Sounds fantastic, do you have any idea of how many Burnie Chess Club members may be involved in this as well?

idledim

I'd guess those who live in Ulverstone mainly - we'll see. There's likely a couple of players who can't make it to Burnie who can make it Mondays to Devonport.

Looks like 4 too many results (4 rounds / 8 players should = 16 results?)
James was probably drawing our game but blundered in time trouble. I thought Ben Ivory showed a lot of promise for a newcomer.

I would say the only blunder was getting into time-trouble. Exchanging into that rook endgame didn' matter as i only had 10 seconds left.
Is anyone willing to play as black in the Cochrane Gambit?

A picket fence (7/7) for Denis in the Allegro - with David 2nd on 6; Lenard 3rd on 5 and James 4th on 4. Thanks Chespoter - look forward to meeting you over the Board. Not sure why no Horton's yet, James - but i hope they can find the time. I think Russell might have tennis or something on Mondays.

Good to see Vinod and Noah for the first time. Vinod played better than his standing might indicate. I didn't see Noah's games, but he obviously did well.
Lenard and Zenwill be away next week, so it makes sense to play the round where they'd face each other first up. I'll post the draw details this evening. It will mean that 2 players - and i'll make sure one of them is me - will have just the 2 rounds (with their game against either Zen or Lenard postponed.)
The Openings for next week will be Dave's choice (The Budapest: d4 Nf6 c4 e5) and Lenard's choice (King's Pawn game C50: e4 e5 Bc4 Nc6 Nf3 h6 d4 exd 0-0 )
Anyhow: Draw details to follow. Cheers.

Not sure how well i will play because the Chesskids State Final is at Launceston on Monday

My Cochrane Gambit 'helped' Noah to an upset win over Lenard when Noah played as White

James Peirce
17-09-2014, 09:48 AM
Good to see Vinod and Noah for the first time. Vinod played better than his standing might indicate. . Defintely agree with that he gave me quite a lot of trouble in our 2nd game where he played as White. He also nearly had me beaten at the Devonport Chesskids Tournament. For some reason he seems to play really well against me.

idledim

It is our intention to submit games for Rapid play ratings: I'm using Vega / not sure if ACF take Vega files or if it still has to be Swissperfect - anyhow, Dave and I have had the conversation and he's happy to transfer if necessary. Good luck for Monday, James (Launceston + Devonport)

I believe you, me (James) and Zen are the only people on perfect scores (i play Zen next though i believe)
Standings after 8 games
Dennis McMahon, James Peirce 6/6
Zen Zero 4/4
Noah Ollington,David Hughes 6/8 (Noah and David split their 2 games 1 win a piece)
Lenard Lange 3/4
These are what i can remember with certainty

idledim

There were some scores not recorded from Monday night's games. Not sure if Dave can be on 6/8, since he lost both games to me in Week 1.
I discussed the draw with David last night since no opening had been settled on. We agreed that we should play the Schliemann and the Benko Accepted. Dave said he'll let his players know. I'll let Zen and Lenard know - and will post the draw in the next hour or so, James. Cheers.

Lenard went 2-0 against Dave; I went 2-0 against James and 2-0 against Zen -which leaves me leading so far on 12/12, with Lenard 2nd. on 9. My game with James was very tense. In an Evans Declined i went a pawn up, but then captured a rook instead of retaking James' a6 pawn - which allowed him to queen. I'd seen this up to a point but missed that he queens with check, which meant i didn't have the time to snatch his other rook with my knight. This left me 3 pawns up and one queen down! Luckily, James let me back into it under time pressure and i was able to hold on for the win. It would certainly not have been an injustice had it gone the other way.

Maybe, although i tend to dislike anything that unbalances the game before it begins. I defintely think that an increment of some sort would prevent too many games being decided on time like 2 of mine aginst you and the one against Leonard where i was up a queen but i ran out of time so it was agreed a draw.

A few players away for the long w/e, but we played some catch up Handicap and Fixed Opening games, followed by a quick knockout Lightning to finish.
Paul drove from Burnie to check out the DCC, which was excellent; also good to see Felix travelling from Forth - even if he did make me pay for a wild Smith Morra. David had prepared some good analysis against my beloved Benko, but in the hurly burly of lightning time controls he got the move order wrong and suffered at the hands of the ubiquitous Benko bishop. James played well to make the final of the lightning against me, but he also lost an A1 rook to that pesky black bishop and had to concede soon after.
Next week the Handicap and Fixed Opening tournaments should be completed - and most probably the Rapid Play after that.

We have 3! tournaments running at the moment. Standings for all three tournaments
Fixed Openings:1st Denis McMahon, 2nd James Peirce 3rd David Hughes
Handicap (time)1st James Peirce, 2nd David Hughes 3rd Denis McMahon
Spring Allegro(started last night) =1st James Peirce and Denis McMahon 3rd David Hughes/Felix (idledim should be able to tell us.)
In the Spring Allegro last night I defeated Leonard Lange, Zen Zero and David Hughes but somehow managed to end up in a KBN vs K endgame against Denis McMahon with about 1.5 minutes on the clock and I ran out of time.

Hi James, apologies for not posting standings, etc - my Dad is visiting for a week so i'm mostly out and about. I'll have them up before Monday. I think the real problems for me in our game were swapping the 2 minor bits for rook and pawn, thinking i could pick up the h3 pawn and then having to swap queens - and then touching the wrong bit allowing bishop x rook on f7. Anyway, it was a good game for you and a pity about the time pressure. Go Vishy!

Both tournaments still have games incomplete
Handicap:7/8 performance rating 1807

On monday when it was discussed as to whether these tournaments would be rated i said i wanted them to be rated, now even more so! My projected new rating is approximately 1636.:owned::owned::owned:

On monday when it was discussed as to whether these tournaments would be rated i said i wanted them to be rated, now even more so! My projected new rating is approximately 1636.:owned::owned::owned:

Just to be clear some kinds of tournaments cannot be rated.

These include any form of fixed opening tournament (or any tournament with any restrictions on opening choice), and also any tournament that uses handicapping in specific games in the form of material, time, moves or move restrictions.

Any completed tournaments for rating for the December list should be sent to me and/or Bill quickly for ratings. If the player IDs have not been imported from the master IDs then please send them to me as SP files.

If there are a very small number of games (say <5) to be played that may be played in a later period then they can be sent to me with those games missing, then notify the results once known. If games won't be played then score them as forfeits or delete them.

Thanks Kevin - that's how i understood it. I'll contact Dave Hughes to see if we can get most of the ratings stuff to you some time next week. On another note: do you know how many are coming up for Neville Ledger's tournament? I spoke with Neville about entries this evening - and apparently only about 12 have so far formally entered. Cheers. Denis

On another note: do you know how many are coming up for Neville Ledger's tournament?

I made another announcement about the tournament at the club this weekend and stressed that people must formally enter by the deadline as is stated. I understand at least Bonham, Little, Rolph and Kruup to be coming up with a few others possible.

At the halfway mark, Denis McMahon leads the Summer Allegro on 5/5 - with Dave Hughes and James Peirce on 3.5. Denis was clearly lost against Dave Hughes but found a cheap trick to get out of gaol. He was winning against James Peirce before a brain snap let James back into the game - but time wasn't James' friend!

Only 4 players last night on account of Australia Day - but enough for Denis to get an unassailable lead in the Summer Allegro, following wins against Dylan Bourks, Dave Hughes and James Peirce. James defeated David in their individual encounter, to maintain clear 2nd. The Summer Rapidplay is due to commence next week, but we'll need to finish the Allegro first.

Hi James - at the moment you're not included in the Summer Rapid Play Round Robin; including you would create a bye and also extend the tournament by a week. This doesn't mean we can't take you as a late entry, but it would require a bit more shuffling than if we were running a Swiss, obviously. Let me know your preferences!
The Seminars can be pushed back. It's also likely that there won't be any chess on Mon. March 9 on account of the State Championships in Hobart, but more on that later. If we were able to finish the Summer Rapid Play next week, we would be back on schedule i think. Cheers. Denis

There were 18 players in the Burnie Allegro, which was played as a round robin and then another 10 games from the Burnie Lightning which Dave and I both played in. The 2014 Rapid play was a hangover from last year and this year we've played 2 Lightning, an allegro and another Rapid Play. For anyone who'll be in the area - the calendar is post# 69 on this thread.

Thanks James. Your memory is correct as per #95. We have 1 round to go to complete the Autumn allegro and then on to the Autumn Rapid Play. There's definitely a need for more publicity about the new rules for illegal moves. I'll do my best to bring everyone up to speed with these next Monday. Congratulations to Lenard for a good win over the in-form Dave Hughes.

This is the new rule for Rapidplay (which includes allegro)

An illegal move is completed once the player has pressed his clock. If the arbiter observes this he shall declare the game lost by the player, provided the opponent has not made his next move. If the arbiter does not intervene, the opponent is entitled to claim a win, provided the opponent has not made his next move. However, the game is drawn if the position is such that the opponent cannot checkmate the player’s king by any possible series of legal moves. If the opponent does not claim and the arbiter does not intervene, the illegal move shall stand and the game shall continue. Once the opponent has made his next move, an illegal move cannot be corrected unless this is agreed by the players without intervention of the arbiter.

Can someone refer me to the relevant rules in an allegro for the following:
Player A checks Player B and presses his clock, then
Player B misses that he's in check and makes another move and presses his clock, then
Player A picks up the checking piece and places it on the king's square / taking the king off the board in the process. He doesn't press his clock but claims a win on the basis of Player B's illegal move.
Anyone? Thanks.

It looks like Black can't win against correct defence because his pawns are so weak, but he does have three passed pawns and can't lose so it would be sensible to play on and make White prove the draw. Even if you get down to R+P v R White has to know the theory. 1...d3 looks like a try.

This might be the same case discussed by James at http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?15447-String-of-illegal-moves-in-Blitz but there are information differences: in James' discussion both kings were in check, and crucially James doesn't mention that A hadn't pressed his clock.

There was a similar case dealt with by Kerry Stead in a game involving David Cordover at the Aus Blitz 2014. Cordover's opponent played an illegal move and pressed the clock. Cordover picked up the opposing king and a piece to take it with, then remembered king capture was banned, then put the king and the capturing piece back on their original squares and claimed a win by his opponent's illegal move. This was correctly accepted, as Cordover had not "made" his move in response and therefore had not lost the right to claim a win.

This case could only be different to that one if Player A had "made" the king capture by taking the king off the board, putting the capturing piece on the king's square and taking his hand off the capturing piece. But even having "made" that move, because the move is illegal, and because he had not pressed the clock, he would still have the right to reverse it just as Cordover did. It is different to a legal move, where once you take your hand off it you can no longer do any different, even if you have not pressed the clock.

In my view it's a win for Player A by correct claim of illegal move by Player B. But if Player A pressed his clock after taking the king he would have lost the right to claim a win by illegal move, and Player B could claim against him.

Kevin Bonham
17-03-2015, 01:01 PM
The key point about making or not "making" illegal moves is in 4.7:

When, as a legal move or part of a legal move, a piece has been released on a square, it cannot be moved to another square on this move. The move is considered to have been made in the case of: [..]

Releasing a piece on a square when it is illegal to release it there (including king capture which is illegal under 1.2) does not prevent a player moving it somewhere else on that move and does not mean the move has been "made".

There was an oversight with the new wording 3.10a stating "A move is legal when all the relevant requirements of Articles 3.1 – 3.9 have been fulfilled." but for the case of king capture, 1.2 contradicts that.

This was another incident at Devonport - as you suspected - and not the one referred to by James earlier. I was player A and Ashton was player B. We agreed a draw because neither of us had a clue about the law. I'll make a point of drilling the new rules to the Devonport players on Monday.

If Denis hasn't released the pieces that makes it very much more obvious that he is entitled to claim the win, without having to get into all the murky stuff about whether an illegal move can be made.

If this ever happens again, I'll claim a win but Ashton was clearly winning on the board and we agreed a draw - so I'm happy to let the result stand. He had offered me a draw 3 times before and i should have accepted. I was just being difficult because he had less than a minute on his clock . Thanks for the clear adjudication. It does seem like you can capture the king - but only if you don't press the clock!

I'm suggesting a 6 round Swiss for our Fischer Rapidplay - with 2 Rounds a night and the last round of the allegro following the first 2 rounds on Monday night (23/3) - and the rate of play being game in 25 with a 10 second increment. This will keep us on track to play the tournament over the next 3 weeks and start the club champ. on time. It'll also mean that anyone who turns up who wasn't in the allegro won't have to wait around for that last round to finish. Any problems, Devonport Chess Club fans, please let me know. James and Denis both need to win their last round allegro games to guarantee a share of 1st.

Thanks Kevin - I'll let Felix know he isn't a GM. We'll finish the Rapid Play next week - yep, we are open Easter Monday - with the inaugural Club Championship starting the following week. David Hughes can't make it for Round 1 of the CC, but will play his R1 game at a later date. More importantly, don't forget the series of small raffles to raise money for MILO (no, it isn't an acronym; it's a drink). You don't need cash to bid for the books and mags to be offered, but if you don't settle your account ...... things have been known to get broken / noses have been misplaced!

Easter attendance made it impossible to complete R5 in the Rapid. The first of the MILO raffles (a chess auction to raise money for Milo???) should take place next week - followed by either the last rounds of the Rapid or the first round of the Club Championship, depending on who turns up.

Generally some good games, with Lenard and Dylan playing out the longest, with a couple of passed pawns to Lenard in a rook and pawn endgame proving too much.
Matthew dropped a Knight early, but fought on for nearly 90 minutes before succumbing to Patrick.
Ashton dispatched Zen quickly, as did James of Ben, who after abandoning the f6 post with his Knight, allowed the thematic Bishop sacrifice on h7, followed by a check with the f4 Knight, then the Queen came in via a knight capture on g5. Mate followed quickly. Well played James.
With Felix away next week, round 3 seems logical, as Felix has the bye.

Twelve players now competing for the David Hughes Board, thanks to a late entry from Vinod Fernando, who won well on his return to the club, defeating Matthew Barry. Patrick Grace made it 2/2 with an interesting win over James Peirce. David Hughes looked to be in all sorts of trouble against an improving Dylan Bourke, but they agreed a draw with Dylan having less than a minute on his clock and Dave having a probable perpetual (but definitely nothing better). Denis won a piece early against Ashton and then swapped down to a simply won endgame. With 4 players unable to make it this evening, the draw may get a bit wobbly towards the end, but at least we no longer have a bye.

Patrick and David drew, leaving Patrick a clear leader so far on 3.5/4. It was a case of the pesky Budapest gone wrong for Dave, but he recovered well in the middle game. Felix returned from W.A. to find James Peirce in good form, so James moves to clear 2nd. on 3/4. Zen defeated Dylan and Denis defeated Matthew, meaning Denis and Lenard are the only players on 100%, even if it is only 2/2! I'm told that the David - Patrick and James - Felix games should be posted this week, so hopefully they'll make it to the DCC page on the TCA website. I'm also hoping James can find out what's happened to Ashton, who has been missing in action these last 2 weeks. For what it's worth, here's the crosstable so far:

You're right that Rxf6 is a good move - but Re1 (as played) is also crushing. Black has no defence. In fact, white is easily winning at the end, even when the draw was taken, though 40.Rb7 was much stronger than hxg7 .....

We have a new leader in the fight for the David Hughes Board, with James Peirce taking the lead at (roughly) the half way mark. Pursuant to Section 9 of the FIDE tournament rules I have withdrawn Ashton Fitzallen from the tournament, which means we'll be back to having a bye each week. Here are the current standings and last night's results - though Zen (who lost his game against Ashton earlier) won't have that result recorded against him for the final standings, meaning he'll be a point higher than these indicate.

Thanks Felix / thanks James. I've copied the scores and will pass them through for our next update on the TCA site. It will probably be shortly after next week's games though.James: with respect to your note after Black's 16th., isn't Qa5 even stronger than b5?

felixellis
28-05-2015, 04:02 AM
Mm I know it's cheating but my engine analysis puts b5 and qa5 roughly the same as be6, and even after nh5 black is still slightly winning. In fact it isn't until black plays bxa4? (instead of qd8) that white has a small advantage and bh6?? that white has a winning advantage.

felixellis
28-05-2015, 04:10 AM
And with that I tell a lie, because of course the knight is still trapped if takes of a4 by ...rb8 and ...b5, so funnily enough it isn't until black plays qd8 in the game (instead of rb8) that white is winning.

Zen beat Ben; Lenard beat Matthew; Denis beat Patrick; David beat James; and Dylan beat Vinod. David went into an endgame with an extra pawn and bishop v. knight - and made it count. I got on the right side of a miniature in my game with Patrick (see below). David now officially shares the lead in the fight for the Board named for him (with James) on 6; I'm still sitting on 100%, but I still have to play all the leaders - exciting stuff, in other words. We at HICC have similar issues getting round-robins finished without making the conditions so strict that almost everyone forfeits games. Some people are reliable attenders and some are not; sooner or later there is a queue of players all waiting for the same opponent.

What an exciting 2015 Handicap Tournament! Quite a few upsets, and a 3 way tie for 1st. that wasn't determined till Lenard beat Scott Woodhill (visiting from W.A.) on time in the last round to deny Scott an outright win. Felix began well with a relatively easy victory over Denis, but struggled later on. Lenard had an outstanding tournament and James played consistently to deservedly share First.
In other news: Vinod has graciously forfeited his remaining games in the club championship, which means only 4 games are still unplayed - but the result is still very much in doubt. Here is the crosstable for the 2015 Handicap and an updated crosstable for the David Hughes Board ...

A few players were scared off this evening - either by school holidays or (more likely) Fischer Random. The standings below are based on James having won his last round game against David - but I need confirmation as both players beat a fast retreat as soon as it was over, leaving without recording the score. Please advise me of the result via this thread ASAP. No Club Champ. catch-ups this Wednesday; next Monday will most likely be the Bronstein Allegro. It was good to welcome Alec Snowdon for the first time!

Reflecting on the madness of chess960 last night - i never felt confident and always felt like a complete novice, but the final standings were very similar to our orthodox tournaments, so presumably everyone else felt the same way. Any thoughts from any other participants - or anyone else, for that matter? It was interesting being able to castle on move 1 in some positions, for example. It also seemed more critical to keep an eye on weak squares from very early on; and it didn't seem clear how staking a claim in the centre was more important than dealing with tactical stuff - and there seemed like there was always more tactical stuff...

Hi James - by negotiation, i'd say.David is away this week, but back next week; Zen and Lenard should be there; not sure about the others (school holidays). If it's as per calendar, then the Bronstein Allegro is most likely!? If there were only, say, 5 players - and 4 of 'em were Felix, me,Zen and Lenard - then there'd be a case for a club champ.catch-up, but that probably won't happen either.

With David away and Felix's 2 brothers visiting, we played a Winter Interlude Bronstein Lightning this evening - and I've never been so ashamed to win a tournament (but not quite ashamed enough to give back the points).
I was lost for all money against Felix (who then moved out of check by staying in check and lost to the illegal move swindle) - and then to his brother, Lindsay (visiting from Norway) - until Lindsay started playing in my extreme time pressure and let me take a rook for nothing.
James and Felix tied for 2nd. after Felix beat James in the last round, with Lenard and Lindsay sharing 4th.

This tournament won't count towards the Player of the Year, but i will submit it for rating.

In other news: it will definitely be the start of the Bronstein Allegro next week; and there won't be any club champ. catch-ups this Wednesday on account of Lenard's birthday! Happy Birthday, Lenard. As the crosstable shows, I already gave you my present!

Unfortunately, i had a call from Ann and Ben to say they won't be able to continue with the tournament. Since it's a round-robin, i suggest the easiest thing is to re-do the draw from scratch and cancel the results of the games they played ..... the alternative (forfeiting their remaining games) is messy. Any objections? No? Good!

In the event it wasn't possible to finish the tournament this week, since we had 2 new players, 2 old players who weren't there last week, 2 players who were there last week but weren't this evening, and 2 withdrawals (as already advised). Another difficult night for a DOP, but an excellent night's chess. David and i played a tense and even game till David blundered a piece and i returned the favour a move or so later! In the event, I found a queen move which kept up the pressure and David couldn't hold the position (with time trouble knocking loudly). I can't see the point of posting a crosstable and draw here yet as the draw seems to be a bit of a moving feast. Players who are absent without leave are usually forfeited, but we'll try to accommodate them if they are there next week?!

That 'snow excuse, Patrick!

We struggled for a couple of rounds of the allegro last night with more new players and others not showing up. The good news is that 18 players have now participated in the allegro; the bad news is that we've never had more than 11 in a night, with some advised withdrawals;some explained absences; some AWOL; some coming and going and then coming again, etc. Last night 4 players needed to leave at 8, which meant only 2 rounds got played.
The upshot is that we simply won't be able to rate this tournament (unless we keep playing it till Christmas). I'm not sure what to do with it really. We also have 4 games outstanding from the club championship and it would be helpful to have a catch-up night (maybe next Monday), to allow Zen/Denis and Felix/Lenard - not sure of the correct colours -with others playing as many of their allegro games as they can and then we'll take it from there. We would need to also find some time for Zen,Lenard and myself to play unfinished allegro times. Alternatively, we could abandon the allegro and allocate places according to wins and win %s!?
For the record: Denis currently leads the allegro on 7/7, with Ashton 2nd. on 6/7 (despite his absence last night), and David Hughes (5/8) and Patrick Grace (5/6)
We played a quick lightning tournament in the last hour last night, with James and Felix sharing the honours on 4/5, from Denis and David on 3/5.

Sufficient funds were raised from the Devonport Speed Challenge to pay the TCA membership fee for all regular Devonport players. Dave has forwarded funds to the TCA and the TCA will register everyone as club based members of the TCA and continue to pay the costs of rating all club games. Membership fees and fund-raising tournaments are the only ways the TCA can raise funds at the moment. If you know any potential sponsors, please let me know!

A productive evening! We managed to play quite a few Club Championship and Winter Allegro catch-up games (crosstables below). Lenard played like a veteran to hold Felix to a draw in their club champ. game; Zen missed Queen x Rook for nothing in his game with Denis. It was good to see Matthew returning after a break, but a pity that Ashton couldn't make it. I'm hoping we can start a new tournament next week - the Bronstein Rapid. If we play it as a 6 round Swiss with (say) 20 minutes and 10 second increments we should be able to play 3 games a night for the next 2 weeks. There are only 2 games to play for the David Hughes Board, and we'll try to play them off site. Not sure how we'll finish the allegro games, but we'll do our best.

There is one game remaining in the Club Champ., (Felix v.Denis) but this will be played off site and hopefully in time for the September ratings.
There are 13 unplayed Winter Allegro games - but this reduces to 7 or 8 games for those who have played the whole tournament. This tournament cannot be rated. I believe you and Ashton have the most unplayed games (4). Dylan has only 1; most have 2 or 3.
It is thus still wise, in my view, to begin the Winter Rapid this evening as a 6 round swiss, (over either 2 or 3 weeks), with unplayed allegro games played afterwards on an ad hoc basis - otherwise too many players will be standing about twiddling their thumbs.
It is not ideal when players are either once only shows or enter tournaments and are then away - this is a perennial problem!
At least in a swiss, it's easier to forfeit non-attendees and to add or withdraw players as necessary.

Hi Guys and Gals,

Just a reminder that the HICC is hosting some weekenders over the coming months, the August Masters (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?16044-HICC-August-Masters-Classical-Weekender) is on at the end of this month, details can be found on the TCA website here (http://www.tasmanianchessassociation.org/hobart-international-chess-club-events/august-masters), or ChessChat here (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?16044-HICC-August-Masters-Classical-Weekender).

Entry is online at the TCA website, people intending to enter on the day should notify me so I can make sure we have enough equipment.

I know it's a gruelling schedule for people who need to travel, but there are 1/2 byes available for rounds 1-5.

The September Variants (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?16045-HICC-September-Chess-Variants-Weekender) is being held at the end of September and is a single afternoon of fun. This is a fund raiser for the HIJCC and again details can be found on the TCA website here (http://www.tasmanianchessassociation.org/hobart-international-chess-club-events/september-variants), or on ChessChat here (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?16045-HICC-September-Chess-Variants-Weekender). The tournament includes a chess 960 rapid, and a bullet Horde chess competition.

Entry is online at the TCA website and if anyone is planning to enter on the day this is absolutely essential that you let me know so I can make sure Iv'e got enough equipment! It takes 11 sets per 8 people for the Horde chess competition! But it's a lot of fun!

See you there.

David Hughes presented me with the Board named in his honour as the winner of our inaugural club championship. I made a short and honest speech about what a terrible player i am, and then illustrated my point excellently with a quick loss to Lenard.

Correct - that has been my planning anyway. David Hughes will be late for his R5 game though, so it'll be touch and go. I'm supposed to be playing Felix some time today so that we can also rate the club championship in the September list.

Congratulations David and James - 1st.= in the Bronstein Rapid, 1.5 points clear of Lenard and Denis, who shared 3rd. But where is Felix? Let us know you're o.k.!
We're slowly ticking off the games in the Winter Allegro.
Next week we begin the Fixed Open: i'll keep you posted about the format in a day or so, but it would be good if everyone got to pick an opening - and preferably a gambit!

There is definitely something going about - i've just heard from Zen that he is also unwell and confined to quarters - and that Lenard will also be away. Thanks for letting us know, Patrick. Take it easy and we'll see you next week. I'm inclined to think that it may be a good night for a Lightning! - since it's over in a night and gives us time to formalise arrangements for the Fixed Opening.... and gives the sick time to recover ... but we'll see what happens.

A small field of 6 for the Spring Lightning - mainly on account of illness. Denis extended his lead in the Player of the Year ladder with a 1st., despite a loss to James. David managed 2 good wins against James, but managed to drop knights for nothing in each of his games with Denis - with the position roughly equal in each of them at the time. Here's the crosstable:

We also determined the openings and the format for the Fixed Opening, which will be run as a 6 round Swiss Allegro (15 minutes per player), played over 2 weeks, with a different opening each round. The Openings for 2015 will be:

The Peirce Gambit; The Muzio variation in the King's Gambit; the Alapin Sicilian; the English Defense to the English Opening; the Berlin Defense in the Ruy Lopez; and the Albin Counter-Gambit.

I'll post the moves for these in a day or so - to encourage some prep. - and we'll determine which opening gets played when by drawing lots before play next week.

Hopefully Zen, Patrick, Lenard et al will be rested and well and ready to go next week!

Frenetic, wild and just plain odd - pretty much par for the course considering the Openings in this year's Fixed. Denis lost a piece for nothing in his game with James - and James nursed the win home in style. Denis and James ended up sharing 1st. Alec rode home to 4th. on the back of a horse called Forfeit. We missed Dylan and Matthew - hope they're back on deck for the start of the Spring Allegro next week - and that Patrick, Felix et al can make it for that tournament as well.
We played a quick 6 round Fischer Lightning to finish - which ended up in a 3 way tie for 1st.

Also: Devonport will be helping to host the 2017 Australian Masters Games. I had a positive response from the Mayor today when discussing the possibility of including chess in the programme of sports for this major event. Very early days, of course, but - watch this space.

With only 6 players present, we managed to complete the Spring Allegro as a round robin in a single night. James was very unlucky in our first round game, having done all the hard work only to lose on time. Patrick held David to a draw; David continued his good run against James; and Denis defeated David in a last round game that determined the final placings. Here's the Crosstable:

Next week, and probably for another 2 weeks after that, we'll be playing the Spring Rapid (25 minutes per player, with no increments). As Patrick wryly observed, by Devonport standards that's a very slow rate of play ....
