Amazing last round game against Chris Kolak.
It all started when I misplayed the opeining and had to give away my queen for rook and bishop...then in a highly complicated endgame (both players had passed pawns rushing to be queened) I confused his King for Queen and Queen for King...and blundered rook in half- a move (was wondering how he managed to take play Kd4xg7 till I realized it was a queen on d4)...then black managed to draw endgame with bishop against queen...white may have had a win with best play ...but it was by no means easy to win that. Facinating and fun struggle.

So Michael did someone perform better against GM Ryanova than yourself and who? Or was it your last round and you only needed a draw?

AC you could try using your noggin before posting. Check the post above: if MB drew with Ryjanova and Ryjanova finished on 6 then Ryjanova must have had five wins, two draws, no losses, so the answer is no.

Yes. Been linked to many morals but I am not a scorpion even if sometimes there might be a sting in my tail! :)

I was thinking more generally that if it is in one's nature to behave in a particular way then people should not be surprised when one does so. This is true even for those who aren't "scorpions".

Your president was earning a mention in the "Just Checking" section of the latest NIC (see http://en.chessbase.com/post/just-checking-alejandro-ramirez):

... Elizabeth Warren would be a nice hotpot.

Luckily she already has a good nickname for Fight Club (Merkel) because it would be hard to go against the dual NIC- and ChessBase-endorsed "Hotpot" :)

(Actually, Ramirez is referring to the US Senator, which is really kind of sad, since IMO the prez of one of the world's oldest chess clubs has more significance in a chess context).

well I had to spend a lot of money on a meal that I did not appreciate - that old restaurant trick of charging a fortune for desserts with cheapest home brand ice cream. plus their meals' quality has dropped. I would have been happier playing chess at MCC

By the way it is just 14 hours for Michael to rediscover his mojo and assert his authority, otherwise Jammo may have to come out of retirement to show him how.

There is a reason why the results have not been posted. Can you guess what it is? Not a good result for someone who wants to challenge me to a match.

I won the last allegro with 6.5/7. The point is...irrespectively of my allegro results...you are scared! If I lose a match, it will be a lost match. If you lose the match, it will lead to certain psychological problems/issues that I would rather not describe in detail. I have no illusions about my chess so losing a chess match won't be so significant for me. I am not worried what others think about my chess, while you have a secret hope that some people seriously think you are still 2450 kind of player if they listen to your stories of past glory.
P.S. I have no problems with results being publicized irrespectively of what they are...do not assume that everybody shares the same complexes as you do.

enjoyed yesterdays tournament, hope i didn't annoy anyone by post in arbiters corner.

interesting i didn't get to play anyone my own strength (between 1600-2000) again. Swiss draw problems. winning 4 games easily against players under 1600 and cracking under pressure when playing Au fiat 2000+ players.

i think Nam and Baron were equal lead going into last round don't know who won someone will post results i think.

Now remember everyone it is on again tomorrow afternoon - someone knock M Baron off the podium please

No idea what advice you are talking about... I always treat my MCC chess friends with respect. And what podium are you talking about? our strongest Allegro players are Morris and Izzat rather than me...actually I rarely have any idea what you are talking about!
As for the allegro, Yes - it is on in 14 hours! See you there everyone!

The idea behind 13+2 is that there will be fewer arguments and disputes. It will also make the quality of chess in the endgame better because people will actually have time to work things out. Box Hill used 13+2 in the recent teams tournament, and I personally really enjoyed it. I got into an ending with Chris Wallis which was better for Chris but I ended up grinding out the draw. Fat chance of that happening with a guillotine finish!

So you would rather that worse chess win the day? (Shuffling pawns and doing nothing to get a win on time).

Also, more losses on time with 13 2 then with 15 0 because change of rythm is hard to adjust to

Surely that is just an argument for the status quo. Any change takes some adjustment. If 13+2 was the norm and you were trying 15+0 would you argue that 13+2 is to be preferred because the rhythm of 15+0 is hard to adjust to?

Scott Crowley

Thanks Michael.

It will be interesting to see if any of the views have changed after that time in either direction.

Personally from an arbitering point of view it should make life easier with the new format as less people may be likely to be calling a position drawn when the clock is low.

But it has yet to be seen if that logic equates to reality :)

Blitzing does not mean playing for time

I'm not sure what you mean then. Perhaps you should quantify your objection in a specific way.

So far you have just claimed that it was widely disliked. Far enough but what was the root cause of the dislike? You claimed that it took some time to adjust to the different rhythm. This I don't doubt but surely it is no different to adjusting from playing Bullet, Blitz, Rapid, Allegro and Classical chess. Chess players adapt already and there doesn't seem to be something fundamentally different to adjusting to a 13+2 control. The advantage is that players cannot play for time so easily except in complex positions - which in some sense is fair enough.

If it basically comes down to conservative resistance to change I too would be interested to see the views of people after 4 weeks of the new time control. I would think the inertia cause by taking people out of their comfort zones once overcome would be outweighed by not having the inconvenience of players stopping the clock with draw claims.

Jesper Norgaard
14-10-2015, 02:51 PM
In the current Blitz and Rapid World Championships in Berlin, the time controls are not 13+2 (as in this tourney) but 15+10 and 3+2. Look at the Blitz, it has the same increment per move as MCC! The unevenness between fixed time and increment time in MCC is staggering, there is almost 7 times more fixed time than increment time. I bet more games are decided by time than 15+0 because too many players rely on the increment to "save" them from losing on time, but that is an illusion, it will only come true if the position is very clarified in the end.

I would suggest a better configuration would be 10+5. If you play 60 moves in a Rapid game of this, you will get exactly 15 minutes to do it, like 13+2 and 15+0. However, for subsequent moves, you will have more power to finish the endgame well-played. Yes this might prolong each round, but I wonder if that happens so frequently to worry about. If that is a concern, it is possible to play with 10+4 or 9+4. Personally my Rapid games seldom go beyond move 60, most likely because with that speed both players will not be very accurate or put up a fierce defense when having an inferior position.

I have only played 15 games out of 700+ Rapid games that went beyond move 80. In the 9+4 mode the players will reach 15 minutes of time expired (per player) at move 90, assuming that both players have used up their fixed time at that point (which seldom happens). In other words, reaching 90 moves, usually at least one player has extra fixed time left on the clock, which again means that 30 minutes from the start of the round has still not expired.

MichaelBaron

Draw claims are not a problem as long as the arbiter knows how to handle them. Not sure what a claim should be so ''dangerous''.

Kevin Bonham

Draw claims are not a problem as long as the arbiter knows how to handle them.

Which practically no-one does (when it comes to claims for a draw by the opponent having no realistic winning chances), and it's not as simple as that anyway because even when the arbiter knows the rules the players generally don't. Bad enough trying to do it by FIDE rules but it's also seemed that MCC has had its own. I've been wondering for ages why MCC doesn't try a small increment to get rid of this problem.

We've tried increments before but for whatever reason the players don't like the increment.
Draw claims shouldn't be an issue so long as people are respectful and realise it's a social tournament and respect the decision of the arbiter whatever it is. Unfortunately it doesn't always work that way...

It's usually the players who are good in quick time controls (Michael.. Dimitry... Chris etc) who ark up about it, which leads me to think it's a little self-serving. Personally I couldn't care less whether it's 15-0, 15-1, 13-2, 10-5 or whatever else...

I'll admit an increment does significantly change the way the game is palyed though... "Pragmatic chess" becomes far more playable with no incremen, and some find that more exciting than the more correct finishes you see with an increment.

VOTE ON ALLEGRO TIME CONTROL

MCC will hold an informal secret ballot to determine whether the Saturday Allegro time control should be:
- 15 minutes per player per game; or
- 13 minutes per player per game, plus 2 second increment for each move.

No other options will be considered.

When: Saturday, 7 November 2015, just before Round 7 of the Allegro

Eligibility: Only players that have entered the Allegro on that day may vote. You do not need to be a club member to vote. Proxies not allowed.

Format:
Sylvester Urban (Club Treasurer) will be the chairperson for the vote.
1 speaker in favour of 13+2 time control will speak for maximum 2 minutes
1 speaker for 15+0 time control will speak for maximum 2 minutes
General discussion for maximum 5 minutes
Ballot papers will be handed out. Sylvester plus one scrutineer will count the votes and announce the result.

The vote will be run strictly to time and should not take more than 15 minutes.

Please note that this is an informal vote. Whatever the outcome, the Committee will periodically evaluate the suitability of the time control. The Committee reserves the right to set time controls in all MCC tournaments.

The point that it was tried before and not appreciated by players is the most powerful of all~

I believe you have to play in that event to be able to vote. If note, I am pretty sure some of them would coem just for vote. May be Sylvester can confirm whether non-players are allowed to vote. My understanding is ''NO'' but if the answer is ''Yes'' - then I will of course ask them to turn up if not for playing then just for defending the time control they prefer.

Not so sure if some Allegro players have completely disapproved of the change to the extent of not turning up for the event.
In any case I think that it would be useful to postpone the vote for a week so
1) all concerned can be notified that there's an election to be held. (not all of the regulars follow chess chat) and
2) the pro or against speakers can prepare their cases better and in a more systematic way!

to My Chess its no crisis but as far as enjoyment is concerned - it is! Far less fun!

I hope this most serious of indictments can be rectified quickly.

This weeks allegro was a 3 way tie for first between O'Molloy, Partsi and Specht

Baron could not cope with the new time control. Its interesting to see how many players will support the new time control.

Baron blundered in one move in the last round to someone rated 400 points below him around move 20...if not he would win the tournament...so as i said - nothing to do with time control. Furthermore, 2 of the 3 players who tied for first were 2nd and 3d seeds, therefore they can play well with any time control. The 3d is the player I blundered to and our overall allegro record is like 50-2 (I can recall losing to him once before) in my favour. Top players will keep winning with any time control...the question is...will they get bored and stop playing or not if time control is unexciting?

That's about the lowest argument you could possibly come up with for 15 0.

Tell me instead, what is the actual fun you were referring to in 15 0, is that when Baron drops his queen in the last 2 seconds of his opponents time, because he knows he will always win on time anyways? Try that with 2-sec increment, and Baron will find out how quickly a player with a queen extra and a 2 second increment can play. Now that would really be fun :)

Well Baron, I note that of all the fun you have with the 15 0 mode, you are not willing to allow even 2 seconds of fun per move to your opponent!? Isn't that a bit stingy? Come on, if he wasted 13 minutes in bad time management, surely he will do the same with the last 2 seconds per move?

Or maybe not, since UrBANE managed to save a draw in the game he mentioned (not against you though, against Chris Wallis). Perhaps that is the real reason Chris is not happy with the increment modification in MCC. It actually matters!

As an example what CAN be done with a 2-second increment from a 3+2 game of the World Championship of Blitz, here is mate with knight and bishop executed by GM L. Tigran Petrosian against Anton Korobov. Of course running into move 126 in a
Blitz game is not likely to happen unless there is increment.

95. Kc4 Ke3 96. Kd5 Bg3 97. Kc4 Nf4 98. Kc5 Ke4
99. Kc6 Bf2 100. Kd6 Kd4 101. Kc6 Nd5 102. Kd6 Bg3+ 103. Kc6 Nb4+ 104. Kb5 Bd6
105. Kb6 Kc4 106. Kb7 Kc5 107. Ka8 Kc6 108. Ka7 Nd5 109. Ka8 Nb6+ 110. Ka7 Bc7
111. Ka6 Bb8 112. Ka5 Nd5 113. Ka6 Nb4+ 114. Ka5 Kc5 115. Ka4 Kc4 116. Ka5 Bc7+
117. Ka4 Bb6 118. Ka3 Nd3 119. Ka4 Nb2+ 120. Ka3 Kc3 121. Ka2 Kc2 122. Ka3 Bc5+
123. Ka2 Nd3 124. Ka1 Bf8 125. Ka2 Nc1+ 126. Ka1 Bg7# 0-1

Two other GM colleagues of Petrosian where not so lucky in this tournament. Sethuraman took 75 moves in NOT mating with this material, before the arbiters called it a day - 75 moves without pawn move or capture IS a draw according to 9.6(b)

"the game is drawn if any consecutive series of 75 moves have been completed by each player without the movement of any pawn and without any capture. If the last move resulted in checkmate, that shall take precedence."

Motylev even bungled it to stalemate his opponent Bogdanovich

2K5/3n4/2k5/b7/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 88
Instead of 87...Nd7??, 87...Ne6 followed by 88...Nc7 would have led to the same W-maneuver that Petrosian performed. What was he thinking ??

Grischuk showed superb technique to win against Karjakin in the Russian Piterenka Cup tournament with B+N, also with a 2-second increment:

A reminder that there is officially no Allegro at MCC next Saturday due to cup weaknender. However, if there are some players who still turn up...there may me a little unofficial one...so if you are not playing in Hjorth memorial..hope you got my message and turn up to ''spectate'' the weekender ;).

To make it clear: 13 2 was committee's idea...so we actually managed to beat the entire committee...at least 3 committee members were also playing in the allegro (and voting) ..so it was a great victory against the ''establishmennt''.

Hi Michael - I don't particularly appreciate this statement, given that the "establishment" is made up of volunteers who give hundreds of hours per year to the club for free.

Sorry, Sylvester - I am not a lawyer so did not choose the words carefully. What I am trying to say is: committee was supporting 13 2 but nevertheless, final vote favoured 15 0.

OK regardless of time control, this is a very serious and popular competition. Other commitments have led me not to be able to participate in the Allegros so far but this isn't the plan for 2016. Ceteris paribus and as soon as I my schedule for 2016 is completed I will set aside at least 10 Saturdays for MCC Allegro! I look forward to seeing you all there and being a part of it!
