Round 1: Sandler lost on board 5 against the current Latvian Champion Kovalenko. Wallis won. Wallace...does not appear to be playing despite registering for the tournament.

Round 2, Wallis defeated a strong GM (Fedorov) to get to 2/2. Leonid also won his game and is now on 1/2.

Good luck, Leonid!
When someone on 1/2 has to play Shirov, it shows how amazingly strong an open tournament can be!

Shirov got a taste of his own medicine from a sub-2300 FM in the opening round. After his opponent played the Shirov-like 20.Nf5!?, Shirov's idea of 23...Rd5? turned out very badly.

The ending black got seems to be Ok. I think if Shirov wanted a draw he would get one. The problem was he was pushing too hard for a win and burnt the bridges.

Sandler - Shirov.

Interesting game. Not til the late 30s that white seems to be really struggling (and then apparently losing, instructively, after taking the pawn on 46). Before that the position is unbalanced and at times white's position is strong.

I wonder what happened to Sam Shankland (after his imperious Olympiad). Was he ill?
