I'm playing. I don't have too much of an idea who else is at this stage though a small number of obvious suspects can be determined.

From Devonport, Denis, Patrick and Felix playing in the Open; probably James Peirce, Denis and Felix playing in the Lightning. David Hughes is unable to make either event.
From Burnie, Russell and Fred probably not playing;Dylan and Nigel and Ian are apparently definites. Paul Lovric and Peter Lucas are maybes (according to Dylan). Not sure about Reg and the others.

Tasmanian Lightning

Congrats to Denis McMahon (he's on the couch about 3 m from me at the moment) who is the outright Tas Lightning champion. It's his second title after tying for first with me in 2011.

This year's event started with an upset with Dylan Kuzmic flagging top seed Joshua Loh by three seconds in an otherwise dead lost position. McMahon took the lead in round 4 with a pretty easy win over Bonham after getting strong play with a fianchetto against a central pawn; with the pawn likely to be lost Bonham dropped a piece with an unsound attempt to complicate and then blundered another one. Denis stretched his lead when Bonham and Loh drew - Loh won a piece in the ending but was unable to avoid a pawn race after which Bonham held with Q vs Q+N.

Although Denis was beaten by Joshua in round 7 he held his lead over the final rounds while Bonham had the advantage of three consecutive dodgy Swiss Perfect pairings. In the final round Denis offered Felix Ellis a draw while Ellis was a piece up but severely short of time, but it was declined.

All the board 1 games were filmed.

I must agree. White should not have gone for IQP position and put his pieces off-side on the K-side after swapping all but one pair of minor pieces. It seemed a rather desperate gamble that happened to pay off.

Ian Little put up a good fight against Joshua before hanging a rook with a drawn endgame otherwise approaching. I was worse for much of the game against Ian Rout but then missed a win. Alas for Joshua he has to miss the last round through work commitments.

I thought I'd play a quieter line today in view of Ian's dangerous attacking style but played badly and got skittled anyway.

Ian Little and Reg Harvey shared the U1750 prize as well as third and the U1500 cascaded down to John O'Mara. Ian (1465) performed at 1929, despite being beaten in about 13 moves in an Evans Gambit by McMahon in the first round!
