The trophy is named after me. It's OK, you're allowed to be jealous.

(I'm playing, by the way.)

I've sent entry forms (electronically) to the Burnie Pres. and the Burnie delegate for promotion. Do you know if any other Burnie players are likely to play, Ian?

Haven't heard about anyone else (I'm not playing in the current BCC tournament).

Devonport Speed Chess

Not an easy victory for me - I was trailing most of the evening after losing to David Rolph in round 2. (It was a Winawer ...Qc7 Qg4 where I (black of course) had some advantage but grabbed a pawn in a queenless middlegame and got in so much trouble from his bishop pair that I eventually went a pawn down then blundered a piece.) Eventually Denis beat Dave in the second-last round. Along the way I got mate down with 5 seconds on my clock vs James and won by illegal move vs David Hughes' lone king with one second on my clock. (Videos of both of these may be coming to the TCA website!)

There were a string of strange illegal move losses including one by playing 3...Ng8-e6, and one involving pieces of the same colour taking each other. There was also a promotion to the wrong colour queen in the Little vs D Rolph draw but it wasn't claimed.

Bonham-Rout. With a one-point lead at the time I was happy with a draw in this game.

1.Nf3 d6 2.e4 Nf6 3.Nc3 c5 4.Bb5+ Transposing to a slightly inferior variation of the Moscow Anti-Sicilian on the grounds of sticking to what I know. 4...Bd7 5.Bxd7+ Qxd7 6.0-0 Nc6 7.Re1 g6 8.d3 [8.e5] 8...Bg7 9.Qe2 0-0 10.e5 dxe5 11.Nxe5 Nxe5 12.Qxe5 b6 13.Bg5 Rfe8 14.Qf4 Nh5 [14...Nd5! 15.Qc4 (15.Nxd5 Qxd5 16.c4 Qd4=/+) 15...Nxc3 16.bxc3 b5 17.Qb3=/+] 15.Qf3 Rad8 16.Re2 Bf6 17.Bxf6 Nxf6 18.Rae1 Kg7 19.h3 e6 20.Ne4 Nxe4 Draw Agreed

McMahon - Bonham. Denis had strong chances including one win earlier on, after my 19th I then missed numerous wins and wimped out.

1.e4 e6 2.d3 d5 3.Nd2 Nf6 4.Ngf3 b6 5.g3 dxe4 I had looked at this move as something just a bit different from the usual KIA-vs-French setup as I was bored with it. However I hadn't looked at it for long enough to learn anything much 6.dxe4 Bb7 7.Qe2 c5?! [7...Ba6;
7...Nc6 are the book moves.] 8.Bg2 Be7 9.0-0 0-0 10.e5 Nfd7 11.Rd1 Qc7 Definitely black is worse here 12.b3 [12.Nc4! is annoying. I intended 12...Bd5 (12...Nc6 13.Nd6) but had not seen that 13.Rxd5!! exd5 14.Ne3 wins eg 14...d4 15.Nd5 Qd8 16.e6 Nc6 17.Nxe7+ Qxe7 18.Ng5] 12...Rd8 13.Bb2 Nc6 14.c4 Nf8 15.h4 Rd7 16.Ne4 Rad8 17.h5 Nb4 18.Rxd7 Qxd7? 19.a3? [Not sure why, apart from getting short of time I didn't play 34...Bxd4 which should win.] 35.Bb2 draw offered 35...Nf7 36.Bf3 f5 draw agreed, I do have winning chances now but was down to about five minutes vs eight. 1/2-1/12

I was especially motivated for this tournament for the obvious reason and especially as Devonport club had obtained such a fine perpetual trophy!

With all the stuff that looks like this at the top of the game:

[Event "Tas Rapid Ch 2015"] [Site ""] [Date "2015.7.25"] [Round "1"] [White "James Peirce"] [Black "William Rumley"] [TimeControl "-"] [Result "1-0"] [ECO "oft"] [WhiteELO "1696"] [BlackELO "1086"]

... put the opening PGN tag after that stuff and before the first move. If the headers are inside the tags the game viewer won't work.

So for instance:

[Event "Tas Rapid Ch 2015"] [Site ""] [Date "2015.7.26"] [Round "7"] [White "James Peirce"] [Black "David Hughes "] [TimeControl "-"] [Result "1/2-1/2"] [ECO "oft"] [WhiteELO "1696"] [BlackELO "1672"] 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.Nc3 Nxd5 4.Bc4 Nxc3 5.bxc3 Bf5 6.d4 e6 7.Nf3 Nd7 8.a4 c6 9.O-O Bd6 10.Bd3 O-O 11.Bxf5 exf5 12.Ba3 Bxa3 13.Rxa3 Re8 14.Re1 Qc7 15.c4 Rad8 16.Rae3 Rxe3 17.Rxe3 Nf6 18.Qe2 h6 19.h3 Ne4 20.Nd2 Rxd4 21.Nxe4 Rxe4 22.Rxe4 fxe4 23.Qxe4 Qd7 24.Qe3 b6 25.a5 bxa5 26.Qc5 Qc7 27.Kf1 Qb6 28.Qf5 a4 29.Qc8+ 1/2-1/2

doesn't play, but ...

Note especially Bonham - Hughes. At 5:10 in the video I am robbed of six seconds when I press the clock and my time keeps going. At about 7:50 I knock over numerous pieces but David (who has heaps of time) does not press back which would have forced me to fix them on my own time and flagged me. In the process I accidentally replace the pawn on g3 to g3.7 and then later push it to g5 (a claimable illegal move which would have made the game a draw). On Sunday I was worried that I had claimed David's illegal move before he pressed his clock (which would not be a valid claim) but the video shows that my clock was running and that I finished saying "illegal move" before it fell.

For me games with headers in load but when I press play they do not play. Might be a browser/other software thing.

Big thanks to Ian for another amazing effort in putting this archive together - and to all the Hobart players who were so generous in their support of these events. Of course, Kevin, there's an easy way to ease your boredom with the KIA: Stop playing 1. ....e6 .....

That would be like stopping breathing!

As far as I'm aware I've never played anything but 1...e6 against 1.e4 in any rated classical, blitz or rapid OTB game since 1984. Ian L thought this was a joke when I told him but it is actually true.

I'm going to have to start playing something other than 1.e4 against Kevin just to mix things up!

You're very welcome, I'll try and sort out the malfunctions so the camera doesn't cut out... Not sure why that happened, but 8 out of 9 aint bad

Of course, Kevin, there's an easy way to ease your boredom with the KIA: Stop playing 1. ....e6 .....I was interested to see that this was the same variation played in my game with Denis in the Tas Open (which however went 7...Nc6). Presumably being prepared to go into it again means that Denis thinks he has repaired it.

It's more a case of the KIA being for people who don't think enough about openings, i suspect. I do recall that an early Nf6 would have been better for me in that game than the rubbish i played - just as in this case Nf6 was apparently a winning move. Needless to say i didn't play it in either game .... maybe next time ....

A lot of southpaws in Tassie chess circles, it seems.

I move left-handed but am right-handed. Easier for games when I have to write moves down. I also wear my watch on my right hand despite being right-handed.
