Macquarie University hosted an event today organised by the Sydney Academy of Chess. SAC are generously donating the proceeds from this tournament to the NSWJCL.

The Primary division was won by St Ives North Public School (captained by Kevin Shen) with 18/21 ahead of Sydney Grammar Edgecliff with 17/21.

The Secondary division was won by Killara High, captained by Thomas Xuan (ACF:1973) with 19/21 ahead of Sydney Boys High and Baulkham Hills (15/21).

I (USYD) managed to win the university division with 6/7 ahead of Bernard Chau (ACU) and Chris Ball (Macquarie) (both 5.5/7) and last year's winner Adrian Chau (UTS) (5/7).

I believe the 480 players in the event is the most of any NSW tournament (not counting the weekly Friday afternoon competitions) in the past 5 years. I think some teams used reserves, so the actual number may actually be higher than that.

Congrats on your win David! What a close finish, a draw between the Chau brothers after your win secures you first.

Also 480 players! What a massive tournament, well done to Sydney Academy for holding it. Will there be any more similar tournaments held in the future?

Yes, I won my last game quickly so was able to watch some of it. Adrian actually probably should have beaten Bernie (in which case he would have tied for second instead).

This was the third time it's been run and it's planned to be an annual event. The uni provides a nice venue - I think they like having potential future students coming and seeing the uni.
