The club championship starts tomorrow. There will be 4 rating divisions, so it will be enjoyable to play no matter what your level. As this is the 150th year celebration we have enticed 5 previous club champions playing for the once in a life time title of MCC Grand Champion.

http://www.melbournechessclub.org/events/2016/mcc-club-championship

Before round 3 we plan an historic photo of the players in the 150th Club Championship. If you want to be part of this history then you have to play.

2 half point byes are possible up until round 7.

Please make sure your friends know about this event so they do not miss out. See you there...

Simon has talked me into playing :-)
I was hoping to play in Thailand, which clashes with the last round, but have abandoned that idea.
He rang me too late for the first round and said I could have a bye, but obviously I don't want to take a half point bye when I have a higher expectation than 0.5 in round 1. However, a full point bye is unethical as it would disadvantage the other contenders, so I can only play if someone enters late or if one of the people who took a half point bye decides they would like to play after all on another night.
So I am hoping to play, but it's in the lap of the Gods.
I'm not sure if I'll be competitive against the top players after this much time away, but will give it a go, as who wouldn't want to compete for the title of Grand Poobah?
Might see you all there next Monday.
Guy West.

Club Championship started yesterday with over 40 players, and a pretty strong top end smile emoticon

A few nice upset wins in round 3. Vishal Bhat's victory over Jack Puccini and James Watson beating Bobby Yu are great results! Thai Ly played very well to draw with IM Mirko.
Carl Gorka was playing very well against James Morris, but I am not sure how James managed to win. I will wait for Carl's blog on their game!

Overall this is one of the toughest tournaments I have played and there are no easy games from the top to the last boards. The exciting thing is only 3 rounds are over and 6 more to go. The fire works are really on.Go MCC Players!

My game against James was pretty crazy and the variations are pretty interesting, according to James. I'll try and post some stuff over the weekend.

It was a great third round (http://gorkachc.blogspot.com.au/2016/02/mcc-ch-round-3.html), bringing us the dream pairing of Morris-West in round 4!

LOL. First time I've ever been accused of being a positional genius! To be honest it's more like 'Young, quick thinking tactical wizard James Morris vs old, slow thinking (former) tactical wizard Guy West.'

But thanks. :-)

If they agreed the draw on move 56 or thereabouts then Kaitlin is either a genius and/or a professional psychic! :)

Draw agreed after black's 51st move because triple repetition was inevitable, but if we'd played it out it and James had chosen to try a couple of different squares for his king... it would have been 56 moves. :-)

Indeed amazing how Vishal won this endgame. Ari must have miscalculated the K & Pawns endgame somehow. Also, surprised James did not create more problems for Guy in that endgame. Looked winning (or almost winning) for white at one stage

Perhaps after 25...g5??, losing a pawn for nothing?

Just as annoying was 13...Qxd1?, because the whole point of 12...dxe5 was to play 13...0-0-0. It's a typical effect of rust to spend ages in a complex position calculating variations and then next move have a brain fade, making a quick blunder that wasn't the intended line.

It is pretty hard to work out how this could have happened. After the first queen swap in the endgame black is winning and after the second one he is losing when ...Kh7 was probably still a win. Perhaps he missed 45...Ke7 46.Kc5 Kd7 47.Kb6!

A relatively quiet round. (http://gorkachc.blogspot.com.au/2016/03/mcc-championship-draws-galore.html) Perhaps some players were saving themselves for Ballarat?

I lost my preponed game against Vishal Bhat. It was a tense, seesawing game, with both of us getting short of time in the end. We both knocked back draw offers at different stages. I tried to post the (lightly annotated) game from Chessbase, but it was full of dollar signs and other font errors, so unless there is some simple way to do it I won't bother.

For those who missed my announcement, I (the arbiter) will not be available Monday 4th, round 8. Thai and a subcommittee have agreed to take over that role during the round. Elizabeth will open the club before hand.

Actually I will be uncontactable from Wednesday 30th until Tuesday 5th, so if you need any assistance during those times please contact the tournament organiser Elizabeth Warren (0400 405 220, elizabethlaurenwarren@gmail.com).

Good luck everybody

Because of the Doeberl the next round (round 8) is on Monday 4th April. It is correct I will be away for that round. Thai will be publishing the pairings on Thursday 31 March in advance of the round.

James please note that there is NO GAME on Monday 28th March.

Go Vishal, the Hobsons Bay superstar, the best of the West, seemingly unstoppable, outright leader.

Our club is holding its breath, but I think he cannot be caught!

Hard assignment versus Mirko in last round!

I take $100 bet, for a flag win. (none of that = 1st share title nonsense)
If a decider play-off needed then another day another bet!

So I bet for James to win.
If he does the money goes to the MCC to use as they see fit.
If he loses the money goes to HBCC to use as they see fit!

Vishal has certainly had a great tournament and should he win the title, he will fully deserved it as he will have faced all the titled players (FMs and IMs) in the field.

If there is anyone with the means and inclination, I would be curious to know what his rating performance to date has been. Vishal has played in sequence:

Joshua Culbert
Anthony Harris
Jack Puccini
Ari Dale
James Morris
Thai Ly
Guy West
Carl Gorka

Vishal has certainly had a great tournament...
Really amazing results! I was curious whether coupled with the 40 K-factor (as a junior) he would gain enough points to make the CM rating band... so far he's gained a whopping 3.2+8.4+36.4+36.4-3.2+19.6+36+30.4=167.2 points in this tourney already, which is very good progress :D

I entered the results (with current FIDE ratings) into a performance rating calc, and I got "The calculated logistic performance rating is 2584, while the calculated normal performance is 2576."

That sounds like pax's page, which is excellent.

Trivia: no Australian player has yet purchased a CM title obtained by rating. (One approached me about doing so but didn't manage to hit the 2200.)

Interesting that in all the other events that Vishal has been playing recently, his performance ratings have been more or less in line with his current rating.

I know there was an event recently he performed very well in, Hobson Bay Cup or something, I know it was the first tournament that spiked these +70/80's, late last year.
I think surely that performance rating was 2000, but he went negative in Doeberl I believe

Except for the small fact that Vishal has gained around 500 rating points in the last 2 years. Perhaps that is not 'recent' enough for you?

Interesting that most of your chesschat comments can be taken a couple of ways. How about you tell us what you really think! :hmm:

And one thing he's admitted himself is he's gotten very lucky, he's been playing very well but against Jack he just simply outprepped him and got crushing position out of the opening

Vishal is only 14 at the moment. Everybody has their ups and downs. He had a great tournament so far at MCC. Whether he wins this tournament or not, we are really proud of his achievements in this tournament and would like him to go and perform at his best.

As a parent, we want him to win this tournament as well as many more games/tournaments. If he wins this tournament, it will be one of his great achievements.

Should be very proud of him, not only from his Chess but also how respectful and friendly he is to everyone around him, usually juniors get extremely cocky when their rating skyrockets like this, but Vishal is very friendly and very humble in victory and in defeat

Well done to all the prize winners, particularly James and Vishal.

Early on tonight, Vishal appeared to win a pawn for almost nothing against Mirko. I honestly thought at that stage, his title was almost his. However, Mirko played very wily chess and was able to swap down to a tricky ending where although a pawn down, Mirko had great activity. I didn't see how it ended but Mirko obviously worked that activity to gain the point.

Then boards 2 and 3 were the last to finish. At one stage late in both games, it appeared as if James may only have been drawing against Malcolm, while Guy was pressing me in a tricky ending. A 3-way tie was a distinct possibility.

However, I was able to draw by creating a light square blockade/fortress, while (I think) Malcolm lost on time while 2 pawns down in a rook and bishop ending.

Overall, James played with great determination tonight and throughout the tournament and well deserved the title after a tough slog.

Solid performance is putting it lightly. FIDE rating calculations say he has gained a whopping 156.80 points from this tournament alone  So now he is over 2100 mark. :D
