The club maths expert has done some calculations If we have 36 players then at least one in three persons will win a cash prize!!! As prizes will be split if necessary the one in three gets better and better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have 30 players who have so far expressed interest in attending and there is still 12 days to go!!

Congrats to STEPHEN SOLOMON, CAQ QLD OPEN CHAMPION ONCE AGAIN! Stephen commented in his victory speech at the prize giving that in his crucial encounters with both Brodie McClymont and Gene Nakauchi his opening preparation paid off quite well. He followed the Ruy Lopez line played by Moulthun Ly against Brodie recently and was happy with his position out of the opening. I think Brodie was likewise happy with the White side and the game ended in a well played draw. Stephen also got a position he had prepared for Igor Bjelobrk against Gene and this paid handsome dividends. Stephen played a strong endgame against Mike Duffin's French in R6 to take the lead. Brodie was trying desperately to catch him as Black against Gene in a g3 King's Indian but when Gene sacrificed a Rook to open lines up against Brodie's King, a withering attack was unleashed and Gene went on to win a very exciting game, similar in some ways to Aronian's fine win with a rook sacrifice in Round 1 of the 2015 Sinquefield Cup against Caruana. Check TWIC for this fine game. The tournament was fun to play in and full of hard fought games, and upsets were always on the cards. Tim Harris had a fine tournament and his upset win over Roy Seabrook in R6 got him to 5 out of 6 and equal second place with Gene Nakauchi! Tim has now won a place in the 2015 Queensland Chess Championships as the best scoring local player in his region. Josh Morris finished with an upset win over Renato Remaneses. Bryce Rosser (981) upset Tony Weller (1660) in Round 1 as did Hikaru Oka (940) with his win in Round 1 over Mike Canfell (1642). The whole Oka family played well and Itsuki and Tsukasa also took home prizemoney! The tournament was very well run by Bundaberg Chess Club and every player was made to feel most welcome by President Dr Martin Carter! Allan Menham did another excellent job directing this event and all rounds started on time! I am already looking forward to the 2016 event in Bundaberg in the last weekend of August next year!

Arbiter’s Report Queensland Open 22/22 August 2015

Held at Thabeban State School Bundaberg

The Queensland Open is one of the premier chess events in Queensland and was held at Thabeban School on 22/23 August 2015. Thirty seven players competed made up of 21 Senior Players and 16 Junior Players. IM Stephen Solomon, IM Brodie McClymont and FM Gene Nakauchi were among the competitors.

The first round commenced at 11.30 am after the official opening of the Tournament by the Mayor of Bundaberg Cr Mal Foreman.

There were two major upsets in the first round. Bryce Rosser (981) defeated Tony Weller (1660) and Hikaru Oka (940) defeated Mike Canfell (1642). The game between Bryce and Tony was one of the last to finish.

Round Two commenced at 2.30 pm. There was only one major upset when Keith McLeod (1448) defeated Mike Duffin (1914). Phil Mulholland (1238) and Keanu Matsuura (599) fought down to a great end game but Phil’s greater experience gained him the win!! Keanu played exceptionally well for his age.

Round Three commenced at 5 pm. Brodie McClymont (2428) had a great end game win against Roy Seabrook (1703). Bryce Rosser (981) gained a draw against Maris Cekulis (1487). Keith McLeod (1448) had a draw against Tony Weller (1660). The game between Mark Stokes (1558) and Thomas Uluahannan (1217) went down to the wire and Mark won on time!! It was the last game to finish in this round.

A Lightning Tournament was played on the Saturday Night over eight rounds. There were eighteen competitors. First was Stephen Solomon, second was Gene Nakauchi, third was Alexander Stahnke and fourth was Brodie McClymont.

Round four commenced on the Sunday morning at 8.45 am. At this stage there were four players with three games each so competition was hotting up.

Brodie McClymont (2428) in an end game had a King Bishop and three Pawns against Alex Stahnke (1972) with a King Bishop and one pawn and Brodie won. The game between Stephen Solomon (2391) and Gene Nakauchi (2244) went down to the wire and Stephen won on time.

Round five commenced at 11.15 am. At this stage only two players had won four games each, namely Brodie and Stephen, so they had been drawn to play each other. However there were nine players with three games out of four so it was still anyones tournament!!. Brodie and Stephen ended up agreeing to a draw after a long drawn out end game!!

Upsets in round five were John Harris (1631) drawing with Alexander Stahnke (1972), Thomas Ulahannan (1217) winning against Michael Ostapenko (1407) and Itsuki Oka (143) defeating Adheesha Suraweera (577) .

The final round six commenced at 1.45 pm. Brodie and Stephen had both won 4.5 games each and there were four players on four games each. So this round was going to be very interesting!!

Gene Nakauchi (2244) played against Brodie McClymont (2428) and Gene won. Stephen Solomon (2391) played Mike Duffin (1914) and Stephen won.

There were many major upsets in this final round. Timothy Harris (1575) has a win against Roy Seabrook (1703) Tony Weller (1660) had a win against Alexander Stahnke (1972). Joshua Morris (1300) had a win against Renato Remaneses (1617).Mark Cervenjak (1344) had a win against Don Hamilton (1527). Keanu Matsuura (599) had a draw against Brian Marinovic (1503). And one of the biggest upsets was when Itsuki Oka (143) won a game against Phil Mulholland (1238). Persons who watch the end game between Itsuki and Phil all said “The kid is good!!”)

So at the end of round six, Stephen Solomon had gained 5.5 wins and won the Queensland Open Trophy and the Bundaberg Weekender Trophy. Gene Nakauchi and Timothy Harris gained five games each and shared the second and third prize money. Timothy also was awarded the Richard Good Memorial Trophy for the top Junior Player of the tournament. Timothy is going to be one to watch in future years. He has received great coaching from his father who is a former Queensland Champion.

In rating group one (over 1550), Tony Weller and Brodie McClymont shared first prize and second prize. Third prize was shared between Mike Duffin, Roy Seabrook, Mark Stokes, and John Harris.

In rating group two (1000-1549), Mark Cervenjak and Joshua Morris shared first and second prize. Alex Au gained third prize.

In rating group three (under 1000), the Oka family gained the first three places. That was Hikaru (first) , Tsukasa (second) and Itsuki (third). Well done Oka family!!. We are going to hear a lot more about these three players in future years.

The Club was pleased to have one of our sponsors Leanne Donaldson M P as an official guest to present the trophies and prize money.

It was a great weekend of chess. Some of the Junior players played way above their ACF ratings and will no doubt gain many points the next time the ratings come out. The venue was excellent with food available at the adjacent service station 24/7. Being able to have a DGT board showing the game on board one on a large display screen in the hall is always great!! Toilets were adjacent to the school hall which is always a big plus. Free tea, coffee, biscuits, and cake were supplied by the Club to players and onlookers and available all weekend!!

By using an Optus USB stick, details of the round draws and the results were able to be up on chess chat within minutes. As a matter of interest, at 10 pm on the Saturday night, the site had been viewed 1405 times. At 6 pm on the Sunday night, the site had been viewed 1816 times rising to 1880 times by 8 pm. Early Monday morning it had increased to 2010 times!! Chess Chat is obviously used by the chess fraternity to keep up to date on tournaments and other chess matters!!

The next Bundaberg Open will be held on the fourth weekend in August 2016 so mark your diaries now!!!

I just checked. There is no 2011 winner on it!! Give me your name and I will refer it to the CAQ and get your name on the trophy. At what venue was it won?

According to the flier on the CAQ website, the Qld Open 2011 was to be held at the Sherwood Community Centre.

http://www.caq.org.au/htm/2011/2011QueenslandOpen.pdf

The results are also published on the CAQ website

http://www.caq.org.au/htm/Results/2011/QldOpen/2011QldOpen.html

George was reported as the winner on the CAQ website, the ACF newsletter and the FIDE ratings report for the tournament, so I don't think he is trying to pull a swifty. :)

Slightly odd factoid is the field was small and so the tournament appears to have been held as a round robin. Not too many Open round robins going around.

Congrats Solo and, belatedly, Garrett.

Garrett also won in 2008.

The reason his 2011 win isn't recorded is that the trophy disappeared between 2010 and 2012. When it resurfaced (Graeme Gardiner had it, although nobody, including Graeme, has been able to determine why), it was updated with the 2012 winners but 2011 was overlooked. I'm not sure why Garrett wasn't added in 2011, but then I don't know where the trophy disappeared to either - a case for the X-Files (possibly)!

Congratulations to Stephen and (twice) to Garrett - that was a good win in 2011.
