All the best with the running of the tourney!

Moved this one for the second year running to better fit in with a busy December in Vic chess. Would be nice if a clash with lidums could be avoided in the future as we're likely to get top players down for this one in coming years.

Yup, fair enough! There's a wealth of almost continuous tourneys in December:
MCC Christmas Swiss: December 5-7
Lidums Australian Young Masters: December 8-11
Australasian Masters: December 13-21
Canterbury Summer Swiss: December 27-30
then followed by, Australian Open: January 2-11 :D

Simon please count me in for this tournament!
Byes (*) for the two evening rounds 1 (Fri) and 4 (Sat) required if possible.
Thanks in advance!
(*) Not necessarily 1/2 point byes if 6 round tournaments do not provide for that!

Do you mind showing me where in Fide rules it says so? :)
GM Andersson played in Bad-Visse this year and he had about 4 byes in a 9 round event.

Multiple half-point byes are not strictly consistent with the FIDE Swiss/Dutch pairing rules, no matter how many rounds there are, but do not prevent an event being FIDE-rated.

Therefore, I would assume that unless there is a specific rule - it is at the discression of the organizers.

Yes, excluding certain official FIDE tournaments in which half-point byes are banned. Beyond that the organisers should always state in advance if allowing multiple half-point byes (as has been done in this case).

:(....and I was expecting wishes of good luck...I am pretty sure I am playing more than 2 games!
Prize...the biggest prize of all is the joy of playing chess.

It doesn't add up. 6 rounds. 5 half-point byes. Unless I am severely numerically challenged, that actually leaves one game played? So I guess the 5 half-point byes comment must have been a joke. My guess is it is 2 - morning rounds!!

AzureBlue

Entry list says Michael Baron (R2,R3) FM 2350 which means Michael's taking two half-point byes (in Rounds 2 and 3) hence he is playing 4 games as there are 6 rounds in total :P (only a maximum of 2 HPBs are available)

This not entirely accurate guess its morning round plus allegro. Thats why I am surprised I have not got wishes to good luck yet.

Whaaaaat, no flagging people? :(

In all seriousness, just keep at it. You'll be amazed what you can calculate in a 90 min game, opposed to a 15 min one.

A morale boost for all the MCC members playing in the Xmas Swiss today-

MCC history is being made in London at the Super Rapidplay (25 mins + 10 sec increment), with IM Ari Dale WINNING against GM John Nunn and then having a decent position against Vishy Anand. Ari (sometime "Airedale Terrier") played 5 rounds of rapid and is on 4/5. He beat a 1600 in round 1, then an unrated in round 2. Round 3 was against another IM rated 2478 - won that, then faced off against J Nunn (rated 2601) and won! Next round against Vishy Anand, I'm told Ari played really well and held his own, but blundered and ended up losing. ... I hope he's wearing an MCC shirt at this time.

Amazing bravery to play Gruenfeld against Vishi. The opening was played in world championship and he was domintating Carlsen in the opening. Ari was worse out of the opening but kept on fighting very well. Great show of both character and chess skill. He was not afraid of the chess giant. That makes me believe, he will be a worthy competitor in the B section of Tata Steel and will score some scalps.

Re position after 30...Qxa5 - it may be equal according to chess engins but clearly much more enjoyable to play for white than for black.

FM Michael Baron. His presence, regardless of form or results, always adds to the prestige of tournaments. Next to him Zachary Loh who had a good warm up for the World Juniors Championship in Hungary. PHOTO: Elliott Renzies

Allegro king ...is king in allegro only...slow chess my current playing level turned out to be very poor. - I fully deserved not winning my last game

Thanks Jonathan, one of the highlights of the tournament was GM Papin showing a genuine interest for all the games in all rounds played. He strolled from board to board looking at positions. The juniors loved it! Here's a moment where a GM (Vasily Papin) looks at the position of a potential future GM (Karl Zelesko)!

An excellent and enjoyable piece of work!
Comfortably inclusive in regards to thematic varieties and applicable to the expert as well as to the amateur / beginner chess player.
I thoroughly enjoyed the GM Vasily Papin interview which showed that our esteemed visitor apart from his chess strength, also possesses a delightful sense of humour!
Gary, in this short piece of excellent delivery combined his pleasant physical presence (so important for visual presentations) as well as his high standard of knowledge and use of the English language to produce a remarkable chess production with the simplest technical equipment available.
Other highlights:

Selection of critical positions to illustrate themes.
Simple but sound and comprehensible analysis.
Provision of a whole picture of what went on in the final stage(s) of the tournament.
Slow, viewer/listener friendly and relaxed pace!

If I could find something to suggest, it would be a bit more attention to the audio editing applications - tone and level of voice in particular.
In conclusion I would like to congratulate Gary  for his formidable effort and to encourage him to present us with more of this!
A note to chess organisers in general:
If the 2014 Christmas Swiss YouTube video as produced by Gary Bekker isn't an excellent example
of chess promotion to potential sponsors, then I, honestly, don't know what else is there!

Great photos Elliott! :)

thanks Gary! :)
