The Suncoast Chess Club is holding a 3-day 7-round Open Tournament on the Australian Day Weekend 24 - 26 January 2015

Now there is something different about tournament compared to normal tournaments,

1) time control is 60 min + 30 sec per move from the 1st move; that means all notation has to be made.

2) We are allowing a person two byes, so if you like you can take Saturday off and play five games over Sunday and Monday or have a bye on Sunday playing two games per day. We DO want everyone there on the Monday.

Check out our Web Page to find more details and entry form http://suncoastchess.webs.com/

See ya there

I am thinking of a couple or three weeks holiday in SE Asia after the Australian Open. If I don't go there It's going to be a toss b/n yours or the NSW Aus Day Weekender. It has been more than two years since I played in either QLD or NSW w/enders so it's about a 33% likelihood to come over!

Be happy to have you, we are trying to bring chess out into the open. PS that comment referred to Ian Rogers quote.

Great to see the tournament details out already! Good luck with the 2015 Australia Day Open at Pacific Lutheran College in Woodlands Boulevard Meridan Plains 4551 on Saturday January 24, Sunday January 25 and Monday January 26. I love the idea of 2 half point byes being available! I am thinking about taking two half point byes myself!

I want to thanks Stokesy for stating the obvious points that I missed in my opening statement. I knew where the tournament was going to be that's the main thing. Anyway I wanted to get everyone to look at the web site, http://suncoastchess.webs.com/, I have finally got it up and going again. Everyone go look at the "Event Winners" page, and see the history of our Rook trophy, all our Open Winner's names appear on it.

Hi Bec, I 've decided to go straight to QLD after the Australian Open, have my break there, play at your weekender, and then fly to Asia from Sunshine Coast. So I am definitely in it! Cheers and good luck to all! PS it's not too early to fill form and send the money in now, is it? E.R.

couldn't be more to the point!

BTW I am staying down at the beach and moving to Buderim for the tournament! Too far from the venue otherwise! Initially I thought the tournament was going to be held at the Club till the Prez chipped in! :) all good, see you all there! :)

See ya there.
BTW The weekly club is at Buderim and the trn venue is at Meridan Plains, which is sort of between Kawana and Caloundra.
People may want to look at a map before arranging accommodation. If I could figure out how to add a link to google map in chess chat I would. I did manage to put one on our website.

For anyone who deposit money into the bank, I would like them to send a quick email to suncoastchess@gmail.com
One reason I would like to have people emails. Two I have just taken on the roles of club treasurer, event organizer, web master and helping with the juniors so I do feel like I playing catch up.
Believe it or not I wasn't planing to takeover the club, I wasn't even planning to go to the club's last AGM. It was a last minute decision.

Interesting I was under the impression that you played in the Ryde-Eastwood Open in Sydney last year - or was that a different Elliott Renzies? :P You must mean more than 2 years since you played an Oz Day Weekender in QLD/NSW :)

I'd love to play in this tournament but the overlap with the Australian Juniors unfortunately prevents that :(

Good luck with the tournament nevertheless Bec! 3 dayers are always great fun!

Yea, we knew about the clash and it's disappointing not to get the top juniors there. But 3 day week-end don't come around that often, so we decided to go ahead with it. Who knows if this is received well, I might go for bigger and better in 2016 and hope for no clash.

There will almost always be a clash between any event held on the Australia Day Weekend and the Australian Juniors, especially when the Australian Open/Championship starts after New Years Day. it is just a matter of logistics.

Hey I can always hope. I have also been reminded that 26 Jan 2016 is a Tuesday, in QLD at least that means no long weekend. So I have decided just to concentrate on 2015 make it the best I can and enjoy the longer games.

I also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a peaceful new year and may all your battles be on the chess board.

There has been a slight change, I'm going to be the DoP. I hope that doesn't upset too many people but I'm always fair, impartial and try my best to get rounds started on time. See ya there

Bec Bleney

For those who are interested, The SCC Aust Day trn, is now an ACF event Class 2.

People have also been asking me if I have been a DoP before, not recently I haven't. But from 2004 to 2006 ( I think it was those 3 years) I was the President of the SCC and I did a lot of DoP work locally during that time. I gained a lot of experience and knowledge having Bill Powell as my Vice-President and always in the best of humour "suggesting to me" what I should be doing.

Yay I am playing in this tournament. First tournament for me since the 2012 Gold Coast Open. Can't wait to see JaK again. Have not seen him since he ate some bad peaches at the 2012 Caloundra Open and was unfit to play the final rounds.

Two sets of Grand Prix points can be won at the SunCoast Australia Day Open!
You could obtain points in the 2015 ACF Grand Prix!
You will definitely gain points in the 2015 CAQ Participation Grand Prix just by taking part.
Both Grand Prix events give away lots of bonus cash prizes at the end of the year!
Queenslanders won 11 of the 17 cash prizes on offer in the 2014 ACF Grand Prix, a fantastic result!
Let's see if we can do even better in the 2015 ACF Grand Prix!

And the President of CAQ Mr Mark Stokes is a man who leads by example! He absolutely blitzed the opposition in the recent Australian Open (Minor Division) at Castle Hill - Sydney showing the youngsters how it's done!

Somebody asked me for the current line up for the tournament so if I give to one I give to all.
I added a link on our web sit http://suncoastchess.webs.com/ under the entryforms tab.
So far it is only a small Tournament with 20 players but it seems to be a very competitive field. With people coming from Bundaberg and Gladstone with a few good juniors in the mix. I will be expecting some tight interesting games.

Hi All
Rebecca is right, it is a very competitive field that has already entered! Max Kershaw, a former top correspondence player, will add to the overall strength. Max defeated Tony Weller, the winner of the 2014 Sydney International Challengers Event, on Wednesday night at Redcliffe. Both Tony and Max are looking forward to the Suncoast Australia Day Weekender! John Buciu also intends to play! Gene Nakauchi will not have an easy time, but I will put my $1 bet on Gene to win it!

Entries have made it to 33. Not to late to register and play the final five games on Sunday and Monday and still receive byes for round 1&2. Round one almost finished and round two due to start at 3:30.

What a close interesting first day of the tournament we have had. Ratings means very little in this tournament.
Upsets in the first round, Ky Brutnell (875) defeated Mark Deuble (1561); Aaron Fahey (1288) defeated Tony Weller (1739); Joshua Morris (1298) drew with Ross Lam (1771).
The second round was just as tough.
Mihkel Vohla (1580) defeated Ricardo Atanacio (overseas rating 1800); Alin Stanciu (1192) defeated Mark Deuble (1561); two other games lasted nearly 3 hours for both to end in a draw.
Aurel-John Bucia (1523) vs Patrick Harris (1040)
Martin Carter (946) vs Karthik Gurunathan (1330)
What will round 3 bring us tomorrow.

Great to see you get to 33 players Rebecca! Those upsets show what that you would be best off not knowing your opponent's rating before you play them! I liked your post inviting players to still enter on Sunday and 2 half point byes would be awarded to them for Saturday! I WAS tempted! Please say hello to Elliot Renzies for me! I hope you got the CAQ Tournament subsidy cheque! Did you know Yi Liu is leading the Under 18 Open Australian Juniors on 7.5/8 with just 1 game left to play on Sunday! You can see his last game live from Canberra on this website: http://www.ajcc.org.au/ Tom Maguire is just half a point behind the leader in the Under 16 Open as well!

I said hello to Elliott, he says hello back. Next time you don't go to a tournament you need to put out an announcement everyone keeps asking about you. Yes I got the check, thank you. It was a long hot day and I'm tired, to save me giving the day wrap up I have put the round 6 pairings, the standings and the cross table up on our web site, under the entry tab. Some players even played the last round outside in the shade, they said it was a lot more enjoyable. That's what Suncoast Chess is all about enjoying chess.

Well done. Rebecca, I recommend we all play outside tomorrow. It was much cooler than the sweatbox upstairs. Maybe the morning round is OK upstairs.

Just to let other people know, this venue is normally very good and the fans do a perfectly good job, and most people still played in the room. But when the idea was suggested, I saw no sense not to allow people the option, I had a good view of both indoor and outdoor areas. It is now 8.30 at night I still think it is hot, and the weather bureau agrees with me. It is 26.7 degrees relative humidity 90%,

Gene the Human Chess Machine Wins with a Picket Fence, the other results will be posted somewhere by Bec.It was a very Enjoyable tournament,i even got a Chocolate For My upset win over Jeff Dyer, should have been a draw, but i was a bit lucky. But the Curse of winning means i had to play a harder opponent in the last round who was a bit too good,it was good to see Elliot again after a long time and what a nice Bloke he is!!Stoksey you picked right again, you should be able to retire with all those winnings.

Hi Guys
Congratulation to Gene and to all the division winners, Charles, Stuart, David and Alin. Full results can be found on our web page http://suncoastchess.webs.com/ under "tournaments & result" tab.
I also like to thank everyone that come to the tournament and hope they enjoyed themselves. You made it very easy for me to be the dop.
I also like to thank club members for helping me by picking things up, especially when disaster occurred and we run out of disposable coffee cups first thing this morning. I think a few players felt the lack of caffeine.
See you all next time
Rebecca

Here's the lovely venue! The Pacific Lutheran College! Mind you this is only a small part of the whole complex! :) It's very comfortable, with plenty room of analysis, common rooms and playing grounds! Bec was a great hostess, (thanks for the lifts back to the hotel Bec), a friendly and efficient Director and a good friend! Well the rest is a bit of a pictorial report! Cheers to all and see you soon! :)
