Congratulations to Tony Dowden and John Myers - joint winners of the 2014 Queensland Veterans' Championship. This is Tony's second equal first in this event in as many years, and for John the result is a remarkable achievement, it being his first tournament in almost ten years.

Thanks to the nine players who competed. It was an enjoyable day, with some very hard fought chess.

A great day out at the Veterans! Yes, Congrats to Tony Dowden and John Myers! John had not played a tournament game since 2005! What a comeback! And Tony Dowden is just about unbeatable in these Veteran Events! Tony Weller took 3rd prizemoney with another solid performance.

A big thank-you to Michael D'Arcy for directing yet another event really well and Gail Young from the Qld Womens' Chess League for putting on this event once again!

... Tony Dowden is just about unbeatable in these Veteran Events! ... I doubt it ;) For starters I can think of a couple of veteran IM's who might enter next time!

Many thanks Michael, Gail & Mark :) Very well done John - a nice double-piece sac forcing a perpetual check in our final game. Tony W also played very solidly fir third.

Well done Dr Tony D. On 2 first equals. I see Kevin Casey did not have one of his best results but it sounds like it was an enjoyable and friendly tournament.

Hi Adamski -

LOL - I think that's the first time in my chess career I've only scored 50%! Totally deserved kudos to both Tony Weller and David Lovejoy, however, for outplaying me with great precision.

Unfortunately the tournament was only 4 rounds, so I didn't get the opportunity to clash swords with my old arch-rival John Myers, who triumphantly returned to chess after many years way - great to see. Had a discussion with Stokesy about the format for next time, so hopefully (if the rest of the players agree) there might be some changes next year. The 30/30 time control turned out to be a bit of a dud (some of the games really dragged on, slowing down the day for everyone). 4 rounds in 9 hours in a one-dayer isn't so good, I think. I'd love to see maybe a 20/10 time control and 6 or 7 rounds next time, perhaps. More rounds gives a better representation of playing strength across the course of the day.

Also, I don't think awarding a full point bye to a player who shows up late for round 1 is a habit that tournament directors want to get into to, especially in an event that's only 4 rounds long. Not really fair to the others.

Big thanks to Gail for once again organising this event, and Michael Darcy for his very capable TD skills as always - it's a tough event to direct because everything depends a lot on the turnout on the day, and each year is different - truly seat-of-your-pants tournament direction!

Cheers,
Kevin Casey

I agree with Kevin that 4 rounds is too short and also that in that short length of tournament, if you turn up late you should not expect a full point bye.

Agree as well. But congrats to the co-winners.
