The following was published in the Sydney Morning Herald on 15th October.

The European Club Cup is being held in Eilat, Israel. There are 34 teams with 244 players including 106 grandmasters (31 with ratings 2700 - 2792) from 42 countries. Five of the top eight rated players in Eilat are in the highest rated club team ever – Socar Azerbaijan (Radjabov 2792,Mamedyarov 2748,Topalov 2751,Grischuk 2752,Kamsky 2755 ) .

Ashdod caused a sensational result in the first round defeating Socar Azerbaijan 3.5 – 2.5 ( Ivanchuk 2771 v Radjabov draw, Volokitin 2724 beat Mamedyarov and Eljanov 2681 defeated Topalov on the top boards.

St Petersburg (Bd 1 Svidler 2747),Economist ( Bd 1 Andreikin 2718) and Tomsk (Bd 1 Ponomariov 2735) share the lead with 6/6 after 3 rounds.

Stop press: Most of the 32 teams will each have 5 GM's in UAE in December - A challenge for the Australian team.

The team of Socar Azerbaijan, the top seeds, won the European Club Cup in Eilat, Israel. The leading teams were exceptionally strong with 75 players rated 2600+ including 31 rated 2700+.

Leading final scores (34 teams, 7 rounds, 6 boards):- Socar Azerbaijan – the winners on tie-break (Radjabov 2792,Mamedayarov 2748,Topalov 2751,Grischuk 2752,Kamsky 2755 – best scorer 6/7) and St Petersburg ( Svidler 2747,Dominguez 2734, Vitiugov 2691,Movsesian 2699) each 12 /14, SHSM-64 (Gelfand 2736,Wang Hao 2748,Leko 2734,Giri 2730 ) 11/14. Monte Carlo dominated the Women’s European Club Cup winning all seven matches. The top three boards were Women’s World Champion Y.Hou (CHN 2605),World no 2 H.Koneru (IND 2607, best scorer 5.5/7) and World no 4 A.Muzychuk (SLO 2587).

Re the women, is one to assume that Monte Carlo the city / the Monaco chess federation used its money to pay top women to play for it? As far as I am aware, none of those women live there.

A slightly absurd team, containing the three top women (not counting Judit who doesn't play in women's events).
