The following article was published in the 41st year of my chess column in the Sydney Morning Herald on Monday 20 May 2013.

The European Championship in Legnica, Poland (286 players including 143 GMs, 11 rounds) resulted in a ten-way tie for first place. Alexander Moiseenko (UKR 2698),the winner on tie-break, led all the way. The top 23 qualified for the World Cup all scoring 8 or 7.5 points. The top three seeds D. Jakovenko (RUS 2731), E. Tomashevsky (RUS 2719) and M.Vachier-Lagrave (FRA 2718) failed to qualify .

Sounds like it was quite a close tournament! Peter's last line is a real shock.
