Now I am going to have to look at the Grob (1. g4), with black, of course! Happily, there is enough time between now and 4 December to do that. But as to playing it myself, I'm not so sure. I think I'll let the good players attempt it as white.

I remember Marcus sitting on a table outside a tournament hall at the Gold Coast, wearing his old green and gold beanie, surrounded by excited chess players, while he extolled the virtues of employing the Grob in tournament practice and how he had never lost a game doing so. In fact, he said he had great results with this crazy opening.

So, I'm looking forward to this tournament. Eight rounds over two Friday nights is an interesting format which should see a lot of good chess played.

I have a book on THE KILLER GROB by Michael Basman so I can now hardly wait for Friday night December 4 and Friday night December 11 for The Marcus Porter Memorial. See you at THE GAP STATE HIGH SCHOOL on Waterworks Road The Gap for two fun Friday nights of chess. 10 minutes each plus 2 seconds a move will suit THE GROB perfectly! Full entry details can be seen under Coming Events on The Chess Association of Qld Website now: www.caq.org.au

I still think the classic book is "The Tactical Grob" by Claude F Bloodgood, a player with a very shady past, google him if you don't know the story

Take care and God bless, Bereaved

It has been a month since I learned of this memorial tournament for Marcus and since I submitted my original post. It has taken me the whole month to "get it", but now I have come around to the shocking realisation that I am indeed going to play the Grob with white.

It hurts just to type the words, "I am going to play the Grob", as 1. g4 goes against my entire chess philosophy of playing solidly with white, maintaining a small edge and nursing it along.

Still, this entirely appropriate prospect is somehow strangely enticing. Hurrah for the reinvigorating 1. g4!

Unsure if I can make it as I'm flying back to Brissie from Perth on the first Friday. I can see myself playing the Mini-Grob though: 1. g2-g4-j'adobe-g3 ;)

Just a reminder to everyone that this event is days away, so time to get your participation organised if you haven't already. For people wanting to play but without means to get to Ashgrove, I am sure a number of us will be able to help with transport. I know the players involved with the national school teams will be in Melbourne this weekend, but that group aside it would be great to have a large playing group. See you all on Friday. MD.

Could someone please clarify the venue and start time? This thread is saying that they have changed, but CAQ site is still saying that it's going in the Gap SHS.

Below is a report from the arbiter, Andrew Robinson.

Report – 4 December 2015: Marcus Porter Memorial

Tonight a good section of the Queensland chess community got together to participate in a chess tournament to honour Marcus Porter.

At the commencement, with Marcus’ parents Stephen and Anita present, Shane Mather talked about Marcus and his unique contribution to chess, and why he will be missed by all.

The large majority of players had pre-registered and were punctual, and can be commended for this as it allowed the tournament to commence on time (a rarity!). The time control was 10 minutes + 2 second Fischer increment, allowing four rounds to be played tonight, with the final four rounds scheduled for next Friday.

Round One saw most games go to form, as is often the way with a Swiss draw. The one exception was Joseph Tan’s victory over Tony Morris which won him the upset prize for the round.

Round Two featured several more upsets, notably Tom Maguire’s loss on Board Two in a Grob Opening game against The Gap CC’s Joshua Morris. Hughston Parle also did well to achieve a draw with Jacob Edward, while Joseph Tan claimed a second upset beating Michael Ostapenko (another Grob casualty).

Round Three saw most of the leaders consolidate with wins to the higher rated player being achieved on the top six boards. Jason Wang used the Grob to good effect to claim a point from Tom Maguire and also claim the upset prize for Round Three. This round also witnessed Marcus’ brother Angus Porter achieving a fine draw in his match with Alexander Kidd.

A draw in the Round Four clash between Tyson Walker and Andrew Mather allowed Moulthun Ly to move to outright first at the end of the night after a win over Michael D’Arcy.

All players conducted themselves impeccably on the first night, and we all look forward to some more great chess next Friday night.

The Grob Opening
It has been well known in chess circles for many years that Marcus’ favourite opening was the Grob (1. g4), with which he delighted in ambushing many unsuspecting opponents. As a tribute to Marcus and has quirky opening preference, a prize will be awarded to the player achieving the best points total after playing the Grob. After a request for clarification, it has been decided that games where players attempt the even more unusual Reverse Grob (1. … g5) will also accrue points towards the Grob prize.

The Leader for the Grob prize at the half way mark is Jacob Edwards followed by Moulthun Ly and Jason Wang.

Hope to see you this Friday wearing Marcus' trademark chess outfit, a beanie, oversized sun glasses and angry bird pants (I think they were PJ's but I never thought to ask). A prize awaits the best dressed or is it the worst dressed.

Congratulations Moulthun.

Any Grob games?

This was always going to be a notable event, but the event was played in outstanding spirit both on and off the board, and this made it all the more special. There were a large number of Grobs, Reversed Grobs and mutual Grobs, and a number of these were successful. Jacob Edwards won the prize for the most points scored with the Grob, while Tom Maguire was winner of the best dressed award. Both were presented with a yellow beanie.

Special thanks to Shane and the Mather family, the Gap Chess Club (including tournament DOP Andrew Robinson), and Stephen and Anita for this wonderful event. Thanks also to all the players, some of whom traveled from outside Brisbane. This will most likely become an annual tournament, so those who missed the inaugural edition will be able to take part next year.

Cheers,

Michael D'Arcy.

Yes, congratulations to Moulthun.

A large number of players embraced the grob theme and in total there were 73 attempts at the grob or reverse grob. Surprisingly the number grob attempts in the last 4 rounds was 46 compared to 27 in the first 4 rounds.

Congratulations to Jacob Edwards who led the way with 8 attempts scoring 5 points. Second was Tom Maguire who also scored 5 points out of 7 attempts (Tom missed playing the reverse grob in round 1 as this was only clarified in round 2). Jason Wang and Michael Ostapenko were equal third with 4 points out of 6 attempts. Moulthun was 5th also with 4 points from 4 attempts. We will put up a full list in the next few days.

Tom Maguire easily won the best dressed prize wearing the full Marcus outfit, beanie, over sized sunglasses, pj's pants and no shoes. Well done Tom.

Many thanks to the Porter family who donated a fabulous perpetual trophy, a beautiful clock trophy for the winner to keep and 2 Australian rugby beanies.

Thank you to everyone who played and helped make the event special for the Porter family.
