Looks like MCC's IM Ari Dale is in good form in Holland. He is currently leading the top amateur section (and his win against Wiersma in a crazy King's Indian was absolutely wild):

Finley Dale is equal first in section 4H, while Arianne Caoilli is +1 in section 1B.

Good work Aussies :D

If the last moves are correct it looks like both players were in severe time trouble as I don't see how else to explain the double blunder on 39 [edit: bzzzt, see below]. Whatever, black threw away a draw.

Ari continues to lead the top amateur section with 4.5/6 and is playing Arthur Pijpers next, who is having a bit of a shocker on 1.5 out of 6.

5.5/8 now, half a point ahead of Werf and Firat. Ari has black vs Hopman (3/8) in the last round, while Werf and Firat face each other. I think Ari has a tiebreak advantage, so a draw should win the event.

And Ari wins to take clear first with a score of 6.5/9. What an absolutely remarkable performance given that he was outrated by more than 100 points by every other player. Performance rating well over 2500. I'm not sure how Ari managed to be selected in the top group, but he has justified that selection in spades!

That's an awesome performance. He doesn't need IM norms having already obtained the title but for what it's worth, he overkilled the IM norm requirement by a point.

Anyone know how many rating points he gains? Looks like about 55 by my reckoning.

I'm not sure how Ari managed to be selected in the top group

On this, I assume he must have been invited on the strength of his similarly superb 8/9 in the 2A section last year (guessing that direct qualification would have only been to 1A or 1B). The Dutch air clearly agrees with Ari!

Dale qualified for the Toptien event by winning the 1A tournament in Wijk aan Zee last year. Assuming the budget cuts for the Wijk aan Zee tournament are not permanent he will be invited to the Grandmaster C tournament next year. (At the closing ceremony, where he was brought on stage with all other winners including Aronian, Karjakin and Giri, Dale was officially invited and he accepted.)

It was definitely 2A Ari won (one of seven level 2 events): http://ratings.fide.com/tournament_report.phtml?event16=74808
1A was won by Merijn Van Delft: http://ratings.fide.com/tournament_report.phtml?event16=74806

Apologies, you are right - all the numbering was changed this year. The 1A tournament this year was equivalent to 2A last year and 1A/B (promotion tournament) called TopTien this year.
