A new year, a new web site... we have created a new site, as a refresh of the old one, with a few new features..

it is here (http://wollongongchess.wordpress.com). Please take a look - there is space for comments as well.

Our first 5-round swiss had its 2nd round last night, but I will update that is another post.

The games on Tuesday were remarkable for their differences. Some were quiet draws, while others were on a knife edge for a long time, and unsure how they would work out.

John M and George played a Ruy Lopez opening into a middle game that looked complicated but a draw was then agreed.

Scott and John S played a game that was always equal and a draw was agreed after 30 moves, with Q+N vs Q+B (and pawns for each) but not much chance to press an advantage.

John R ran into a N sacrifice from Robert on F7 that he declined but then got a few pieces pinned by Bishop and rook and eventually lost his Queen and the game shortly after that.

John R and Marco had a wild game, with Marco sacrificing significant material and John having 2 pieces that never left their home squares. However, John found a rook move that saved his bacon and Marco could only force moves by repetition for an exciting draw.

The game of the round however was Paul vs Steve. Paul had Steve's pieces compressed and tangled on the Queen side while he also had Q and B threatening Steve's lonely King on diagonals. Steve failed to remove the centralised B and Paul's N and Rook then combined to force checkmate.

Other games, that I did not see, were a win by Mick over Vincent and a win by Arin over Antoni. So all players now have a score on the board.

The current cross table is with our results (http://wollongongchess.wordpress.com/results).

Round 4 commentary:
The George vs John S game showed a lot of promise, with each creating threats and counter threats, but in the end John defended well, ending with opposite coloured bishops and a draw.

John M and Mick seemed to go through the motions of a french defence and had a quiet draw.

John Rep was getting on top of Marco, but Marco started creating mating net threats around Johnís king and John thought too long about it and lost on time.

John Rob vs Antoni ended up with each promoting a pawn, but John managed to convert his extra pawns into a win.

Vincent played a good game against Paul, ending up with K+R vs K+B+2P in a very drawish ending. However Vincent positioned his King badly, allowing Paul to sneak a pawn home for the win.

For my game against Robert, I launched a kingside attack while Robert pieces were slightly away from the defence. One poor move allowed me to open up the position and my Q, R and B did the rest.

The final round of our first swiss for 2015 had 6 people in the running for a top 3 finish. Only 4 games were played last night due to a few forfeits. However, the games were all interesting:

Final round commentary:

The Steve v Robert game was not in the running for a place in the event, and Robert played a Nimzo-Indian defence and left Steve with doubles c pawns. Robert finally took one of these pawns and that was his undoing with exposed Q threats losing a Rook.

My game against Paul finished first with a win for myself. Paul thought at one stage that he could sac a R for N+2P but it turned out only N+1P. It ended with me a R v B and the pawns equal. And so this meant the other 2 games in the running for an equal 1st place had to find a win.

The Mike vs George game started as a Ruy Lopez and went down familiar paths for a bit. It got interesting when Mike sac'ed a N on g7 but George also counter-saced on e4. This left them both with Q and 2R then just Q+R each and scattered pawns. Mike grabbed a distant pawn with his Q and George could just then repeat Q checks for a draw.

John S v John M then had the only chance to catch me for first place. John S had more pawns in a R+B ending, but the pawn count dwindled under time pressure, with John M also threatening a checking repetition. They ended with just R+P v R and agreed the draw.

So 2 games that looked like there was to be a result ended as draws, creating a 4-way tie for second place.

Next week we start the 7 round Handicap tournament.

Hi SHump, any weekenders after July? I can organise my holidays in Kiama to co-inside if yes! Cheers! Original plan was (well partly it still is) to come down after the Zonal in Sydney!
Having a look at the website now, your swiss rapids in July / August seem interesting!

Wollongong doesn't normally host many weekenders. However the Macedonian community used to organises an informal weekend chess tournament as a part of their Ilinden festival in early August. Not sure if it is still the case but perhaps Scott known something about it.

Yes Elliot, there is the Macedonian (one day) event, run by John M, a club member. He could separately post here some details closer to the time. I thought it was near August, but don't quote me on that. We haven't run a normal 2 or 3 day weekender for many years, for more reasons than I could care to name. But I hope we could try another weekender sometime...

Thanks for the response Scott (and Barry). An one dayer instead for a weekender is actually even better for me, since I will have to make only one trip from Kiama to Wollongong (not a real biggy anyway)! Hope everything goes well so I will come down and see you all - Matt in particular whom I haven't seen for quite a few years now! Cheers

If it is still apart of the Ilinden festivities then it will be around August 2 (probably within a week) as that is Ilinden (St Elijah's Day) in the Macedonian Orthodox calendar. I note Ilinden is a Sunday this year.

I know RW I missed the Ilinden celebrations commemorating the 110th anniversary of the uprising there in 2013 by a few days! :( I was in Skopje anyway (not in Krusevo where the main celebration take place).

Back to the chess now and even if the event is held on the same day, I am sure the organisers will cater for the players with some
turli tava ;) or polneti piperki just to name a couple of the many delicacies of that part of the Balkans.

Well we had 4, yes 4! new faces turn up on Tuesday for the start of the Handicap event (7 rounds over 7 Tuesdays). I am not sure if the new web site has anything to do with it... The handicap event is a great chance for lower rated players to shine, as we delve into the murky twilight underworld of the handicap points system. Current scores below. We started by drawing starting positions out of a hat, just to add some varieity to the first round.

Well, we are up to round 5 now, so about half way. Daniel Sa has cleared out from the rest of the field, probably due to him not having had a rating before so we have estimated his for this event. He lost in round 4, so the 44 point gap is closing a little. The draw for round 5 and the current results are below.

A very big well done to Daniel Sa, a new club member, who cleaned up in a big way in the recent Handicap tournament. It was also very encouraging to see 4 new faces at the club last Tuesday, and I hope this translates into more players in the coming events. The next event is 'Blitz round 2', one night of many 5 minute (lightning) games, where nothing is certain. The following 2 Tuesdays will see 6 rounds of rapid chess - not 5 minute, not 90 minutes, but a more pedestrian 20 minutes each.
