-events/2016/2/5/royal-hobart-regatta-weekender and see post 5 below.

This is a new 7-round GP Class One being trialled as a leadup to the Tas Open that has the same schedule. Players can take two half-point byes in rounds 1-5. Note that because of venue costs entries are required by Feb 1.

Unfortunately I am away on fieldwork that weekend and therefore can't play.

Now that sounds enticing! Tassie in February is exceptionally beautiful! :)

I'd strongly advise intending interstate entrants to either arrange refundable airfares (if those exist) or else have a good holiday Plan B worked out in case insufficient numbers force cancellation. I'm not sure where exactly the bar will be set yet but I don't think it will be viable if there's less than half a dozen by Feb 1.

... or else have a good holiday

No problems with that! My best ever holiday in Tassie was 2-3 years ago when flights were cancelled due to some silly volcano dust from Chile or somewhere around there.
The announcement from Virgin (Virgin Blue as it was called then I think) Airways came right after the end of the tournament!
I always tend to whinge when tournaments are held in lovely places of the planet and I am forced to go play chess! :) In that particular case
I extended my staying in the island to about 5 days, and came back to Melbourne on the Spirit of Tasmania! Plus I had the airfares refunded!
The whole thing is still a thought though. Feb is not exactly a commitments - free month for me!

We've had the unfortunate withdrawal of Charlie Rolph, which brings us back down to 3 registered and 1 possible.

Minimum number is 8 adults, 10 if some are juniors.

So we're hoping for some more! Remember to register on or before the 1st of Feb. If the minimum isn't reached by then the event will be cancelled :(

Ug! Two byes???

0.5 point byes! Any player can take up 2 half point byes in the tournament except in the final 2 rounds. We put in this provision in case people have commitments on 1 day, but not the rest.

I thought I'd mention it in case you're not aware.

Ok, I will think about it, but I would feel very uncomfortable with the idea of 1 free point and just as uncomfortable with something equivalent in points to a forfeit. Sort of a lose-lose situation. D

Look forward to seeing a few mainlanders in March for these events. Launceston is only an hour from Melbourne and 1.5 hrs from Sydney. Flights are easy and often inexpensive. The Tasmanian Open and the Tas. Lightning should be a great w/e - even if you can't make it to Hobart this w/e.

I second that notion, having some mainlanders come down for the Tasmanian Open would be fantastic! The open is a GP event, and I know there would be several players more than willing to share accommodation and swap stories (chess or other) over a cuppa or something stronger!

Keep your ears to the ground for more info in the coming weeks.

As the event is guaranteed to go ahead I'll be holding entries open until 12 noon on Friday.

In the interest of getting the first round sorted on time I will not be accepting entries at the venue - an honestly with all the advertising, begging, and pleading to get entrants if you don't know if you're going to play or not by 12 noon on the day then... there is nothing else for it!

After 2 no-shows we have a clean 8 which means our Swiss turned into a RR.

This is somewhat good news as running a 7 round swiss with 9 people would have been difficult!

Last nights Blitz (3+2) cross table

A small group for the blitz last night, as a result of that we decided to play a casual double round robin, everyone was refunded their money and we played for the fun of it. Peter and Dave destroyed the competition, taking only 1 point off each other to finish equal first. William schooled me in how to lose from a won position... twice!

Tonight's Bullet (1+1) cross table

Another small crowd for tonight's bullet competition, but we did have 1 drop in with George French coming along to fill the bye spot. Again we played a free, just-for-fun, double round robin. The tournament took less than 40 minutes. Peter confessed that in several tournaments he's waited longer than that for it to start, let alone the whole thing being done and dusted!

Peter mopped up with a picket fence, while Dave came in second and I finished up outright 3rd.

Facinating marketing efforts too. This year they have not paid off that handsomely but I am pretty sure they laid good foundation for the next year's event as all the chess-chatters have been following.

Facinating marketing efforts too. This year they have not paid off that handsomely but I am pretty sure they laid good foundation for the next year's event as all the chess-chatters have been following.

The marketing has been relentless... hopefully next year we'll have a venue of our own (so to speak) and will not require the minimum number of entries, I think having the certainty of guaranteeing an event will be run makes it easier to commit.

In other news, this round is still going, but William Rumley keeps going from strength to strength defeating Andrew Smith. Andrew dropped a piece early on and Will held his own, offering a rook in the later game for a forced mating sequence. Eric Rayner took out junior Sean Carpenter in short order, while I defeated Alex with an exchange sac for a decisive king-side attack.

Dave Rolph is in a tense battle with Chris Shepherd. Chris sacced a bishop for 2 pawns in the opening to pull Dave's king into the centre, but Dave has consolidated and is trying to prove the piece is worth more than the pawns.

Congrats to Ian and the HCC on a well run event. Though the field was very small, it was evenly matched, fun and friendly. I especially liked all the casual chess between rounds and the group analysis/study sessions that were always going.

Fantastic effort on the report (full PGN, a great rarity for a Tassie tournament!) as well as all the time you put into organising and playing. Well done!

I kind of bullied people into using my notation booklets before taking them away and copying the games. I think I'll use this strategy for the Tasmanian Open!
