World Team Championships are taking place right now for both Men (Armenia) are Women (China).
The main highlight so far is Russia's Men's team coming equal last after rd 3...

So this is basically a mini-Olympiad minus the pesky bunny teams but with a strange (geographic?) qualifying system, and held at the same time as a major international tournament (Gashimov Memorial) to make it as meaningless as possible?

Seems like another one of FIDE's funny any-excuse-for-a-tournament championships.

Russian team continues to ''suffer'' - in fact they are lucky to be on 2 team points after rd4 given that Yakovenko's endgame against China was lost.

Orh And Russia Finall won today - 3.5-0.5 against Hungary at least they won't finish last...in fact can still try to finish 3d overall somehow if lucky

USA could 've been a candidate for wooden spoon honours if it wasn't for Egypt. Ukraine is doing great with three rounds to play. Their match
versus China could be the decider with three rounds to go! Israel with clever board order arrangements is a chance for a prize!

Haha so much for my estimations ...
in latest developments

USA 2.5 - 1.5 Israel
Ukraine 2-2 China
Russia 1.5 - 2.5 Armenia

Any theories on what's happened to Russia? Being without Kramnik may not help but they still have the only all-2700 team (though Ukraine is close).

Yet another example of Russia under-achieving at a team tournament. They failed to win the last seven Olympiads, and didn't even make the podium in three of those.

Russians are not the team players.

China got very lucky last round when they managed to win a match against Cuba that looked like they were losing!

Wei Yi is pretty remarkable, and still only 15! He is actually ahead of Carlsen at a similar age.
