Can the event info be updated on CAQ site? It says that Marist Rosalie College is the venue.

The main man - Gene Nakuachi has officially entered the tournament.

Don't forget the new venue, QUT Kelvin Grove Cafeteria.

Well, if Gene Nakuachi is playing I'm there! ;)

Seriously, I could do with another lesson and hope I am lucky enough to play him.

Last time I played Gene was pretty instructive. I played my favourite Sicilian as black. A line where you play a6 then b5, taking space on the queenside. I had just played b5 (about half-way through what I thought was going to be "my" book opening) when bam! He sacrificed a bishop on b5. Shocked, I took back with a pawn and he took with a knight, losing a piece for two pawns early in the game. I hadn't seen this sac before and did not think it was possible. For a moment I got all excited and confident, then the game got complicated and Gene thoroughly outplayed me to win quickly.

After the game I asked Gene about the sacrifice. He said, quietly, "It's just one of the possible moves in the position."

So, I went home and put it in the computer. The computer said he'd gone from being about +1 to -0.5 on that move, and then showed a line for black with a rook lift and over to the centre of the heavily congested board as best. Something I didn't even consider in the game.

A month or two later, when I was tidying up around home, I found my book on the Sicilian and looked up the line. Sure enough, this sacrifice was in the book, though it was buried in the middle of dense section of obscure lines. The grandmaster's analysis of the line was, black should be okay in this complex position. With best play it should be a draw, as white has adequate compensation for the sacrificed piece.

Looking forward to the Hemingway Open!

International Master Moulthun Ly has also entered The Hemmingway Open! It's on this weekend Saturday September 5 and Sunday September 6!

Because of the lack of players it appears that no one cares about chess anymore or perhaps it's because people have dads for father's day

bundys_bro

Or perhaps it's because the entry fee is ludicrous

Or perhaps it's because the entry fee is ludicrous

I think it's because of Father's day,the entry fee is reasonable,if u want good prizemoney it has to come from somewhere.

The top board clash between FM Gene Nakauchi and IM Brodie McClymont will be worth watching! Gene has won the last 3 games against Brodie, but Brodie still leads their head to head clashes quite comfortably! My $1 win bet is on Brodie to defeat Gene in this R4 encounter. If Pat could place this game on Chesschat tomorrow it would be most appreciated. All 3 Big Three clashes would be great to see!

Thank-you for the Gene Nakauchi - Brodie McClymont game Pat! Congrats to Brodie for winning the event with 5.5 out of 6! The trifecta would not pay too much unless you had Ostapenko in your combinations. We now have The NVDG Classic at the Gold Coast on Saturday September 19 and Sunday September 20, The Leo Wilkinson Memorial at Rothwell on Saturday September 26 and Sunday September 27 and The Queensland Chess Championships at Helensvale from Thursday October 1 to Monday October 5 to look forward to!

Some interesting ones. But the only one I've managed to obtain is below, in which Brodie's winning position is ruined by time-trouble

[Event "2015 Hemingway Open"]
[Date "2015.09.06"]
[Round "4"]
[White "Nakauchi, Gene"]
[Black "McClymont, Brodie"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[ECO "B94"]
[Opening "Sicilian: Najdorf (6.Bg5)"]

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Bg5 Nbd7 7. Be2 e6
8. Qd2 b5 9. a3 Bb7 10. O-O-O Be7 11. f4 Nxe4 12. Nxe4 Bxe4 13. Bf3 Bxf3
14. gxf3 Bxg5 15. fxg5 Qc7 16. f4 O-O-O 17. f5 e5 18. Nb3 Nb6 19. Qa5 Kb7
20. Rd3 Nc4 21. Qb4 Rc8 22. Rhd1 Ka7 23. Rc3 Qb6 24. a4 h6 25. a5 Qd8 26. f6
gxf6 27. gxh6 Rxh6 28. Nd2 Rh4 29. b3 Ne3 30. Nc4 Nxd1 31. Rd3 Rhxc4 32. bxc4
Rxc4 33. Qd2 Qc7 34. Qxd1 Qxa5 35. Qg1+ Rd4 36. Qe3 Qa1+ 37. Kd2 Qa5+ 38. c3
Qa2+ 39. Kc1 Qa1+ 40. Kc2 Qa2+ 41. Kc1 Qa1+ 42. Kc2 1/2-1/2

Thanks for that, Brodie's only dropped half point. He seems to be Moulthun's bÍte noire, with a record of wins that belies their ratings.

my game against Moulthun someone can put it in a game interface 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 d6 8.c3 O-O 9.h3 Nb8 10.d4 Nbd7 11.Nbd2 Bb7 12.Bc2 Re8 13.Nf1 Bf8 14.Ng3 g6 15.b3 Rb8 16.a4 c6 17.Bg5 Bg7 18.Qd2 Qc7 19.Bh6 Bxh6 20.Qxh6 Qd8 21.b4 Qe7 22.Bb3 Qf8 23.Qd2 h6 24.Nh4 d5 25.dxe5 Nxe5 26.f4 Nc4 27.Bxc4 bxc4 28.e5 Nd7 29.Nf3 c5 30.f5 d4 31.e6 (I liked this position because of the amusing pawn structure but I already stuffed up with 29. nf3) fxe6 32.fxe6 Nf6 33.Ne5 Qg7 34.bxc5 dxc3 35.Qxc3 Rxe6 36.Nxc4 Ne4 37.Qxg7+ Kxg7 38.Nd6 Nxc5 39.Rxe6 Nxe6 40.Rb1 Nc5 41.Nge4 Bxe4 42.Rxb8 Bd3 43.a5 Kf6 44.Re8 Ne6 45.Kf2 h5 46.h4 g5 47.Ke3 Bg6 48.Ra8 Nc5 49.Rc8 Ne6 50.hxg5+ Kxg5 51.Rc6 Nf4 52.Rc5+

Thanks for that. Indeed, the key game between the winner and runner-up is probably the most important. No alternative was suggested for 29. Nf3 though, and this was the only move criticised although presumably the loser made worse moves.

29.e6 presumably; it obviously causes black problems. The box also likes 29.f5!? with the main idea being 29...Nxe5 30.fxg6 fxg6 31.Nxg6!! and if the piece sac is accepted by ...Nxg6 32.Rf1 with a winning attack but even an IM would be doing well to calculate that and all its sidelines in a G60/15.

33...Qg7 was the beginning of big trouble. 33...dxc3 34.Qxc3 cxb4 35.Qxc4 Bd5 and black is probably OK and gets extra style points for going from 3 to 0 pawns on a file in three half-moves. :)
