Grand Prix: The event will be a Class 1 Grand Prix event

This is a bit premature. I have not received any GP registration for 2012. The 2012 Australian GP is not even yet announced.

But you could enter the Yulgilbar-Think Big Oceania GP. Entry form attached!

Thanks Brian, I asked Grant yesterday if I could start promoting the event and the post above is literally a complete "copy-paste" of the first post of the first post of last year's thread, with updated dates, I wasn't sure what "Grand Prix" referred to, and thought that it was about the MCC Grand Prix :uhoh:. In order to avoid haste I have edited the post,
Jack
Edit: I just noticed that the schedule has been changed in order to accommodate for the the Australian Junior Championships, and I have just changed that as well.

Just a few admin tasks:

1. Can someone please cut and paste the tournament details to the other forum - for some reason I cant seem to log into it and Ive thus given up on trying to do so...

2. I will be starting a list of entries very soon - so sign up early!

3. Ive started an "Event Page" on facebook for this tournament, so please find it and add yourself and send it to your chess playing friends!

4. This is the first event in the 2012 MCC Grand Prix - its a great chance to collect some points!

Hi Prez, if you are planning to attend tomorrow's final day of the Championships and the Reserves please bring along flyers fot this tournament as well as other Club related material such as calendar etc.
It's going to be a great opportunity for promotion for MCC since present and past members seem to have a field day in both competions!

After having a bit of a talk with Patrick after his game, I decided to check to see if he had a FIDE rating ... and he's an Italian FM, rated 2278 http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=811114
Looks like MCC's resident FM Baron might not have things all his own way (although Patrick is taking round 3 off to watch the tennis).

I'm curious about the player ordering in the crosstable. Why isn't it done in order of rating?
I think its in tie-break order, with the tie-break being sum of opponents scores (Baron's first round opponent, Finley Dale, lost his second round game, whereas the others on 2/2 had their first round opponents win in round 2).

OK.

I only asked because I often look at the crosstable to do a quick mental check of the next round pairings, so not having it in rating order threw me.

Is that a setting on the pairing program you're using?

I'm using Swiss Perfect & I think its the default option if you put the players in score order for the Crosstable ...

Hi Kerry,

Yes, that's a default setting. You can change it easily by right clicking on the cross table and selecting "start order" instead of "score order".

Hi Kerry,

Yes, that's a default setting. You can change it easily by right clicking on the cross table and selecting "start order" instead of "score order".That will put them in strict start number order irrespective of their score which wont solve Bollards issue.

He wants them in rating order within score group.

What Kerry needs to do it disable all tie-breaks.

That will put them in strict start number order irrespective of their score which wont solve Bollards issue.

He wants them in rating order within score group.

What Kerry needs to do it disable all tie-breaks.
Ah, through Options->Tournament->Tie-Breaks and removing the "Selected Methods". (Of course these could be added in later in the tournament if needed). Thanks Bill. :)

Round 4 is now underway ... with 2 fans on in the tournament hall ... yes, we might need to go to 3 fans if it gets much hotter!

I think I might suggest to the committee to investigate the cost of air conditioning at MCC, particularly for the weekenders & allegros held during the summer months!

But there hasn't been many events at the club since the Xmas Swiss ... that was essentially the last big event for the year & this is the first big event at the club for this year ...
But as you know, things sometimes run a little slowly at MCC ...

Hi Everyone

The MCC committee is currently looking into the air conditioning / stifling heat issue and hopefully we should have air conditioning fairly soon. I agree - it was very very hot in there today!

In the meantime, I suggest that we get ice vests for the players to wear between rounds...

There is also Elie Beranjia's old solution: he used to get a bucket full of cold water, go out the front of the club and tip it over his head... Ive done it before and it works... My kids tried it today actually and it also worked for them.... Its not very classy, but it keeps people cool...

The other good solution is to put your hat under the cold tap, drench it, squeeze it out and then wear it while its still wet - it cools the head down...

Cheers, Grant

OK, tonight I purchased some plastic bowls & some 'action wipes' ... the plan for tomorrow is to get a bag of ice on the way to MCC ... set up 3 fans in the tournament hall with ice in bowls in front of the fans, so that the fans will be a bit cooler than normal.
I'll also wet the 'action wipes' (very much like 'Chux wipes', but Coles brand) & place them in the freezer for people to use as neck wraps (kind of like in picture below). I actually picked up a fancy one of these at the tennis last week, but 1 isn't going to be enough for all 25 players (and I might just be using it myself!).
http://craftshowexplosion.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/wrap.jpg
If these don't work, then the Beranjia method of water on the head might be an option ... or i could just tell people that if they need the arbiter toc ome & get me from my car, which has air conditioning!

Jack Puccini is the giant killer of round 6, with this nice win over Sylvester Urban:

1. e4 c5 2. Nc3 e6 3. f4 Nc6 4. Nf3 g6 5. Bb5 Nge7 6. e5 d5 7. exd6 Qxd6 8. Ne4
Qxf4 9. d3 Qc7 10. Nf6+ Kd8 11. Bxc6 Nxc6 12. O-O h6 13. d4 cxd4 14. Nxd4 Bc5
15. Be3 Nxd4 16. Bxd4 Ke7 17. Kh1 Bxd4 18. Qxd4 Qd8 19. Qb4+ Qd6 20. Ng8+ Rxg8
21. Rxf7+ Kxf7 22. Qxd6 Kg7 23. Qe7+ Kh8 24. Rf1 Rg7 25. Rf8+ Kh7 26. Qe8 1-0

There are two games left in the round, with Baron just going a pawn up in a rook ending against Scharrer (though the position is still fairly drawish), while Gorka-Chew Lee has been all over the place & at first glance appears fairly balanced at present, but anything is possible.

Frank, do not think so. If a player has a Fide rating - it is to be used for pairing purposes allocating him into a right section.

I definitely echo your sentiments about the juniors ... they seem to be getting harder to play every time you play them ... and quite a few of them are still in Primary school!

As for the prizes, there were three people tied for 2nd on 5/7. They were eligible for the following prizes:
Scharrer (2nd/3rd)
Dale (2nd/3rd/Junior)
Chew Lee (2nd/3rd/Junior/U1800)
In the case of ties, prizes are shared equally (unless a lower division prize is higher on its own, which was not the case here), so with three players, they take 3 prizes to the pool of prizes that are split.
This means that the 2nd & 3rd gets pooled with the U1800 (Max is eligible for this prize) & split evenly between the three players on the same score.
The prizes in question were $150 (2nd), $80 (3rd) & $65 (U1800) for a total of $295 ... so I simply added $5 to the prize pool (to make things easier & save giving coins in the prize) so they each won $100.
The formatting (or lack of) of the forum doesn't really help with displaying the prizes properly!
The other prizes should be fairly straightforward after that explanation ...
Hopefully that explains things ...

Nice report Carl ... and that game of yours against Ari really was a crazy one! I don't think I've ever seen a position like that where there are 5 passed pawns in the middlegame by move 30!
