I just read that Vugar Gashimov passed away at the age of 27. I actually played him on Playchess about three years ago and remember some wonderful, very creative games. Were it not for his games I may not have been inspired to play the Modern Benoni so successfully in the last round of the Malaysian Open.

Terrible shame. Died from a brain tumour apparently - had one removed a few years ago, had also suffered from epilepsy and high blood pressure.

First came across him when he tied for first in a FIDE GP in 2008 (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?8057-FIDE-Grand-Prix-in-Baku&p=193095&highlight=gashimov#post193095) and played some stylish games (a few on that thread) and thought we had a new great in the making. Unfortunately left out of the Azerbaijan Olympiad team in 2010 (apparently because of conflict with Azmai) and within a few years not playing any more for health reasons. I'd heard about this vaguely, but not about how serious it was. A sad loss.

And he was a very nice and friendly guy too. R.I.P.
