47 players so far plus however many USYD will bring. Looks like a strong and competitive tournament with Yi Liu and Pasan Perera leading Macquarie, Hafiz Shafruddin (~2100) and Joseph Nguyen for UNSW, Charles Zworestine and Trent Parker playing for UWS, while USYD always has a strong team.

Still two weeks to go, hoping for enough teams to run a decent 5 round Swiss tournament (some unis will have multiple six player teams).

58 players so far, still expecting a lot more USYD players. Raymond Song will be playing for UNSW, which looks like a very strong team. Still plenty of time to sign up either by contacting one of the people listed above or myself.

Great to see so many playing, and Raymond back in OTB chess in Sydney after his Chinese adventure.

While a couple of the top players couldn't make it in the end, it was still a very competitive and very close tournament!

There were five teams in the top division. Round 1 saw both games finish in 3-3 draws, with University of Western Sydney (UWS) surprising University of Sydney (USYD) on the top three boards, with Charles Zworestine and Danny Pigram holding Gareth Charles and Julian Kuan to draws, while I (filling in for Clive Ng, who was running late) lost to Sarwat Rewais after missing a clever back rank trick in time pressure. USYD won boards 4 and 5, while UWS won on Board 6. In the other match, Macquarie won the top boards, with Jack Rodgers and Pasan Perera beating Hafiz Shafruddin and Joseprh Nguyen, but University of NSW (UNSW) won on boards 3 and 6 to draw the match.

In Round 2, Macquarie beat UWS 3.5-2.5, despite Charles Zworestine beating Jack Rodgers on the top boards. USYD were heavily favoured on every board against University of Technology Sydney (UTS), but Adam Chan managed to draw a tricky rook endgame with Clive Ng to prevent a clean sweep. The 5.5-0.5 win put USYD in the lead.

After a break for pizza lunch, round 3 saw UWS pull off an upset win over UNSW, despite being outrated on every board. The top three boards were all won by UWS, with Charles Zworestine beating Hafiz Shafruddin, Danny Pigram beating Joseph Nguyen and Sarwat Rewais winning against Nicholas Brown. UNSW recovered on the lower boards, but the 4-2 margin was the biggest between any of the top four teams. In the other match, UTS scored 1.5 points against Macquarie, with Daniel Sleiman winning on Board 5 against Jaimini Ramanthan and Adam Chan scoring his second upset draw in a row, this time against Paul Russell.

In Round 4, UNSW recovered from their previous round loss to beat UTS 6-0, putting them back into contention. Macquarie, with a bye in the last round, needed a big win over USYD to gain a sufficient margin to hold off the chasing teams. Justin Dingley (over Jordan Fotaras) and Paul Russell (against Clive Ng) both scored upset wins, but Jaimini Ramanthan lost to Anthony Lo. The Board 1 game saw Jack Rodgers with R+N+2P vs R+N against Gareth Charles, but with a tricky job to convert. Gareth won one of the pawns and eventually, with both players in time pressure, Jack blundered the exchange. Gareth then spent a while trying to win with R vs N, but gave up after 17 moves, fortunately for the tournament schedule, given the game was already very long before getting to R vs N. The final margin result was Macquarie 3.5-2.5 USYD.

This left a very exciting last round with any of four teams able to win:
1st Macquarie (14.5, but with a bye)
=2nd USYD, UNSW (11, and playing each other)
4th UWS (9.5)
5th UTS (2)

Macquarie would win on tie-break if they were equal with any team, as they had won all their matches except for a draw, while all other teams had lost at least one. So they had to wait nervously and hope that the USYD vs UNSW game was not decided by a margin of 4-2 or greater, and that UWS didn't beat UTS 5.5-0.5 or better.

UWS quickly went to a 4-0 lead against UTS, but the two boards remaining were the two where UTS had scored their points. Meanwhile, all six games were still going on in UNSW vs USYD. Eventually, Erik Ostman put UNSW 1-0 up by winning on Board 6, then on Board 5 Adrian Miranda took advantage of a blunder by Anthony Lo after blundering himself to make the score 2-0. Eric Shi then won on Board 4 for USYD to bring it back to 2-1, while UWS were now 5-0 up. Joseph Nguyen ended USYD's hopes of winning the tournament by winning against Julian Kuan, before Gareth Charles and Clive Ng won to make it 3-3, the result leaving both teams in equal 3rd. The final, decisive, game in the other match was Sarwat Rewais (UWS) against Adam Chan (UTS), who had already drawn with Clive Ng and Paul Russell. Sarwat eventually got the better of Adam to win the tournament for UWS by a single point, with only 1.5 points separating the top four teams.

1st University of Western Sydney 15.5/24
2nd Macquarie University 14.5/24
=3rd Sydney University 14/24 (3rd on tie-break)
=3rd University of NSW 14/24 (4th on tie-break)
5th University of Technology Sydney 2/24

The second division was also very close, with UNSW B winning by half a point ahead of UWS B.

This is the first time that USYD and UNSW have not taken the top two places in one of these tournaments.

I'll post the crosstables later.

Yes, Charles was the second-lowest rated Board 1, but was the highest scorer on that board with 3.5/4. The winners, UWS, were outrated on every board in 3 of their 4 matches (except for Board 3 against Macquarie) so it was a particularly impressive performance.
