The following article was published in the 41st year of my chess column in the Sydney Morning Herald on Monday 17th June 2013.

Vietnamese juniors dominated the 426 player Asean age championships in Changmai, Thailand last week. Vietnam won 71 gold, 31 silver and 39 bronze medals with Philippines second with 24 gold, 28 silver and 13 bronze medals. The son of FM Hamed Nouri seven-year-old Alekhine Nouri (PHI) was awarded the FIDE master title in the event.

It looks like he does not have a FIDE rating.

A couple of performances I could see for him he performed around 1300-1400 level.

The second tournament he scored 0/4 against four players rated between 1825 and 2257.

Not sure why he got this title as the site I visited did not mention it, although it did mention he won the u/10 which may be why the title was awarded.

cheers Garrett.

Peter can you confirm Garrett's last statement? TaGarrett's statement is correct.
He is currently unrated.
However the winner of the ASEAN U8 is automatically awarded the FM title, similar to the way the winner of a Zonal gets the IM title.
Expect his title to appear on his rating card once the event is rated and his title application processed by FIDE.

Yes it's an automatic title for an age group win. There's an article about it here:

FM title for ASEAN under 10 is ridiculous. Why?

The young 7-year-old Alekhine did not receive the FM title for winning the Asean Under -10 title.

Alekhine won the Asean under - 8 title ! to receive the FM (FIDE Master) title.

The article says he won the under 8 title not the under 10 title.

EDIT: I typed the above out and then left it sitting there for almost an hour and Peter posted while it sat there.

Alekhine won the Asean under - 8 title ! to receive the FM (FIDE Master) title. That's what I get for assuming Garrett had the correct age division.

I'll correct my previous post.
