The NSW Junior League’s activities in the school holidays at North Ryde Community Centre include a coaching clinic on Mon 15 April, a 1 day tournament on Wed 17 April and a 2 day tournament on Wed and Thur of the following week. These events are suitable for players of all strengths including beginners. Junior league tournaments will also be held in Griffith,Orange and Wollongong. The NSW Junior Chess League's Autumn One-Day Tournament has been won jointly by Luke Halpin and Methew Yan, aged 16 and 17 respectively. Nine-year-old Luke Marsh featured in a five-way tie for third place. Leading final scores (166 players, 8 rounds): Luke Halpin, Methew Yan 7; Jack Rodgers, Lalit Prasad, Nicholas Brown, Vincent Jiang and Luke Marsh 6.5.

Sixteen-year-old Thomas (Hanwen) Xuan has won the NSW Junior League’s autumn two-day tournament, half a point ahead of Jack Rodgers who won last year’s winter one-day tournament. Leading scores (138 players, 11 rounds) ;- Thomas Xuan 10, Jack Rodgers 9.5, Nicholas Brown, Vincent Jiang, Luke Halpin, Jackie Wu, Eric Shen, Daniel Siu 8 each.

The NSW Junior League’s activities in the coming school holidays include a one-day tournament on Tuesday 2 July, a two-day tournament on the Wednesday and Thursday and the NSW Junior Championships in the following week. The one-and two-day tournaments are suitable for players of all strengths, including players new to competitive chess. Leading final scores in the NSW Junior League’s winter one-day tournament (129 players, 8 rounds) :- George Bai (age 12) 7.5 ; J.Chen 7; J.Rodgers,N.Brown,K.Christian,K.Quek 6.5. Winter two-day ( 119 players,11 rounds):- Nicholas Brown 9, P.Perera, R.Li 8.5. The NSW Junior championships take place this week at North Ryde – the under 18 division starts today and the under 12 starts on Wednesday. Sixteen-year-old Pengyu Chen has regained the NSW Junior Under 18 title which he previously won in 2009. He withstood a strong challenge from City of Sydney junior champion Pasan Perera. Nine-year-old Michael Pogrebinsky and ten-year-old Kerry Lin tied for first place in the under 12 tournament and will play off for the NSW Under 12 title. Leading final scores Under 18 (23 players,9 rounds) :- Pengyu Chen 8, Pasan Perera 7.5, Rishi Dutta 6.5. Under 12 (30 players,10 rounds) :- Kerry Lin and Michael Pogrebinsky 8, Michael Chellappah 7.5.
