By the way, has anyone else noticed Smerdon is in action in the Politiken Cup in Denmark? He's near the top on 4.5/5. I'm following his games live on TWIC, he is currently playing live against against Jan Timman.

Smerdon - Timman. An entertaining game. It's possible that playing 19.h4 rather than Ba6+ immediately cost David a strong winning chance. Later he was briefly looking like he might get in some trouble but found an elegant draw at the end.

He's continuing to do really well. On 6/7 so far and coming equal second:

From what I gather he got a late invite after someone pulled out and is just there to enjoy himself and have fun...which is generally when he plays his best chess! Doing well thus far and hopefully he can continue the good form!

Now on 6/8 having lost to the italian GM Sabino Brunello (2593). Some good reports and photos on David's blog: http://www.davidsmerdon.com/
