Norths won the second leg of the Little Board against Harbord last night, retaining the Centenary Shield for the sixth consecutive year. While last year's match was close, with Norths winning by only 2 points, this year the margin across the two legs was 21.5-8.5.

The second leg was won 12-5 by Norths, with the results as below. Harbord was white on the even-numbered boards:

Good to see that Russian émigré Lev Aptekar played. I knew him in Wellington and did hear he was living in Dee Why (which I confirmed by calling him!) and doing some chess coaching again. He wrote some great books on tactics, one of which I own. He would be getting on in years now and I also heard his health was not the best so I hope he is doing well. In NZ he put together whole packages of training materials.

Yes, Aptekar wrote a nice chess tactics book, I can recall being surprized that there were nice chess books coming out of NZ

Born 1936 so at least 77 now.
