MELBOURNE CHESS CLUB

‘An event for real chess fanatics!’

When: Friday October 2nd, beginning at 10am

Where: Melbourne Chess Club, 66 Leicester St, Fitzroy 3065

Format: 10 player round robin (hopefully several, based on playing strength - or Swiss, depending on numbers)
Each player plays each opponent 6 times (54 games in total)

Bonus Points: A bonus point will be awarded to a player who defeats an opponent 6-0 (in what is known as a “Fischer score”).

Timetable: 9.30am, entries close
10.00am, round 1
11.00am, round 2
12.00 noon, round 3
1.00pm, lunch break
1.30pm, round 4
2.30pm, round 5
3.30pm, round 6
4.30pm, round 7
5.30pm, round 8
6.30pm, round 9

Time Controls: Blitz (5 minutes per player per game)

Prizes: 90% of money collected in entry fees. With a field of 10 MCC members ($200), the prize pool would be as follows (in each group):
1st $80, 2nd $50, 3rd $30, 4th $20

Parking: Lots of free parking close to MCC on public holidays.

Entry Fees: $20 MCC members, $30 non-members

Conduct: Players are expected to play EVERY game of the event. Withdrawals are not permitted due to the style of the event. Withdrawing from a tournament like this gives each of your unplayed opponents 7 points (not just 1) and thus ruins the whole event for all players involved. Anyone who does not play all games will NOT be permitted to play in this event again. This event isn’t for everyone. If you can not handle it, please do not enter.

Advice: Get a good night sleep the night before.
Prepare for your opponents.
Arm yourself with chocolate and caffeine drinks.
Eat a high carb dinner the night before (pasta etc).
Eat a good breakfast (but not too much).
Don’t play blitz between rounds.
Don’t get disheartened if you start badly – there are 54 games!
This is a marathon, not a sprint!
This is not work, it’s a fun chess event – enjoy it!

Enquiries: For any questions, please contact Sylvester Urban on sylvester.urban@gmail.com

How is the colour balance decided in each round?

How is the colour balance decided in each round?

The round robin tables indicate who is white in the first game.

It's now lunchtime and there have been some interesting results in the first four rounds. Most notably, Michael Baron put Jack Puccini to the sword with a Fischer score of 5-0 (+1 bonus point). Urban-Baron was 2-3, including a mate in one which Baron fell into in time trouble! Ray Yang is having a good tournament, having clipped the wings from several seeds - including defeating both Tony Tosevski and Eamonn O'Molloy 4-1 and 3-2 respectively.

I expect some exciting finishes this afternoon. We still have 7 rounds to go.

Prizes are as advertised.

Michael Baron wins with 9 Fischer scores! Urban was close to catching up to Puccini but allowed some premature draws, not realising how close it was! Urban would have finished 2nd if there were no Fischer scores (Puccini had 5 Fischer scores to Urban's 3). Ray Yang exceeded all expectations and finished 4th.

Final results:
61.5 Michael Baron FM (1st)
48 Jack Puccini FM (2nd)
46.5 Sylvester Urban (3rd)
38.5 Ray Yang (4th)
37.5 Eamonn O'Molloy
35.5 Andrew Fletcher
29 Tony Tosevski
24 Tanya Kolak
17 Alistair McCutcheon
11 Niruruthi Ravichandren
9 Myiesha Maunders
4 Barnaby Chiverton

The biggest pleasant surprise of the tournament (for me anyway) was rapid improvement of juniors and young players. Beware, new wave of MCC stars is on its way!

Not much of an improvement considering you destroyed 75% of the field with Fischer scores! :P :) Excellent performance Michael, congrats!
