Does this need some further clarification such has what time period the rule covers and what geographic area it covers? For instance I'm running late so I text the arbiter 5 minutes into the round to say I shall be there soon ... do I get forfeited?

I'm glad that you're even considering playing!

Sorry, I'm no lawyer. The idea is to simply implement the FIDE mobile phone law as it was before July 2014. That is, players keep their phones turned off during play. As an arbiter, I have no wish to ensure players don't have mobile phones on their person as is implied by the more recent rules.

As far as your example goes, you have not commenced play, so you would not be forfeited. At the same time the arbiter would not get the text, because the arbiter is playing in the tournament and would have his mobile off (unless he gave himself permission to have his mobile on :D)!

Look forward to seeing you tomorrow night!

Alas, my question was purely theoretical as I have a chess lesson every Thursday evening and a tennis meeting to follow tomorrow night. Perhaps however I shall be there by proxy as a friend of mine is considering playing. Being an old-fashioned chap I'm not a big fan of mobile phone rules but if there is such a rule being applied with the extreme penalty of forfeiture then I think the rule needs to be clearly stated and understood. I've never played under a mobile phone rule so (for example) I don't know if I'm only in danger of forfeiture whilst my games is still going, or perhaps it applies whilst any games are still going? Similarly I have no idea whether or not after my game I can go to the analysis room with my opponent and use Shredder on my iPad to check our game.

That's a great pity!

With respect, my understanding of the FIDE Laws is that a “player” is a person actually playing a game. Before the game starts and after the game finishes that person is a spectator and not a player. There are different rules for spectators and they cannot forfeit a game. However, they can be asked to leave the playing hall, if they are disruptive to play.

Congratulations to Kyle Gibson on his first adult tournament win!

We've been away since Friday so my first chance to post. Congratulations Kyle! :) Well deserved - it's been great to see the progress you've made over the years since you first started playing at Croydon as a young junior (for those who don't know, Kyle's ties to Croydon go back all the way to 2005, the club's foundation year).

Amazing result. For a junior to finish ahead of a strong IM is a great achievement!
