The eligibility criteria is incorrect.

Rating of at least 2150 on December 2015 ACF list; or
Rating of at least 2250 on December 2015 FIDE list; or
Current Australian Champion; or
Winner of the previous Australian Major; or
Current State or Territory Champion; or
Nominee of State or Territory; or
An improving junior of sufficient standard.
All foreign players are subject to approval by the ACF. Foreign players, once approved by the ACF, may win prize money but are ineligible for the title of Australian Champion.
Some criteria is missing and a FIDE rating of 2250 does not apply to Australian citizens or permanent residents.

The website should be changed to show the following criteria:

Automatic Qualification:
An Australian citizen or a person with permanent resident status and has a rating of at least 2150 on December 2015 ACF list; or
Current Australian Champion; or
Current or immediately previous Australian Junior Champion; or
Current or immediately previous Australian Women's Champion; or
Winner of the previous Australian Major; or
Current State or Territory Champion; or

Qualification requiring ACF approval:
An Australian citizen or a person with permanent resident status rated under 2150 on the December 2015 ACF list but is deemed by the ACF Council to be of an equivalent level of proficiency; or
An improving junior who is deemed by the ACF Council to be of sufficient standard; or
A nominee of a State or Territory if that State would not otherwise have a person in the Australian Chess Championship; or
Foreign players who have a rating of at least 2250 on the most recent FIDE rating list and who has played at least 20 ACF-rated games in the past two years

Note Foreign players may win prize money but are ineligible for the title of Australian Champion.

Note Foreign players may win prize money but are ineligible for the title of Australian Champion.

A note should also be added that foreign players not meeting these criteria need to apply to the ACF for permission to play. It has been ACF practice for several years to override the By-Laws to allow a few otherwise ineligible foreign players who are useful to norm objectives (such as foreign GMs) to play.

Hey Garrett, how's it going mate?

Initially, I thought on the same line as yours then reconsidering I realised that:

1) It's a bit unbecoming for the organisers not to have qualification criteria etc on their own website / brochure and

2) You 'd be surprised by the no. of people/potential participants (particularly of mature age groups) who have no idea
about websites, online info etc. I still believe that now as in a few more years to come old style hard copy brochures
should be necessary to get messages across to certain people!

BTW I am not 100% sure but I think I saw an Australian Championship 2016 flyer during the Sydney Oceania Zonal.

Aus Champs By-Laws are here:

http://www.auschess.org.au/constitution/By-law1.txt

It should be noted that the by-laws are typically overridden either to admit specific foreign players or to give the selection committee power to approve any foreign entries it wishes. This is partly because ineligible foreign players are often wanted for norms and partly because 3 (h) in its current form is unworkable since you cannot know til entries have closed whether you might have more than four players covered by 3 (h) wishing to play.

Also rule 5 is customarily used to avoid the bye, although the bye is not at all exceptional.

I am well thanks Elliot.

You raise some good points about the hard copy stuff.

Good luck to MCC with the tourney, we played a couple of rounds of the MCC cup at Fitzroy town hall one year, a nice historic venue ! (and diagonally across from a pub too if I remember rightly).

Cheers Garrett.

For participants, often the difference between a good tournament and a great experience is the non chess playing activities, commentaries, excursions etc.

The MCC has had a long friendship with the iconic Red Triangle in Fitzroy (http://2016.chesschampionship.org.au/category/news/), which is continuing into the Australian Championship with a pool tournament after the blitz.

I think you are being mislead by ACF ratings. It is much better to use FIDE for comparison purposes. In the current field there are 8 people with Fide ratings 2400+. In each 2014 and 2012 championships there were 7 players with Fide ratings 2400+. Taking into account rating inflation, I would say even if the field is stronger, certainly not by far.

Accurate about the 8 over 2400, but also 3 IM's 2390+ playing, so very close to 11 2400's. Also worth noting participants like Brodie McClymont, Ari Dale who have both performed well over 2400 at times.
Meanwhile in 2014 the 8th seed was 2370 but still a strong IM.
Also I'm not sure if inflation really has an effect over a 2-4 year period, all the juniors in the Champs have improved dramatically since 2014,

Seems the 2012 event was stronger in the top 10 than 2014

Kevin Bonham is on the entry list with no rating next to his name, indicating newbie status. But I have a feeling that that status may be an illusion and that maybe he's been around the traps for an odd decade or few, played a few games over that time and some distant memory that he may have posted on Chesschat here and there on the odd occasion over that time :).

Rather strong, don't you think?

Besides working, playing in the Masters, and volunteering for the MCC, promoting Australian chess through my blog and social media, I agreed to change the ratings on the site. I learned how to do this earlier this week and while have been rather busy with other things, I apologise nevertheless for my tardiness.

I am having to update each rating manually which is very time consuming. I managed all the Championship entries tonight after my game, and will hopefully have all ACF ratings updated before Christmas Day.

No, he was accepted under rule 3g:

a junior (according to FIDE definition) who is improving and is deemed by
the ACF Council to be of sufficient standard;

Being a State Junior Champion does not allow for automatic entry. Being the Australian Junior Champion (open U18 - not girls) does.

The by-laws are here:

http://www.auschess.org.au/constitution/By-law1.txt

but ignore 3(h) since it's impractically worded and the ACF tends in practice to override it and just let the selectors decide about overseas entrants.

Perhaps, I remember Malcolm Pyke asked when the decision was to be made on the fringe players, and the deadline was at least a week ago. So I would of assumed that the field would be set, but I did see some withdrawals. I assume that is what is holding up the pairings?

Perhaps, I remember Malcolm Pyke asked when the decision was to be made on the fringe players, and the deadline was at least a week ago.

They were all ruled on some time ago (some were accepted, some were rejected and David Hacche was nominated as the bye-reserve.

So I would of assumed that the field would be set, but I did see some withdrawals. I assume that is what is holding up the pairings?

Possibly the organisers are avoiding releasing pairings until quite close to the start just in case somebody else withdraws. Also I am not sure at what time the draw for colours for the top board is conducted.

2 years ago at Springvale with 2 rounds to go there were 16 players who had a chance to win. This year the tail seems quite strong so its going to be a very tough tournament.

No. A title only counts for norms once awarded and shown on a player profile. I have sent the application but it will be about 3 months before it is processed.

What a drama! How can we wait for this to be fixed or ignore...we've got to complain. Time for me to make some spelling mistakes to distract Jammo from the Aus Champs thread. This way, Altecman will be able to do his job in peace while old people will also have something to keep themselves busy with...

There is no live commentary online, just the games. I heard that there will be live commentary at the venue at some point from IM West

Also, if Jack Puccini finds his form - he can have the greatest rating gain of all :)

Another great prediction. He couldn't even beat an old man in round one. If you are looking for the greatest rating gain then look no further than Hacche! He is coming off such a low base....

ACF have made some clarifications for the eligibility to rating prizes for the Reserves. I have updated the website with the updated rules:

http://2016.chesschampionship.org.au/info/prizes/

Originally we had used MCC club policy rules which is different to ACF rules. As it is an official ACF event we should be using the ACF rules. My apologies for this change late in the proceedings.

This will only effect players without an ACF rating.

Another great prediction. He couldn't even beat an old man in round one. If you are looking for the greatest rating gain then look no further than Hacche! He is coming off such a low base....

Not as good as his IM norm tournament prediction, his winner prediction actually came last in the tournament.

That's a failed Swiss Gambit right there, ouch!

(not implying any deliberate actions in drawing round one of course, just that they might have hoped for an easier round two as a result)

That's a failed Swiss Gambit right there, ouch!

I was surprised Justin agree to a draw. Final position in his game against Loh appears to be slightly better for black. He could have played on and try to squizz a win out of it

I was watching Papin-Brown (and surprised to be the only spectator) in the leadup to the time control and they were both pretty much increment-surfing for a few moves in that very complex position.

A great result for Karl to draw with Max. I doubt there was any Swiss Gambit involved.

Board 8 is down (Illingworth-Loh), one of the old ACF boards. Please note that the game is still in progress, but the board cannot be fixed.

Excellent position for Li vs Johansen it was....then he played 20.0-0-0 for some reason castling his king right under the fire of black pieces. Very strange play...
P.S. editing the post now..it may be that white calculated it all and found some forced line leading to win that justifies such risk taking. My point is...there were many safer ways to play as black king was in trouble anyway. However, if it is deep calculation by Li - well done!

Andrew and Max both had elusive winning shots

...

I'm sure Andrew would have seen that, it's not the sort of thing he misses. More likely in the time available he couldn't assess the position after winning the Q for three pieces and thought the game move better.

For the remainder of the tournament, Board 8 will not be broadcasted unless the board fixes. I apologize, but it is a hardware issue with the old ACF Boards, sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't. There will still be 7 live games, which is enough to watch the top action.

no need to apologize Phil, you are doing a fine job and we all should thank you for the excellent service!

Zach Loh defeats Max Illingworth!

Is that real or are the moves a board malfunction?

Is that real or are the moves a board malfunction?

Hi Mishahu. I suggest that's real. Altecman is in charge of the DGT transmission service and has direct contact with the games! Happy New Year to all in Sydney and at Norths in particular!
I will be visiting sometime during 2016!

no need to apologize Phil, you are doing a fine job and we all should thank you for the excellent service!

Thanks Elliot, just disappointing when things don't work. I did expect difficulties, as those boards are likely as old as I am.

More good news for MCC clubbers - Dale has massive advantage in the endgame against Ikeda so if he does not let it slip - will be 0-1. Good turnaround after white was pressing for most of the game!

Shell shocked?

''Games of the day'' today are: Puccini-Solomon and Cheng-Smirnov. Also lets see if Morris and Izzat will have a quick draw or not.

Cheng v Smirnov What appeared to be a lovely tactic by Cheng 11 Qb3 Kh8 12 Nb5 was countered with Qc8!!. If 13 Nf7 Rxf7 14 Qxf7 Be6 14 Qxe7 Bf8 trapping the white Queen, I think. If 14 Bg4 then f5 refutes the attempt to pin Black's bishop. Instead of checking with the Knight, Cheng took the f pawn and Smirnov seems to have wriggled out of it, though the king is a bit exposed.

Wow, our newly minted GM is having a shocker!

Hi Pax let me bring to your attention that Dusan Stojic an ex Vic Champion
and a many strong tournaments winner, wasn't exactly born yesterday! :) :P

And Vasily Papin is not the first GM who has succumbed to
the Karl Zelesko power!

Particularly, when Z's first chess teacher was there to watch him today along with his mum! :)

Wow, our newly minted GM is having a shocker!

It is a tough field. Unlike in Open events, poor start does not guarantee weak opposition.

Let me add that Dusan has also been Vic Open champion twice.
Shared title with James Morris and Bobby Cheng in 2012
and in 2006 with David Smerdon!
He is 27 y.o.

Another great prediction. He couldn't even beat an old man in round one. If you are looking for the greatest rating gain then look no further than Hacche! He is coming off such a low base....

Great to see that Hacche is playing so well (as I predicted!) that next round he is paired against the Australian Champion!

Hi Pax let me bring to your attention that Dusan Stojic an ex Vic Champion
and a many strong tournaments winner, wasn't exactly born yesterday! :) :P

Oh Dusan is no muppet, but I was commenting more on the cumulative effect of the first four rounds rather than any one game. Max was the clear favorite at the start of the event, in my opinion.

Kanan Izzat follows up his Australasian Masters victory with a 4/4 start to take the Championship lead.

Really enjoyed Solomon's endgame (http://gorkachc.blogspot.com.au/2016/01/australian-championship-clear-leader.html) from round 1.

Solo tried to ''repeat the trick'' in rd4 against Puccini playing a dead-drawn endgame for win...and even making some progress. Eventually Jack drew though.

Pleasing to see Karl Zelesco doing well- another of the 2014 Al Ain experience brigade. Hoping Max can recover from a horror run. As has been pointed out, there are no easy games in that field.

hi prez the above link leads to a no no place according to my defense system.

BTW which room are you presenting the analysis in?
I am sure there was some announcement made at some stage,
however, me being true to my coming-late-to-the-venue form
I must have missed it.
Cheers!!!

Commentary is in the Reading Room - there are signs directing spectators to it at the venue. I believe today is IM Guy West on commentary duty.

For those who are interested, Guy's commentary today starts at 2:30 pm or thereabouts (might be a tiny bit earlier, not later). He's also commentating on the 7th and 11th.

Thanks to who-ever is posting the games to chess-results :)

Dusan beating Max was definitely one for M. to forget. Pawn pinching Harry, and then getting Queen pinned on move 19.
In Ikeda - Loh, both player had strong positions, and Junta must be kicking himself. 54. Bc8 seems pretty obvious. :hmm:

My favourite is Kanan. He was world junior champion some years ago. ''Unfortunately'' and has a habbit of reading non-chess books, studying foreign languages etc. and it did slow down his chess development but it is amazing how he is capable of competing successfully against those who do nothing in their lives but shift wooden pieces :). If Kanan becomes a GM (and given his age (he is still in U20 age group) and progress it is just a matter of time) this will be an outstanding achievement as he is not a chess professional!

Any chance Kanan will become an Australian in the future? He could become Australia's 4th active GM!

Thanks to who-ever is posting the games to chess-results :)

That would be me. Putting games from Championship into computer as they finish, copying over DGT games at the end of the day's play & then uploading the PGN file to chess-results of an evening (priority being results & pairings obviously).

Unfortunately a lack of manpower means that at the moment the same is not happening with the games from the Reserves, though if anyone is able to input some games, it would be greatly appreciated!

A very nice endgame position in Anton-Jack game. The beauty is that neither computers nor kids understand it well. :) Looks to me like exchanging the black bishop for a knight is winning. 5 years ago I was teaching three talented NSW juniors Anton, Pengyu and Andrew Pan this endgame.

P.S. I have also taught Anton how to play for a win in rook endgames with 4 against 3. The first round was a bit of a disaster.:)

Something strange happening in Jason-Darryl game. White did not take h6 pawn twice! Maybe the position is not correctly transmitted.

Did Bobby hara-kiri? Ke7 - Kd8 the worst possible choice of squares...

Something strange happened, and the board lost the position, and I can't bother the players to get their scoresheets :D

Why didn't he just advance the king towards the black rook?

Did Bobby hara-kiri? Ke7 - Kd8 the worst possible choice of squares...

I am trying to follow games from work (tough task while students are in class listening to my lecture :)) but when I was having a quick glance at Cheng-Izzat (they swapped into rook endgame at that point) I thought white was either winning or having very good winning chances.

No; they will have an internal rating (if they have previous games) or at least a performance rating and in either case the Glicko system treats games played against unrateds as if they were played against players with that internal/performance rating, but places less weight on them than normal. It is completely different from the FIDE system in this way.

Posts moved

Posts in the having-a-life-outside-chess discussion moved to a new thread http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?16244-Having-not-having-quot-a-life-outside-chess-quot-(sf-2016-Aus-Champs) as some posters may want to engage with them without sidetracking this thread. Original post was partly on topic but has been moved anyway. (If you have two largely different things to say you can always say them in two posts!)

That's rather unfortunate for me as I beat someone 300 points higher than me and drew with someone 400 points higher than me. Both of which won't mean much for ACF which is the main rating I pay attention to. So far 3/5 of my games won't get ACF rated and I'm so pleased with my results so far. Never mind, nothing can be done, just the way it works out I guess

Wait, I misread your post, it looks like those games will actually have an effect on my rating which is good for me

Oh, there's something else I forgot to mention! If they have a FIDE rating but no previous ACF games at all, their FIDE rating is treated as an ACF rating (I think with a high uncertainty level). Sorry for forgetting to say that bit first, playing chess badly has damaged my brain!

Don't want to call it too early, but what's the requirements for Karl and Luke to get IM norms?

Don't want to call it too early, but what's the requirements for Karl and Luke to get IM norms?

IIRC Luke has more than sufficient IM norms already and just needs to get his rating up. For Karl (EDIT: and Luke) because it is a national championships he doesn't need to worry about the number of opponent federations and so on, he just needs a 2500+ performance (by the FIDE crude batching method) from his first 9, 10 or 11 games, or from any 9 or 10 games after dropping one or two wins from the list. He has already played sufficient titled players.

Don't want to call it too early, but what's the requirements for Karl and Luke to get IM norms?

Perhaps a little early to call, but general requirements are:
IM performance is ≥ 2450 performance against opponents with average rating ≥ 2230.
At least 50% of the opponents shall be title-holders (TH) as in 0.31, excluding CM and WCM.
For an IM norm, at least 1/3 with a minimum 3 of the opponents (MO) must be IMs or GMs.

They've both played enough IMs & titled players, so its just down to the rating performance. At present they're both well in front of the required mark, but still a long way to go in the tournament!

Solo's reward for a tough run (1 from the last 4) is black vs the top seed!

Solo tried valiantly to pull off another Soloswindle with Q for Q+2P vs Wallis yesterday but Wallis finally snuffed it out and won in 110 or so moves.

I thought he had lots but perhaps I'm confusing him with someone else from NZ who had a large collection while being sub-2400. He has 2013 and 2014 Doeberl. I can't find evidence of any others.

Only IM norm that Luke Li (FIDE ID 4303431, NZL) has is from 2014 Doeberl. At least that is what is on FIDE's records albeit without copies of any certificates.
NZCF has not received any IT1 norm forms from any tournament Luke has played in (not even the 2014 Doeberl that is published by FIDE). He had not earned any norms from NZ tournaments in the past.
Does Luke have a stack of norm certificates filed away somewhere???

Only IM norm that Luke Li (FIDE ID 4303431, NZL) has is from 2014 Doeberl. At least that is what is on FIDE's records albeit without copies of any certificates.
NZCF has not received any IT1 norm forms from any tournament Luke has played in (not even the 2014 Doeberl that is published by FIDE). He had not earned any norms from NZ tournaments in the past.
Does Luke have a stack of norm certificates filed away somewhere???

It seems like he only has the two norms. But it is not unusual for post-2005 norms to be unregistered and hence not showing on the FIDE site.

Hey Kevin, do you have an estimate for the current requirements for IM norms after Rd 6?

Hey Kevin, do you have an estimate for the current requirements for IM norms after Rd 6?

I have a feeling Zelesco is very close to scoring one!

Hey Kevin, do you have an estimate for the current requirements for IM norms after Rd 6?

I have it that Karl gets an IM norm after round 9 if his round 8 and 9 opponents have average ratings of at least 2329, even if he now goes 0/3.
For 0.5/3, round 8+9 opponents only need to average 2161.
For 1/3, certain norm.

Luke's average opponent rating through round 7 I have as 2343, which means he's on track for needing about 6/9 (ie 2/3 from here) for a round 9 norm though that may change depending on who he plays in the last 2 rounds. If he is close but not quite there after round 9 he could get one after 10 or 11 by dropping his round 1 win.

I'm very tired - please treat these as unconfirmed!

The Queenslander Brodie Will ✋ Him and he will bring the Title to Qld!!! I might be just a little biased, may the best player win.

I don't remember seeing kanan losing to brodie. They haven't played many classical time tournaments together. Can you provide the tournament that this result occurred? Just so we know it's not made up.

Somewhat surprisingly, Izzat has played only two players rated over 2350, while Zelesco has played only one player rated under 2350. That will still be the case after the next round, of course.

I don't remember seeing kanan losing to brodie. They haven't played many classical time tournaments together. Can you provide the tournament that this result occurred? Just so we know it's not made up.

I can vaguely remember a tournament in QLD where both players participated.
Brodie won the tournament after a solid performance but I don't think he beat Kanan.
I stand to be corrected if I am wrong but of what I can recall their encounter ended in a draw!

I thought it was the 2014 Gold Coast Open where both participated and Brodie Won the tournament,I checked the Crosstable and they didn't meet.

Will anyone stop Kanan Izzat, and who will become Champion? (http://gorkachc.blogspot.com.au/2016/01/who-will-be-australian-champion.html)
I hope Karl does today! He is having a cracker. Kanan of course is having a super cracker. Go Karl!
