Twenty children competed in the Sunday Children’s Chess Tournament on 30 October at the U3A rooms, including three competitors from Gladstone.
There were two divisions. In the first division, Timothy Harris had a grand slam win of eight out eight games. His brother Patrick scored six out of eight games to come second and Matthew Riggs came third with five and a half games out of eight.
In the second division, Kyle Stevens from Gladstone came first, Alex Buckholz came second and Katherine Riggs came third.
There were some upsets on the day. Kyle Stevens from Gladstone defeated Kieran Wallwork, Catherine Riggs defeated Courtney Ryan, and Bryce Rosser defeated Kieran Wallwork.
The next Sunday Children’s Tournament will be held on 27 November, which will also be the last round of the 2011 Grand Prix Tournament, which is presently being won by Timothy Harris.
