View Full Version : Norths Club Championships 10th February-28th April 2015

The Norths Club Championships will be held in Round-Robin divisions on Tuesday nights from February to April. Early entries include IM Max Illingworth, FM Malcolm Stephens and WIM Biljana Dekic.

We are seeking players to make the top division an IM norm event, with IM Anton Smirnov and FM Joost van Ruitenberg also having expressed their interest in playing. If an IM norm tournament, this division would be a 10 player round-robin starting two weeks later (and it is already registered with FIDE). To meet the requirements, we would need:

3 IMs - Illingworth, A. Smirnov (?), ?
3 other titled players - Stephens, van Ruitenberg, Dekic
4 overseas players - van Ruitenberg, ?, ?, Kuan (?)
An average opponent rating of 2230 for anyone who might be seeking a norm.

We are in talks with a number of strong players registered to overseas federations who have played at Norths recently - e.g. Bierkens, Luchtmeijer and Kargosha. Unfortunately IM Richard Jones will be overseas and Barak Atzmon-Simon has changed his registration to Australia (and is unable to play anyway). Any suggestions welcomed, especially if anyone knows anyone visiting Sydney for a couple of months. Note that an IM norm tournament is also a WIM norm tournament, which would require a score of only about 4/9, so one woman registered to an overseas federation would be welcomed even if lower-rated (the lowest rated player can be uplifted to 2050 anyway for the purposes of an IM norm).

The other difficulty, possibly harder to resolve, is the 3rd IM.

Even if not an IM norm event, it is shaping up to be the strongest Club Championships in many years.

Of course there are many divisions and it is a great opportunity for all players to have 9-11 games against opponents of approximately the same strength as themselves.

You can become a member of the club and enter the tournament at http://www.northsydneychess.org/about-us/membership and details (which will be updated to this year's tournament very soon) are at http://www.northsydneychess.org/events/club-championship

Just want to note that I'm registered under an overseas federation (HKG), and I'll be playing in one of the North's Club Championships divisions anyways, so I'm available if you need another overseas player (my rating is on the low side though). In anycase, good job to David and the rest of the Norths committee in getting such a stellar field together!

Thank you Julian, as a regular club member we will certainly include you if possible. By my calculations the average rating of the following field:
Illingworth, A. Smirnov, van Ruitenberg, Stephens, Dekic, Kuan

would be (2476+2412+2327+2261+2060+2050)/6 = 2264, and leave us needing four players, including 1 IM and 2 overseas, with an average rating of approximately 2179 (but slightly higher so it's possible for van Ruitenberg to get a norm).

Tbh for the Championship to be an IM norm event you basically need at least one of Igor or Vlad to play to reach the required rating average. Otherwise, barring the comeback of Xie or Gil, you'd probably need Feldman/Kargosha/Morris/Hu, but that still leaves the field short one overseas player for the norm. Anyway, I hope it works out as NSW could do with a fresh title norm tournament.

PS Hu Xi is another possibility as far as overseas players go.

Please note date change - competition extended one week to allow for 2 postponement nights.

Tournament commences on 10 February and concludes on 5 May (postponements 31 March and 28 April)

Unfortunately we didn't manage to make it an IM norm event - we ended up being one overseas player/one IM short and neither of the two local-based foreign IMs were able to play. A couple of players were only willing to play if it was an IM norm event/strong tournament, so it is a slightly weaker tournament now, but still very strong compared to past years.

Current entry list is below. The players will be divided into divisions of 10-12, with rating order being a guide, but not to be followed in all cases.

Please enter by Saturday midday if you would like to play - we are aiming to do the draw on Sunday.

Details at www.northsydneychess.org/events/club-championship and you can enter when you join the club (www.northsydneychess.org/about-us/membership) or by emailing northsydneychess@gmail.com - note that you must join the club to play in this tournament.

Nicholas Kordahi leads the second division Candidates with 4/4. In Reserves A three players lead on 3.5/4: Nick Cooper, Mark Wilson and Joe Chua. In Reserves D Danny Marcusson has a perfect 5/5; in Reserves E1 Bruno Khodadadi likewise with 4/4.

I calculate Max's live rating to be 2495. Once his rating crosses 2500 (even if it subsequently goes below 2500), he will only require one more norm to become a GM.

Updated results are at http://www.northsydneychess.org/events/club-championship Across all divisions there are 87 players, minus a couple of withdrawals.

IM Max Illingworth (2489) leads with 9/9, having played some games early as he is going overseas before the end of the tournament. Michael Morris (2220) is now in second place with 4.5/6 after beating FM Malcolm Stephens (2261). Morris, who won last year's tournament with 11/11, is the only player with a chance of catching Illingworth. Illingworth's last two games are against Morris and Ton Luchtmeijer (2027).

Max has gained 8.8 rating points from his 9 wins. Wins against Luchtmeijer and Morris would add a further 2.5 points, for a total of 11.3, which given his current rating of 2489 would take him over 2500.

The Candidates is a close battle, with Nicholas Kordahi (1930) leading with 4/6, but Frank Hutchings (1896, 3.5/5) having the highest percentage score. All players have scored between 33 and 70% so far.

Nick Cooper (1766) leads the third division, Reserves A, with 5/6, while Rex Simmonds (1652) has 4.5/5 in Reserves B. In Reserves C, Andrew Johnson (1490) leads with 5/7 and Danny Marcusson (Unr) had 6/6 in Reserves D. The above are 12 player divisions except for Reserves D, which is 10.

Reserves E only has a few games to go and is split into two divisions with a playoff. In E1, Bruno Khodadi (Unr, 4/5) needs a win against Otto Gram (942) to pass Greg Money (1245), who has finished all his games with 4.5/6. E2 looks likely to be decided by the game between Alysha Chin (1206, 4/4, three games remaining) and Dennis Mendigorin (Unr, 5/5, two games remaining).

The Norths Club Championship is now complete. Thank you to Nick Cooper for being the arbiter for this tournament. I am sure all players agree that he did an excellent job.

The Championship was won by Australian Champion and International Master Max Illingworth with a perfect score of 11/11. This result ensured his rating crossed 2500, meaning he needs only one more GM norm for the Grandmaster title. Last year's winner Michael Morris lost only to Max and was in 2nd place with 8.5/11, half a point ahead of FM Malcolm Stephens.

In the Candidates, Australian Girls Champion Kristine Quek certainly justified the club's decision to promote her despite her rating only just qualifying her for Reserves A - she won the division with 7.5/11 and is now eligible to play in the Championship next year. Joshua Behar and Frank Hutchings were equal second with 7/11.

Reserves A saw a tight finish between Joe Chua and Nick Cooper, with Joe beating Nick in the last round to overtake him and win the division with 8/11. Nick was second with 7.5, with Mark Wilson and David Stern equal third on 6.5.

Parunithan Ranganathan was the winner of Reserves B, finishing with 8.5/11, half a point ahead of Rex Simmonds. Luke Marsh, Frank Low, Peter Creek and Ivan Case were all equal third on 7 points.

Reserves C finished in a tie between Norman Greenwood and David Cook on 7.5/11. Norm is the winner of the division by the FIDE-recommended tie-breaks, because he beat David in their individual game. Roger Jeffreys and Anthony Fikh were equal third with 7 points.

Reserves D was won by Danny Marcusson with 7.5/9, ahead of Fred Schuetz on 7 and Matthew Carden on 6.5.

Dennis Mendigorin won Reserves E after beating Bruno Khodadi 2-0 in the playoff between the winners of Reserves E1 and E2.
