102 Primary School Children and 47 Secondary School Children competed in the One Day Chess Tournament held at the ATW on 25 October.
It was a great day of chess and competition was keen. 11 Primary Schools and 5 Secondary Schools competed. Some of the children were competing in their first tournament and also used chess clocks for the first time.
In the Primary School Section, St Patricks took out the first place. They were closely followed by their old rivals Norville with St Lukes gaining third place. Top Primary School players in order were Timothy Harris and Andrew Olley who tied for first place, and Patrick Harris and Charles Liebenberg who tied for third place.
In the Secondary School section, Bundaberg High and Fraser Coast Anglican College tied for first place. Shalom College gained third place. Top Secondary School Players in order were Brandon Dahl (FCAC) and Rhys Mortensen who tied for first place, and Jack Stuart, Nisitha Ratnayake and Quinn Holt, who all tied for third place.
There were fifty more entrants this year compared to last year.
Total Prize money paid out was $850 and medallions were presented to the team winners and the top individual winners.
It is planned to hold a similar tournament next October.
Bundaberg Chess Club Secretary Allan Menham said that he expected the tournament to grow in numbers each year. This is due to the increase in Chess Clubs in schools in the area.
The Chess Club would like to thank ATW for making the venue available free of rental.
