The following article was published in the 41st year of my chess column in the Sydney Morning Herald on Monday 15th July 2013.

The Commonwealth and South African Open in Port Elizabeth attracted over 800 entries in two 11 round events. IM Andrew Brown (AUS 2291) is in 86th place in the title event with 5.5/10 and Sani Wadi (AUS) is in 314th place with 4.5/10 in the supporting tournament.

Also, Calvin Bennett (AUS) finished on 6.5/11 in the Open Section.

The following article was published in the 41st year of my chess column in the Sydney Morning Herald on Monday 22nd July 2013.

GM Abhijeet Gupta of India, a former world junior champion, won the Commonwealth Championship in Port Elizabeth, South Africa scoring 7 wins and 4 draws from 11 games. IM Andrew Brown (AUS 2291) was placed 65th and Calvin Bennett (AUS 1750) was placed 89th each scoring 6.5/11. Sani Wada (AUS) finished in 267th place with 5.5/11 in the supporting tournament. More than 800 competed in the two events. The President of South Africa Jacob Zuma drew a lengthy rapid game before presenting the prizes. The President in his speech called for chess to be encouraged as a serious sport in schools.
