The following article was published in the Sydney Morning Herald Monday 15th April 2013 (in year 41 of the column).

The Russian Team Championship finished on Saturday evening in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. Eighteen teams competed with 88 grandmasters including 26 rated 2700 or higher.

The average rating of the players in the top 4 teams was 2720. St Petersburg led by Svidler 2747 won on countback (each 11/14) from Malakhit (Grischuk 2764 scored 5/6 performance 2980).

The Women’s event was won by Yugra led by World Champion Anna Ushenina.

The twelve players in the World Chess Federation Grand Prix tournament 18 Apr – 1 May in Zug (SUI) are all rated above 2700.

The new premises of the world’s largest chess club has opened in Sharjah, UAE. The main hall can accommodate up to 500 players.
