It was a fun tournament to play in a great venue, the CQ UNIVERSITY. Tristan Stevens deservedly won the event - his games were full of interest. Tom Maguire gave Tristan a tough battle and Tristan showed us a clever endgame tactic that would have won for Tom. Tom would have needed to put his rook en prise, but in so doing would have then queened a pawn! But a draw was a fitting result. John Harris also played a good game in Round 6, but Tristan proved a little bit too strong in a long battle.
The organization was great, the food was in abundance and Allan Menham did a top job as Director of Play.
Well done GLADSTONE CHESS CLUB - I am already looking forward to the GLADSTONE OPEN of 2016!

Hey Elliott. One shortcut is to paste the file into SCID vs PC and the copy the game again. It takes the input entered by StokesyRedcliff

1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 e6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 a6 5 Bd3 Bc5 6 Nb3 Ba7 7 Qg4 Nf6 8 Qg3 d6 9 c4 Nc6 10. Nc3 Ne5 11 Be2 h5 12 Bg5 Bd7

Hi All,

A big thankyou to everybody who attended the tournament. Like I said at the end, for me it's very special being able to see people at tournaments where even though significant time has passed everyone is brought together again by a common love for the game.

The club is always thankful for those who are prepared to travel long distances to join us for the tournament and again we were fortunate to host many players from out of town.

We're also extremely grateful for the support we receive from our sponsors. CQU who donate the venue, not just for the tournament, but for weekly Club meetings; The Gladstone Regional Council, who have supported us year after year; Gardiner Chess who continue to support the club and chess in regional Queensland.

Lastly, but by no means least, I'd like to tank the organising committee - Julie Withoos, Jill XXX, Heather Stevens, Hayley Ridden, Sanath Alahakoon and Heather Richards. You are all marvels and on behalf of all club members and tournament participants, thankyou!.

I look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Tristan

Gladstone Open 2015 not Queensland Open 2015 (sorry for the typo!!)

Arbiter’s Report

This great event was conducted on 25/26 July in Gladstone. It was a great venue where the tournament was held. There were two wall display boards in the tournament room which allowed a DGT board to display the games on board one. Also the draw and results of each round were displayed on the second display board. Toilets were close to the tournament room which is also an added advantage. Gladstone Club supplied lunch and dinner on the Saturday and lunch on Sunday for a very nominal charge. There was plenty of space in the tournament room which allowed the tables to be set up well apart.

Round one commenced on time. The only upset in this round was when Louis Willemse (800) defeated Mark Stokes (1558). It was the last game to finish. Louie said he had not played in a tournament for forty or so years so this was a great effort!! Young Bryce Rosser (981) played a great game against Tony Weller (1660) and it was the third last game to finish. He nearly defeated Tony but experience told and Tony ended up winning the game!! Tony said Bryce played very strongly.

Round two commenced on time. Aaron Fahey (1299) had a win against John Harris (1631). Keanu Matsuura (599) had a win against Ron Kypers (1108). The last game to finish was the game between Martin Carter (939) and Mark Stokes (1558). Mark won but it was a great battle!!

Round three started on time. Six players started this round with 2 games each. Louis Willemse (800) defeated Keith McLeod (1448) with a beautiful Knight check!! The last game to finish was Renato Remaneses (1617) who lost in a very exciting game with Tristan Stevens (2166). Kyle Stevens (1310) had a draw with Keanu Matsuura (599).

Round four on the Sunday morning commenced on time. Mark Stokes was there very early which was, to say the least, a bit unusual!! At the start of the round, three players had three games each so the competition was starting to hot up. The two top rated players Tristan Stevens (2166) and Gene Nakauchi (2244) played each other. This was to be one of the major tournament upsets as Tristan won in a great end game. The games on the four top boards all lasted over two hours. Tony Weller (1660) had a draw with Tom Maguire (1958). Keanu Matsuura (599) had a draw with Louis Willemse (800). Bryce Rosser (981) had a win against Aish Chandrasekara (1208)

Round five started on time. Tristan Stevens was now in the lead with 4 games. Tom Maguire was only half a point behind so anything could happen. Tom Maguire (1958) had a draw with Tristan Stevens (2166). Timothy Harris (1575) had a draw with his father John Harris (1631). This was a great effort by Timothy as John is a former Queensland Champion. Patrick Harris (1037) had a draw with Don Hamilton (1527). In the end game Don had a Knight and a King against Patrick with a King and three pawns. The end game was very hard fought!! Uvindu Bandara (400) had a win against Kithmini Alahakoon (589)

Round six started on time. Tristan Stevens (2166) had a win against John Harris (1631) which made Tristan the winner of the tournament with 5.5 games. Tony Weller (1660) had a draw with Timothy Harris (1575). In the end game Tony had a King, Rook and Pawn against Tim with a King and Rook. Tim played a hard end game to get the draw. Aaron Fahey (1299) had a win against Mark Stokes (1558). Keanu Matsuura (599) had a win against Bryce Rosser (981).

So the final standings were Tristan Stevens 5.5 games, Gene Nakauchi 5 games, and Tom Maguire with 4 games. Five players won 4 games but Tom was third place on countback.

It was a great tournament and many of the Junior Players played great games. A special Arbiter prize was awarded to Keanu Matsuura for an outstanding performance!!. He was the second youngest player in the tournament and gained two wins and two draws against higher rated players, and came 12th out of 24 players. He is going to be one to watch in the next few years!!

By using an Optus USB stick, details of the draws and results for each round were up on chess chat within minutes. This enabled interested persons from all over Australia to follow the tournament progress!! This is a big plus for any tournament.

The Queensland Open is on 22/23 August and many of the players in the Gladstone Open will be playing in that tournament. At this early stage 20 players have indicated they will be attending and with the excellent prize money allocated for the tournament many more will be competing!!!

The Queensland Open is at the Thabeban School and food is available 24/7 at the service station next to the school.

One doesn't normally call beating someone <100 higher "one of the major tournament upsets".

I thought they all would have had 6 games, and the above are the points scored from those games.
